Chapter 24: Changing Rules & Pools
It was now the second day at the Alpha Conference. Kaden had stayed with me last night, even though it wasn’t allowed. I had woken up to someone banging on the door. “Guys hurry up! Room inspection in 10 minutes!” Dean’s voice seeped through the door.
My eyes flew open and I quickly jumped out of the warmth of the sheets, but I couldn’t Kaden had his arms around me protectively.
I whacked him on the head. “Kaden, get your furry little ass out of my room. Room inspection is in 10 minutes.” I said to him.
“Oh yeah, I forgot they had those.” He muttered. I rolled my eyes.
“Come on, get up,” I said pushing him. He let out a sigh before unwrapping himself from me. I got up and went over to the door to open it. Dean and Maggie came into the room.
“Are you okay after yesterday?” Maggie asked me.
I nodded my head. “Yes, I’m fine now, I guess,” I said to her.
“Well, you guys can talk in a minute, Kaden and I need to leave now.” Dean cut in.
“Right, right,” I said pushing Kaden out the door. Kaden turned and looked at me sadly. I laughed. “You’ll see me later Kaden, don’t worry,” I said to him.
I leaned up and gave him a peck on the lips and then quickly shoved Dean out there door so that it only left me and Maggie.
I turned and looked at Maggie, who was smirking at me. “What?” I said to her.
I knew what she was thinking. “Admit it!” She said.
“Admit what?” I said playing dumb.
“Admit that you are falling in love with him.”
I crossed my arms. “I’m not falling in love with him,” I said to her. I wasn’t, was I?
She looked at me as if I had three heads. “Right, okay. So people who aren’t in love don’t sleep in the same bed as one another and kiss one another like you did yesterday. Okay, I stand corrected, you are totally not in love with him.”
I didn’t say another word to her. The inspectors had come in and made sure it was just us in the room and that no guys were hiding anywhere.
I was glad when they finally left. I quickly hopped into the shower and changed clothes. Once I was out Maggie took my place. The rules discussion started at 10 am. I heard that they could last all day.
It was around 9:30 when there was a knock at the door. I opened the door and saw Kaden and Dean standing there. “Yes?” I asked them.
“We’d thought we could keep you guys company until the meeting begins. Plus we need to tell you how this thing all works out.” Dean explained.
“Oh, okay,” I said and stepped aside to let them in. They sat on Maggie’s bed while I sat on mine. Maggie was still in the shower.
“So?” I said to them, waiting for them to speak.
Kaden cleared his throat and began to speak. “Right, well, first of all, everyone takes their assigned table. Usually, there are 2-4 pack members from a pack. For example, there is 4 of us so at our table, there will be 4 seats.”
I nodded my head for him to continue. “Then Alpha Lean will ask any pack is there a rule they want to change, since you want to change the rules then you’ll raise your hand and he’ll call on you to come up and tell the rest of the pack what you think needs to be changed.” Kaden paused to take a breath before continuing.
“After that, the packs will vote. One vote per pack and your own pack can’t vote. There has to be more yes then no or else the rule will not pass. Once it’s passed that is the law for at least the next year unless someone wants to change it.”
Just as Kaden finished explaining Maggie walked out of the bathroom. “Time to go, people, it starts in 10 minutes.” She said.
We all three stood up and soon all four of us headed downstairs to the dining room once more within 12 hours.
Kaden was right, every group had its own place. We took our seat, which was close to the front.
Alpha Lean tapped the mic to get everyone’s attention. “Good morning everyone, I hope you slept well after the events that took place last night. Hopefully, today will be better.”
I felt eyes on me, but I ignored it the best I could. “Now as you all know, today is the rule conference. I know some of you want rules changed and today is the day you could possibly make that happen.”
He clapped his hands together. “Let’s begin, now who would like to go first.” His eyes gazed the crowd, waiting for someone to raise their hand.
I decided that it was my time to shine. That it was my time to fight back. “I’ll go,” I said raising my hand up. Alpha Lean looked over at me.
“Well don’t just stand there girl, come on up.” He said encouragingly. I did as I was told.
“Now please state what rule or rules you’d like to get changed, Leah.”
I breathed in trying to calm my nerves. I’ve got this. “Hello everyone. I’m pretty sure you all remember me from yesterday, if not then my name is Alayah, but you may call me Leah.” I said introducing myself.
