Chapter 6: Bets & Rock Climbing

I was tapped on the shoulder by someone. I wasn’t sleeping or anything I was just tired of all this craziness happening and needed a break. “Luna,” A voice called quietly. I guess they thought I was asleep.

I opened my light blue eyes to find a women, I had no clue who she was, staring at me. “Yes?” I asked confused as to why she was in front of me and why she had called me Luna. Don’t these people get it? I don’t want to be a Luna nor will I ever!

“You need to come to training Luna. You must keep up your strength if you’re going to help lead us.” The woman said in a quiet voice.

I sighed. “Fine, and don’t call me Luna! It’s Alayah or Leah.” I told her. She nodded her head.

“Well, Leah, I’m Maggie, Dean’s mate. Come on, let’s go before they start to wonder where you are at.” She grabbed my hand and took me upstairs to find me something to wear. I guess what I was wearing wasn’t appropriate enough for them.

Maggie dragged me into a bedroom, I assume it’s hers, and considering I have no clothes here I’m guessing she is giving me some of hers. “Here.” She said giving me a white tee-shirt with a pair of sweatpants. She also gave me a pair of white tennis shoes and some socks.

Maggie then left the room so I could change, which I did fairly quickly. I took a hair tie that I had left of my arm the day I had run, which it’s still been 2 days I think. There was a gentle knock at the door. “Come in,” I said and popped in Maggie.

“You ready to go Leah?” She asked. I looked down at what I was wearing.

“Yeah I guess so,” I answered her. We both walked out of her bedroom, I guess it’s her’s and Dean’s since their married-mates? I don’t know!

Maggie opened the door for me and we soon both were walking down a trail, which Maggie told me it led to the training area.

“This is where you will train.” She said gesturing the open field. It seems so vast and there was someone at every spot. They had a glass building, which was down in what seemed like a hole. You could see everyone inside. Some people were in the boxing ring and others were on treadmills.

She grabbed my arm and took me inside the building. “Wow,” was all that came out of my mouth, apparently me entering the building caused everyone to stop and look at me.

“What?” I said to them and they soon all jumped and started training again. I turned around to ask Maggie a question but she was gone. “Maggie?” I asked confused. Soon enough I found her over near the treadmills with Dean. I approached them, at least I knew them.

“Leah!” Dean said giving me a hug. I gave a hug back.

“So what do I do?” I asked him. If I’m here I might as well train like I was told I’d be doing. Dean clapped his hands together before he started explaining.

“Okay, Leah, since you’re new to the Dark Hollow Pack, you will sit out today and watch. This is so you can get the hang of everything and how we run things here. Usually every 30-45 minutes we rotate stations. So like, Michael over there,” Dean pointed to a guy who was lifting weights. “will in the next 5 minutes switch to the climbing walls over there.” Dean then pointed to the climbing walls. They were huge!

I held my hand up for him to stop talking for a moment. Reality finally caught up to me. “Wait, I’m not training at all! I could have just come here in pajamas if all I was doing was watching!” I said to him.

“Sorry Luna, that’s how the pack training area runs.” Dean apologized. I waved my hand dismissing it.

“It’s not your fault, you’re just telling me the rules. Who can I go and talk to about this?” I asked. Please don’t be Kaden, please!

“You know you want to see him, Leah.” Cassie’s voice echoed into my brain. How can I communicate with her without talking out loud? I thought. ”That’s it!” Cassie spoke once more. “Just speak inside your head like that and I can hear you.”

Oh. I thought. “That would be me, sweetheart.” Kaden’s voice rippled throughout the room. Great! I thought.

I spun on my heels and looked at him. He was only a few feet away, okay only like one feet away. “Great. Let me guess, I can’t train right now, well today, because I don’t know the routine?” I said to him crossing my arms.

“Yes, that’s exactly why you can’t train today. You don’t know how things run and therefore you need to sit back and watch.” Kaden explained.

I inspected my nails as if they were the most interesting thing in the world. “Yeah, Mmmhmm I hear you, but what if I want to train. I bet you I could beat you at anything here.” I looked at him in the eye.

The cold hard stoned face stared back at him, no emotion showing through. “Okay, princess, since you think you can beat me. How about we put a little bet on this? If I win you do as I say for the next 24 hours if I lose you can train with the rest of us today.” He held out his hand for me to shake. I thought about it for a moment. It’d be nice to beat him, to show him up. I took his hand in mine and shook it.

“Deal.”

We both pulled back out hands and placed them at our sides. “Rock climbing. First, to the top, wins.” I narrowed my eyes and smiled.

“What are you waiting for?” I said and rushed over to the rock climbing wall. I looked around for a harness or at least a helmet.

“Leah,” Maggie said from behind me. I turned to look at her. In her hands was a helmet.

“Wait, where are the harnesses?” I asked a little confused. I’ve been rock climbing before and there is always a harness you’re strapped into in case you fall.

I heard a chuckle from behind me and turned to see Kaden. “There is no harnesses sweetheart.” I stood there shocked for a moment and before I asked why Kaden answered like he read my mind. “We don’t have harnesses because it’s supposed to teach us to not let go and keep climbing no matter what.”

I nodded my head. We took our stances. I was on the left and Kaden was on the right. We had to stay on our side, no crossing and no pushing each other off.

“Now that you all know the rules. On the count of three, you’ll start.” Kyle side joining the crowd of people who came to watch us race. “One....two....three go!” Kyle shouted and we began to climb.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been rock climbing, but I still remember what to do. “I wouldn’t look down if I were you, sweetheart, I mean it is a pretty big drop,” Kaden told me. We were side by side, climbing. I laughed at his comment.

“Kaden did you not see me in those woods earlier, I was up in a freaking tree, I think I can handle a little rock climbing.” I snapped back at him.

Kaden was getting ahead of me, but not by much. The crowd below us were shouting my name, hoping I would win. I climbed and climbed and soon enough I got ahead of Kaden, which I think shocked him because he stopped for a moment. “If you can’t keep up, then you might as well stop,” I told him and kept climbing.

“Well princess, if you must know, there is a surprise at the top, have fun with that,” Kaden said from behind. A surprise? I was most confused than ever. Once I reached the top, thank goodness I was first. I jumped up and down on the platform.

“Yes, I beat you!” I said laughing as Kaden got up onto the platform.

“It’s not over yet sweetheart. See you at the bottom.” His voice faded. I turned around to see that he had jumped off.

“Kaden!” I shouted worried. Where did he go? I looked around until I spotted him, on the ground.

“Look up.” He shouted and I did as I was told. There was a zip line. How could I have not noticed that? I grabbed ahold of the hanger thing and jumped. I was soaring through the air for a moment and then I heard a snapping sound.

I opened my closed eyes and noticed the rope was about to break. “Uh oh,” I said, my blue eyes widened in panic. “What do I do?” I starting saying to myself.

Finally, the rope broke, sending me plummeting towards the hardwood floor. I thought I was going to fall and break a bone or worse, but when I felt strong arms wrap around me, catching me before I hit the ground, I knew I was safe.

While I had fallen I had my eyes closed and so when I opened them I found dark brown eyes that I couldn’t look away from. “Are you okay?” Kaden asked neither one of us looked away from one another.

“Y-Yeah.” I stuttered. I never stutter, so why would I start now? Maybe it’s because he caught me and I didn’t know how to respond, yeah that’s it.

He let me go and made sure I was standing and not about to collapse before letting go of me. I was about to think him but before I could get a word out I heard his voice whisper in my ear.

“I win.”
