quattro // i look like the poster child of a bad breakup

Two days had gone by and I still hadn’t got a call from Mario or at least his assistant and I was already losing hope. I had tried to keep my mind occupied with other things so that didn’t wallow in self-pity but I was failing miserably.

If Mario had wanted me for callbacks he would have already notified me.

It was already 3’o clock and I was already making my way back to the apartment. It was a very busy day and I was in desperate need of a shower. When I walked through the door I went immediately to the small bathroom. Before stripping off my clothes and getting in the shower I noticed my appearance in the mirror.

I had grayish bags under my eyes making my green eyes dull and my already fair skin looked paler than usual. My long blonde hair was styled, and I use that word lightly, in a messy bun that had already fallen and strands of hair were sticking out in every direction.

Basically, I looked like the poster child of a bad breakup.

The only fact is that I hadn’t broken up with anybody. I haven’t even had a boyfriend in like four years. I just haven’t been sleeping enough because instead, I've been worrying about the fact that I still haven’t received a call from Mario.

And…I’m stressing again.

“Just take a deep breath and go shower.” I said to myself and did just that.

After taking a 45-minute shower with hot water I felt a lot more relaxed. It was already 4 p.m. and I’m guessing Ava is on her way home, so I better get started with dinner.

Cooking is one of my favorite things to do apart from baking and watching TV. With me being a model I’m expected to have a healthy lifestyle and take care of my body and image. Since I’m 5’11” I was already tall enough but I had to maintain a healthy weight to be a model so apart from working out I forced myself to learn how to cook nice healthy meals and I fell I love with it.

To me, cooking is a stress reliever and today I was craving my favorite food; Chow Mein and Sesame Chicken. I started to gather all the ingredients for a recipe that I knew by heart. I put them all on the kitchen countertop and started the food.

I was already halfway through the recipe steps when my phone started ringing. Could this be it? Will I get the job?

I picked up the phone and it was an unknown number and I immediately answered the call. “Hello?” I said expectantly.

“Hi, is this Emma Hart?” the person on the other end of the phone call said.

“Yes, this is her speaking.”

“I’m calling from Mario Simone’s office and I will transfer this call to him. He would like to talk to you personally.” The man, who I’m guessing is Mario’s assistant, said.

“Okay, sure.” I replied and the man said to wait for a little until the call was transferred.

“Hi Emma, how are you doing?” Mario said his British accent even more noticeable on the phone.

“I’m fine and you?” I replied kind of awkwardly. Speaking on the phone is so not my forte.

“I’m good, but let’s skip the small talk and get to the point of this call. I’m sure you want to know if you’ll be coming for the callbacks.” Mario said and I made confirmation sound.

“So, I really liked you. You have a nice walk and you photograph beautifully but, I don’t think you’re what I’m looking for.” Mario explained and I think my heart just stopped.

“But-but, how? You said you liked me and that I did a good job?” I said getting a little angry. Why would he say that? He just said that I’m good but, that I’m not what he’s looking for? What is he even looking for?

“Emma, relax and listen to me.” Had I just said all that out loud? “I’m just looking for an androgynous edge for my new concept and you are very feminine and beautiful. It would be a shame to hide it all. If it were another concept I would hire you without even thinking about it.” Mario said in what sounded like a comforting tone. I guess he would have hired me on another occasion, but I wasn’t looking for another time. I was looking for a good job now!

“But on the bright side, I talked with a friend of mine and recommended you to her. She’s having her casting on Monday at 8 a.m. sharp. Be there. I’m one hundred percent sure that she will give you the spot.” Mario said this time a little happier. I’m not so sure about this but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try. And if Mario is so positive about this i guess I’ll take the chance.

“Okay, I’ll do it. But you have to tell me where it is?” I asked Mario. He had told me all the details except for the place where I had to go.

“Oh, I didn’t tell you? It’s at Georgia Smith’s workplace.” Mario said as if that name didn’t mean anything.

“What? You are not joking, right? Because saying that is a very cruel joke.” I said almost crying and laughing. I’m just going through every emotion right now.

“No, I’m not. Why would I be? You didn’t think that I would recommend you to anybody, right? I told you that I liked you but couldn’t hire you so with this I’m making it up to you. I believe in you.” Oh my God, I’m so happy I could cry. This is such a big opportunity.

“Oh my God, thank you so much Mario.”

“No problem, darling. Remember to do the very best because opportunities like this come only once in a lifetime. Good luck. And I hope to see you later. Bye.” Mario said and I replied with a quick ‘bye’ and ‘thanks’ and hung up the phone.

Oh my God, I can’t believe this. A big designer just recommended me to an even bigger designer. And he’s 100% positive that I’ll get the job.

In all of my conversation with Mario I had walked through the entire apartment and right now I was standing in my room. Suddenly I noticed a really bad smell like as if something was burning.

“Oh crap, the food!” I said and started running towards the kitchen.
