Part IX: Family
Annalise was so startled, she unconsciously jerked his arm.
Apparently alarmed by her gesture, Gale proceeded to apologise: “I’m so sorry, Annalise, I never meant to frighten you like this… I was just thinking aloud, is all! Please forgive me!”
Annalise recovered from her shock quickly and looked up at him with a grin. “Don’t apologise, silly! Now that we’re married, what’s the harm in thinking about starting a family?! In fact, that’s one of the things we must discuss now!”
“You think so?” he asked, hope lighting his eyes, melting her heart.
“Of course!” she reassured him. “Anyway, that’s what my parents told me on the night before our wedding!”
“Yes, mine too,” he told her quietly. He kissed the top of her head. “I suppose the family can wait, for now.”
“Well, not too long, I hope!”
“You really want one!?”
“I certainly do, Gale!”
“All right then. I suppose we can start trying a week or so later, when we go back home from our little vacation.”
“So, any specifics? You know—one boy and one girl…?”
She shook her head. “I leave that entirely up to you!”
Gale raised an eyebrow. “You do?”
Annalise nodded her head. “I most certainly do.”
“All right.” He turned away from her slightly, a thoughtful frown creasing his head. “Okay… How does this sound: two girls – preferably twins – who look like exact copies of you?”
Slight heat crept up her cheeks. “You really want two girls to look just like me? Am I that pretty to look at?”
“Pretty!?” he said, pretending to recoil from her. “Oh no, Anna, I don’t think you’re pretty!” When her face fell, he lifted it up by the chin. “I think, Annalise Maria Watson, that you’re the most beautiful creature to be born – rivalled by none in this entire universe!”
With flushed cheeks, she stated, “I think, Gale Joseph Watson, that you’re the most handsome person in the entire universe – envied by every man, but mine alone to possess!”
“Ah – such poetry!” he exclaimed. “And to such an undeserving man as I!”
“Oh, you’re just as much deserving of me as I am of you!”
“We’ll see about that – after all, we have our whole lives ahead of us to figure out whether we deserve each other or not.”
“Truer words have never been spoken!”
Annalise felt him leave her arm. Instead, he wound both his arms gently around her shoulders. She watched as he leaned his face towards her, slowly. With one hand, he titled her head up towards him and their lips met.
That kiss was the sweetest thing that she had ever experienced in her life till this day—it sparked a kind of light inside her that made her want to forever freeze Father Time at exactly this moment. She did not want it to end – she knew Gale did not want to, either.
