Part VII: Living the Past
A week later, when Michael politely asked her if she would let him and Jonathan sit with her and Robert at Lunchtime, she readily agreed.
By then, she was already head-over-heels in love with him, but was rather successful in hiding it. She did not want him to know about it – not just yet. After everything that she had gone through in her life so far, she wanted to make absolutely sure that he would be there for her every time she needed him. After all, this was something that her biological father had failed to do all those years ago…
“So,” said Jonathan, trying to break the awkward silence at the appointed Lunch hour, “what do you do for fun, Laura?”
When Laura’s shining eyes turned towards Jonathan, Michael felt a pang of jealousy hit his heart like a thorn, teasing and poking. How he wished then that it was him that she had given such a charming look to!
’Then again, it’s probably my own fault,’ he thought. ’I was the one who pushed her away so bad, despite the fact that I knew she was going to be the one to change my life forever…’
As the Lunchtime conversation dwindled from his mind, it was replaced by memories almost forgotten, though acquired just about a year earlier:
He saw her for the first time and knew that she would be what people called now-a-days, his “better half”. She was the Sun to his Moon, the Light to his Darkness…cleansing him of all negativity and filling his essence with the most positive things. He knew that she was The One for him.
But, he was scared to let her in…scared that he would lose all that he had built for himself for three whole years, before she began attending this school with her childhood friend, whom she called ‘Bobby’. He was scared that she would be the one to make him better than he was…
He was scared that she would turn him back into the old Michael – the very person he had abandoned for a life of popularity. The old Michael had been something he never wanted to be now – not ever again…
He spent one entire month in just wondering how he would prevent this so-called ‘hurdle’ from entering his life and damaging it completely. After putting more thought into it than anything ever before, Michael had decided that he would play his usual playboy self with her, break her heart, and make her hate him. That way, she would never have even a remote chance of entering his life again…
But, life was as predictable as the weather: no matter how much he tried to get her to date him, she would always sense that something was up and reject his approaches outright and in public. This made him so furious that he wanted revenge and decided one day that he would publicly humiliate her, just for the fun of it.
With his first trick successful, he thought she would cry and run away, but the way she had looked at him – even with everyone around her laughing at her – he had sensed that she knew he wanted revenge. In fact, she was smiling, for all she was worth – as though it did not matter to her whether she was insulted or not!
“She let me have it…just like that!” he exclaimed to Jonathan later that day, anguish and amazement intertwined in his voice. “The way she looked at me… it was as if she just knew I wanted revenge and…and she let me have it!”
“Yes, I saw, I was there,” Jonathan sighed to him. “But, I suggest you leave her be, from now on. You got your revenge, be happy with that. Don’t push it.”
Of course, Michael being Michael could not help himself and that was when he had begun a series of pranks on Laura Watson…
Now, though, he was resentful. ’I suppose that deeply affected her morale,’ he thought now. ’How I wish I weren’t the cause of it…how I wish I could turn back the Wheel of Time and set things right…’
But, of course, Michael could do no such thing.