“Today I’d like to change the rules a bit, or rather a lot. As some of you know when I first entered the werewolf community things weren’t peachy at all, in fact, they still aren’t.”
“I’d like to change the rules of how young a girl like me can become a Luna,” I stated. “If you don’t know, I’m 16 and I’m sort of the Luna of the Dark Hollow Pack. I found my mate young. Younger than I should have been. I was told many wolves find their mates in their twenties, well not in this case at all.”
“If a wolf-like myself finds her mate at a young age then I think that it’s her responsibility to take on. Sure it will be a difficult job, but I believe the wolf will learn how to manage it over time. I say that it doesn’t matter what your age is, that you can be a leader if you want too.”
I took a moment and paused before continuing. “I really think this is a good way to go, but if you guys don’t think is it then that’s fine. Everyone’s opinion matters.”
Alpha Lean told everyone who agrees with this statement to raise their hand. Of course, my table couldn’t vote so they stayed silent.
Then he told everyone who doesn’t want this law in place to raise their hand. I could already tell that the no’s was the majority.
“I’m sorry Leah, but as of now, the rules aren’t changing. Any other things you’d like to address?” Alpha Lean asked me.
“It’s okay, and yes there is,” I said. I turned back towards the crowd.
“Everyone has brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc who are around the age of 16. They’ve made mistakes, but I believe that after the age of 16 if the child wants to leave then they can. If that child has found their true mate then let them go with them.”
“I speak from experience. My ‘parents’ thought that I was too young to have a mate. Well look at me, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have one especially an alpha mate.” I said casting a glance at Kaden.
“It’s been an adventure with him and every other pack member that’s part of the pack. Age shouldn’t matter when you find your mate. If you find it young like I did then roll with it. You’ve found someone who would cherish you and love you no matter what others think. Now I understand that some of you want to have your children with you for as long as possible, and I agree with that, but soon enough they are going to want to leave the nest. If they don’t find their mate early then they can stay if they want to, but if they have found their mate by then, then they should be able to leave to be with them.”
I said the next part pretty loudly. “Some kids will resist their parents because their parents are being pushy. Their parents what to protect them from every single thing that’s out there, and that’s not how they learn and experience new things. No, if a child does something and they end up getting hurt, then they learned that lesson of what not to do instead of being told what to do.”
“That’s all I have to say. At the age of 16, I think that the child should have a choice, if they’ve found their mate they can go with them or if they haven’t then they can stay within the pack until they do.” I finished looking at the crowd before me.
Alpha Lean did the same thing he did last time. I couldn’t watch because I was afraid that I’d had failed once more this morning. “Leah?” I heard Alpha Lean’s voice.
I opened my eyes and saw the crowd was standing up and applauding, well everyone but my parents really. I looked at them confused as to why they were clapping.
“Alayah, with the statement you just pulled, I believe that you’ve moved the crowd speechless. Your law has now been passed and is good until someone wishes to change it, next year.” He said making sure the others heard the next year part. That I believe was mainly for my parents because I could tell they wanted to change it as soon as I looked at their faces.
I ran down the steps of the stage and jumped onto Kaden giving him a hug, which he returned. “I did it!” I said happily. Kaden laughed a bit.
“Yes you did,” He whispered in my ear. “Congratulations baby.”
I hugged him even more after that. “Okay, okay, now does anyone else want to have a go at changing some rules?” Alpha Lean asked. I took my seat and watched as people went up and whether people voted for it or not. By the time it was over it was now 5 pm.
“Everyone remember tomorrow is the final day so be ready to pack up and leave tomorrow night at 8 pm. Other than that, have fun!” Alpha Lean said. I laughed at his enthusiasm.
Kaden look my hand into his and twirled me around. “You did it, Leah!” Maggie said pulling me away from Kaden and into a hug. I laughed at her.
“Yeah, I guess so. Sadly I couldn’t get the first one, but one out of two is good enough right.” I said.
“Yes, plus there is always next year,” Maggie said. “Come on, let’s go swimming!” She said to me.
“But it’s like 20 degrees outside,” I said complaining.
“First of all it’s only 42 degrees and second the pool is indoors because it’s always held at the winterish time,” Maggie explained.
