Chapter 45

After getting Ethan’s approval, I feel better about having Anna come to the club. However, I am taking it very seriously that she understands what it really means. I know it’s fun, but it’s also very serious and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If she ends up not liking it, she just can’t go and leave a bad review on Yelp. I want her to enjoy it though. I’m crossing my fingers for it.

As the work week begins, Anna spends more time at my desk than anywhere else. She’s texting me and calling my office phone every hour or so. I would be annoyed kind of like I was after a while with Kate, but Anna is actually fun to talk to. She doesn’t hassle me about the club which I haven’t talked to her about yet, but she just calls because she genuinely wants to talk about stuff. Whether it’s about something funny or if it’s asking what I want for lunch, she calls and I’m happy to answer. I feel like she’s going to be a real friend to me. I haven’t had one of those in forever.

Ethan also notices a change in my attitude too. When I’m in his office putting some files away, I text Anna a few times and he points out that I’m smiling a lot. I didn’t notice it, but he says I look happier than usual. He says it’s because I finally have a good female friend talk to. I know he wasn’t super comfortable about me getting close to Kate and know why. She didn’t want to be an actual friend. She just wanted me for her own sexual satisfaction. I was merely a toy to her and I see that now. I haven’t talked to her since before Ethan and I went to the club alone and she hasn’t reached out to me either. I’m pretty much over it though. However, it does suck a little that at one point I thought she liked me. She bought all those clothes and things for me, but I suppose money isn’t an important factor to her as long as she gets what she wants.

While talking to Anna, the day goes by quickly and I blow through at least a hundred or more texts throughout the day. Thank God I don’t have a strict boss who doesn’t allow me to text and work. The only time I knew to put my phone away was during an important meeting with some foreign guys. It makes me think of the first meeting I sat in on while writing in my notebook. I was so embarrassed and yet so turned on just by the way Ethan was looking at me. It makes me feel bad that I haven’t written in so long. It used to be something to help me deal with what I was going through, but since everything has been great, I don’t have a lot of reason to escape to a different place. I like my reality so far and with the club, I’m living out some of the fantasies I wrote about.

Funny how much things have changed since the beginning.

As the week goes on, things just get better and better. By Wednesday, I’m getting excited about the weekend and so is Anna. While I was talking to her on Facetime last night, I finally cracked and told her that she’s coming to the club. I’ve never heard the girl squeal so loudly. She was ecstatic, but I made her calm down so I can talk seriously to her. I went through all the points I’d written down on a notepad so I wouldn’t forget. I talked to her about all the pros and cons that I’ve experienced and what she should expect through and through. She paid attention and even asked questions. I told her that if at any point she feels uncomfortable that we will leave no matter what. I just wanted to reassure her that even while having fun or in a sexual mindset, I will still have her best interest at the forefront of my mind. I want her to enjoy herself just like I do….well except for the Travis incident.

At work, things go smoothly and during lunch, I can’t find anyone to eat with so I walk to the deli cart a block away. While I’m standing in line, playing in my phone, I feel someone come up behind me. I figure it’s another person trying to buy lunch, but when I smell a familiar scent, I turn around and come face to face with a familiar red head.

“Kate.” I inhale and for some reason, her presence makes me nervous.

“Hello, Thea. How are you?” She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes.

“I’m good. How are you? Haven’t seen you around in a while.”

“Oh, I’ve been here and there. Things to do, people to see. How have things been going?”

“They’ve been good. I can’t complain.” I shrug.

Something about her stance in front of me is unnerving. She looks like she’s trying not to show that she’s pissed about something. I haven’t done anything to her so I don’t know why she’s acting like this.

“That’s good. Have you been to the club lately?”

Why does she care?

“Uh, yeah. Ethan and I went over the weekend. I told you we were.”

“Ah yes, it must’ve slipped my mind. Are you going this weekend? I’ll be in attendance.”

I nod.

“Yuup, we’ll be there.”

“Oh? I thought after what happened at the club, you’d be turned off to it.”

I can’t help but frown. How does she know what happened at the club and how does she know it was me it happened to? She must sense what I’m thinking because she quickly speaks.

“Word travels fast. I heard through the grapevine that some poor new girl was attacked. I just know a few girls say they aren’t going back for a while.”

“Yeah, well, not me. It’s not like I was the attacked and I heard they kicked the guy out so everything should be good.” I put on the best smile I can so she doesn’t see my bluff.

Her eyes scan over me, trying to find any trace of some unnerving, but when she doesn’t find it, she just smiles.

“Well, I’ll see you around this weekend. I know you well enough to spot you behind a mask a mile away.”

“I’m sure.” I smirk and all of a sudden, she walks off.

I guess she didn’t want any lunch off the cart.

When I buy my lunch, I damn near sprint back to the office to find Ethan. When I do find him, he’s in a small conference with some guys I recognize from the marketing department. I hide my hot dog behind my back as I knock on the glass door. All the men turn and when Ethan waves me in, I push the door open just enough for me to stick my head in.

“Mr. Sawyer, I know you’re extremely busy and it’s my lunch, but I need to talk to you. It’s really important.” I stress the matter with my expression and he nods.

I close the door and watch as he excuses himself from the meeting. When he comes out, I’m breathing hard for some reason. It’s like the words are so anxious to get out that I’m panicking.

“I hope that wasn’t super important.”

He shakes his head as he takes my arm, pulling me into a private conference room. In the room, I reveal the hot dog and he frowns at it before just brushing it off.

“What’s wrong?”

“I ran into Kate and I think she had something to do with Travis attacking me.”

Ethan’s face hardens immediately.

“Tell me everything.”

I go through the dialogue word for word seeing as I played it over and over in my head the whole way up here. I tell it to him as if I’m a voice recorder and thankfully he doesn’t interrupt. When I’m done, his arms are cross and he looked like he’s contemplating murder.

“I think you’re right. Just in the way she said everything, it seems like she was implying that she knew, but tried to cover it so you wouldn’t catch on. She definitely knows. If she can point you out from behind a mask then she could have easily told Travis where you were and what you were wearing. He knew exactly where you were to attack you. It wasn’t a coincidence. You were being watched the whole time.”

Just hearing Ethan’s theory, sends creepy chills down my spine. I was being stalked at the club. Kate got Travis to attack me, but why? And why did Travis agree to it? What did she offer him or better yet, what does she have over him that she could use to blackmail him into doing her dirty work?

Whoa, all of this just became super scary. What if she’s not done with me yet? She clearly thought me being attacked would scare me out of the club, but it didn’t. I can only wonder what she has up her sleeve. If I know one thing about Kate, it’s that she’s do anything to get what she wants.
