Chapter 15: Kids, Phone Calls, & Best Friends
I was glad when we finally reached the pack house. I needed to think about everything I’ve just been through. Maggie was standing on the porch waiting for us I suppose.
“Leah,” Maggie said in relief before running over to me. “I’m so glad you are okay!” I nuzzled her with my big wolf head. In her hand, she had some clothes for me. “I’ll put them over behind that tree,” She said pointing towards the tree that was a few meters away. I nodded my head before going over there to change.
“Just think of your human self Leah,” Cassie said to me.
“Okay,” I responded to her. I thought of my long dark brown hair and my blue eyes. I thought of my sun-kissed colored skin and before I knew it, bones broke and rearranged themselves and I was me again, well human me anyways.
I rushed to put the clothes on, which consisted of a black long sleeved shirt a pair of skinny jeans and my converse. I didn’t bother to smooth out my hair, I was way too tired and lazy to do that. I came out from behind the tree and headed inside the house. I quickly glanced at the clock and noticed it was about 2:30.
I was about to walk towards the living room when I felt a tug on my leg. I looked down to find Eden with a little boy I didn’t know.
“Yes?” I asked and crouched down so that we were eye to eye.
Eden spoke up. “Leah, you’re back!” She giggled and gave me a hug, which I returned.
“Yep, still in one piece, I think,” I told her which caused her to laugh more.
“I know that you’re tired and all, but I was thinking that if you could come play with me and the other school kids?” Eden asked giving me her puppy dog eyes.
I don’t think anyone could have resisted those eyes, not even Kaden. “Sure, also who is your friend?” I asked nodding towards the boy beside her.
“This is Alex!” She said giving him a sideways hug. “He is my best friend!”
I laughed at how excited she was. “That’s good that you have a best friend,” I said and stood up.
“Do you have a best friend?” She asked me.
“Yes I do, her name is Marisa,” I explained to her. “Now, let’s stop the talking and go play!” I picked her up and swung her around in my arms which caused her to laugh.
I set her back down and she and Alex took my hand and we left the pack house to go who knows where. We ended up a few houses down from the pack house. It turned out it was a playground. All around there were kids climbing and swinging. When I approached them they all stopped and looked at me.
“Guys!” Eden said running up and jumping up onto a bench so she could look taller. “This is Leah our Luna! She is going to play with us today!”
Soon enough I was being attacked by little kids. “Are you really the Luna?” a little boy around the age of 8 asked me. I hesitated to answer the question.
“Yes?” I said. It more came out as a question. The little boy giggled at my response. Eden took my hand and dragged me over to the swing set.
“Sit down,” She commanded. I didn’t want to upset her so I obeyed. All the other kids gathered around us.
Eden put her hands on her hips. “You,” she said pointing to me. “will do as I say. Around here I’m known as the Alpha in the game we are going to play. It’s called Alpha Says.” So like Simon Says? I thought.
“I will tell you to go and get something and you’re required to get it or face the punishment I choose. Oh, and you’re not allowed to tell anyone what you are up to. Understand?” Eden finally finished.
“Yes, I think so,” I responded to her. I take a peek over her shoulder to see Kaden and some of the others who I don’t know, emerge from the pack house. Eden seemed to catch my gaze and looked over at them as well. A small smirk appears on her innocent face.
Eden takes my hand and drags me over to the edge of the playground, the others not far behind us. “Kaden!” She shouted which caused my body to freeze. What is she up to? Kaden looked over at us. He said something to the other guys before jogging his way over to us. Eden quickly pulled me down beside her so that we were eye level with one another.
“Alpha says, kiss Kaden,” She smirked when she said that.
“What’s wrong?” Kaden asked when he finally approached closer to us. I really looked at him and noticed he wasn’t wearing a shirt. You could definitely see the tone and definition of his muscles.
“H-O-T, HOT!” Cassie said dreamily. I rolled my eyes at her statement.
Eden nudged me in the leg telling me to do what she told me to do. This caused me to turn as red as a tomato. “Alayah, are you alright?” Kaden asked a bit confused.
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine,” I said to him. I glanced down at Eden who gave me a do-it-now look. I let out a sigh before speaking to Eden. “I’m not going to do it, Eden,” I said to her.
“Do what?” Kaden asked us. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked at the both of us. He looked especially at me, as if he could get me to break, but little did he know that I will not break, especially in front of him.
“She can’t tell you what,” Eden told him. Kaden looked at her and smirked.
He knelt down so that they were eye level with one another. “Oh really?” He said. “If she can’t tell me then you will.”
Eden shook her head no. “No, I can’t tell you either. She has to do it or face the punishment.” Eden exclaimed.
“Please don’t make me do it.” I implored. “I don’t want to do it, not right now at least.” The last part was meant to be inside my head but it slipped out. I quickly covered my hand with my mouth.
Both Eden and Kaden looked up at me. Eden’s eyes grew wider and Kaden looked confused and wanting to know what we were talking about.
“Do what?” Kaden asked once more, directly looking at me for the answer. I opened my mouth to respond when I felt my phone buzz in my pocket.
I had totally forgotten that Maggie had given me my phone when I changed. I pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the number. It was Marisa.
I hit the answer button and put the phone to my ear. “Marisa?” I said. I looked at Kaden and Eden in front of me, waiting for me to end the phone call.
“Leah, what the hell girl? Why haven’t you been at school for the past 2 days, well now 3 days.” She questioned me.
“I’m sorry I haven’t called you Marisa, I’ve been busy. I was gone because I had to attend my aunt’s funeral and the school gave me a few days off as well.” I told her.
She was angry, I could gather that. “But you didn’t call or text me! I wasn’t even invited to the freaking funeral and I’m your best friend!”
I let out a sigh. “Marisa, calm down okay, everything is-” She cut me off with more yelling.
“Alayah! I want the truth. Everything isn’t okay! When you decide to talk you know where I am.” Marisa hung up after that. I slid my phone back into my pocket.
“Leah, are you okay?” Eden asked me. I looked down at her.
“I think I just lost my best friend,” I said quietly. “This stupid life is ruining my old life and I can’t keep, keeping secrets from the people I care about.”
Eden walks over to me and hugs me, which I return. “That’s okay Leah, everyone has their fights with the people they love. Plus you gained a new best friend!” She said with excitement, which caused me to laugh.
“Who is my new best friend?” I asked her smiling.
“Me duh! Who else would it be? Kaden can’t be your best friend because you l-” I covered her mouth with my hand to stop her from finishing that sentence.
Kaden looked at me and Eden. “I can’t be her best friend because she what?” Kaden asked Eden with a smirk.
“Nothing!” I said before picking Eden up and running across the field and into the pack house. I ran up to my room and sat her down on my bed.
“No, I don’t,” I said to her clear as day. She let out a small giggle.
“Yes, you do! I can see it when you look at him, Leah. You love him!” Eden said crossing her little arms.
“I don’t love him!”