I thought about it for a moment. “Fine,” I said to her. She got so happy about that before looking at both the guys. “You guys,” She said pointing to them. “are not allowed to anything stupid! Understand me!” She said to them.
“When have we ever done anything stupid Mags?” Dean said. She gave him a look that made him go pale. “Fine, whatever.” He said holding his hands up in surrender.
Maggie once more in the last two days dragged me upstairs and pushed me into the bathroom. “I’m picking out your bathing suit!” She said through the door.
“But I didn’t bring one!” I shouted back towards her.
“Why do you think I bring extras?” She said in a duh tone. I rolled my eyes. “Now you can’t complain what I bring you and you are going to wear it.”
I sighed. “Fine whatever,” I said to her. She opened the door and handed the bathing suit to me. More like two strips of cloth. “What is this Maggie?” I asked her. No way am I wearing this.
“Duh, it’s your bathing suit, what else would it be?” She said shrugging her shoulders.
“Where is the rest of it?” I said to her. She rolled her eyes.
“Just wear it, Leah. You’ll look hot in it, especially for Kaden.” She said stretching out his last name a bit and a smirk was on her face.
I felt my face heat up when she said that. I looked away too. “Stop blushing and get dressed,” Maggie said and exited the bathroom.
I wanted to throw something at her so bad. “Just wear it, Leah. I agree with Maggie, you’ll look hot in it.” Cassie said.
“But I don’t want to!” I complained.
“Leah just do it!” She said to me.
I put on the bathing suit. It was teal and had white straps on the bottom piece and on the top piece it was just pure white. I wasn’t much of a fan of putting my body out there. Not that I wasn’t confident in myself, I was just never comfortable doing it.
The two-piece didn’t look that bad on me. I threw on a shirt on top of it and shorts. The boys didn’t need to see me, just yet anyway. I laughed at myself before exiting the bathroom.
Maggie was waiting on me, with a bag in her hand, which I assumed held towels. “Ohh, keeping it mysterious I see. Good choice.” She said laughing.
I rolled my eyes. “Let’s go. I bet they are already down there looking for us.” I said. We exited the room and I let Maggie lead the way because I had no clue where I was going.
Finally, we reached the pool. Kaden and Dean had already picked out a spot for us and were looking around to spot us. Dean spotted us first and soon Kaden did too.
“Hello, boys!” Maggie said and set the stuff down on the chairs.
“What took you guys so long?” Dean asked us.
“This one over here,” Maggie said pointing to me. “wouldn’t put on the bikini I gave her. So you can blame her.”
“I told you I didn’t want to wear it.” I pointed out.
“Well, it’s my fault you forgot to pack a bathing suit!” She shouted back at me. I crossed my arms.
“No one even told me there was a pool!” I corrected her. “You know what,” I said to her.
“What?” She responded.
“We are going to have a race,” I said smirking at her.
She looked at me confused. “Why?” She asked.
“To settle this, I bet that I can beat you,” I said pointing to her. “On that,” I said pointing to the diving board. It was about 15 feet up from the pool. The pool was about 10-12 feet deep on that side. Good enough for diving.
“That’ll be easy.” She said. I could tell she was lying. She was scared to do it.
“Uh, babe you haven’t-” Dean began to speak but whatever she said to him within their mind link shut him up.
She walked over to me. “You’re on.”
I laughed and pulled off the shirt and shorts I had put on. “You aren’t going to do that,” Kaden said to me pointing at the diving board.. “wearing that.” He said pointing to the bikini I was wearing, or more like the pieces of cloth Maggie had given me to wear.
I looked at Maggie giving her an icy glare. “Blame her,” I said walking over to the diving board.
Maggie followed after me. “So who goes first?” She asked.
“Since I started this bet I’ll start,” I said to her climbing up onto the board. This would be easy, not to mention I’d be able to do this since I was like 10. I’ve always loved swimming, especially diving.
I looked at the boys who were watching us. A few others had gathered around to watch too. “Be careful. I don’t want to carry you home into pieces now.” Kaden mind linked me. I let out a small laugh.
“You won’t have to,” I said to him confidently.
I closed my eyes and I bent my legs before jumping into the air and soaring down into the water. I did a few flips, ones that seemed impossible but I still did them. Once I hit the water I scrambled to get back up to get out of the cold water.
I looked over a Maggie.
