Chapter 13

California, the sign that there could be trouble brewing…

Jimmy had picked Addison up from school that day on his break from the gas station. Dax had offered to go pick her up for him, but Jimmy could never get enough of seeing his baby girl… especially now that him and all the guys were working their ass off to get this band going.

They’d been working on some deals to make a recording of their first album, and it was much harder than any of them thought it was going to be. Him, Dax, and Jones all worked as mechanics during the week, singing at some bar on the weekend, and Howie and Nickels still had a couple months left of High school. So, between practice, writing, seeing Addison was getting tougher, and tougher. But he made sure that he picked her and Tia up every day after school before he went back to work.

It was a Friday afternoon, and he got back to the gas station. He went into the pit to start on another car when Dax came in and started taking off some tires. “How’s Addie?” Dax asked.

“She’s good, I can’t believe she’s going to be a junior in the next couple months.” He said shaking his head.

“Yeah, well at least you can see her more this summer.” Dax offered.

“I’m hoping so… sometimes I wish we never left Mary’s place just so I could see her every day.” He admitted.

“Yeah, I bet you do!” Dax laughed.

“Damn straight, I could still be sneaking into her bedroom every night!” He laughed as the next car went over the pit for an oil change, and then his cell went off. “Yeah…”

“Hey, I’ve got some good news…” Nickels started.

“You little shit, did you cut class again. You’re not going to have enough credits to graduate come June, you know that, right?” He laughed making Dax shake his head.

“Shut the hell up, I told Mary Beth I’m dropping out. I’ve got more important things going on than a fucking math class and shit, and I could give a shit if I graduate or not.” Nic growled.

“Fine, then what’s up?” Jimmy said with the crescent wrench in his hand

“That guy I bumped into at Chubby’s when I was at work… he gave our CD to a guy named Scotty who liked it. He wants to see what more we can do.” Nickels whispered, there was the sounds of people talking in the background.

“What, when?” He asked glancing out of the pit to where Dax was, and then snapped his fingers to get his attention.

“That’s the thing, he likes the music but wants to know if we can do something not so hard core, and wants the new music in three days.” Nickels explained.

“Three fucking days to change what we are, seriously? Can you see if he’ll give us a week at least?” He groaned.

“What, what the hell is going on?” Dax asked.

“I already tried, it’s three days or nothing, and this could get our foot in the door.” Nickels stated.

“Yeah, I know…” He murmured.

“What the fuck is going on?” Dax growled.

“We might have a deal, but they want us to tone down the music so it’s not so hard core.” He sighed.

“How in the fuck do we do that?! We’re an acid rock band!” Dax snapped.

“Tell Dax if he want's to be more than a grease monkey that plays in an acid rock band at some dive bar, we better come up with a fucking idea.” Nickels growled.

Jimmy was quiet, but he knew there was no way in hell he wanted to be under someone’s car the rest of his life. “Tell the guy he’s got a deal. We will have four songs for him by the end of the week and they will be hard core rock, not acid. Do you think you can sell him on it?” He asked Nickels.

“Yeah, I think I can work my magic.” Nic chuckled and then hung up.

“Cocky little shit.” He smirked putting his cell in his back pocket.

“Well, what did he say?” Dax asked.

“That we’re no longer an acid rock band.” He shrugged going back to work.

“Shit, do you think we can rewrite songs that fast?” Dax asked.

“We don’t need to rewrite them, just tone them down a bit.” He laughed.

“Maybe we should have Addie play with us on the album… that girl can really play man, and it might be good for us to have someone as hot as her in the band.” Dax stated.

“Hell no, Addie is not playing with us!” He growled.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want any mother fucker with a dick to eye fuck my baby girl every time they see her … she’s mine!” He snarled.

“You jealous piece of shit. They already do that.” Dax chuckled.

“Yeah, well a couple guys around town isn’t the whole fucking world.” Jimmy stated.

“Gotcha. So, are we heading to Mary Beth’s place to get Howie after work?” Dax asked.

“I’m thinking we should just go over there and use the garage for the recording. Then we can have Addie and Lynn listen in to see what they think of the changes we've make… those two have a natural ear to what’s good.” He answered.

“Sounds good to me.” Dax said before he stared up with the impact wrench again.

Later that night they all got together over at Mary Beth’s and started working on the songs and the music to go with them. It was a long three hours, and Addison’s ear for music always astounded him.

The guys had tried out the first song and was happy with it, and then him, Jones, Howie, and Nickels started to talk about the cover and their appearance. Then they all agreed on the next song that could fit for the band change, and looked up to find Addison. He glanced over at the sofa where Lynn was blowing huge bubbles with her gum and writing down her homework for her collage course to become a nurse.

“Hey Lynn, where’s Addie?”

“Kitchen, she said she had homework that she needed to finish and then she would be back.” Lynn mumbled. “You know she has to finish all that shit up the night it’s given to her.” She shrugged blowing another bubble.

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” He sighed getting up and going back to the house

He was mumbling to himself about what the next song should sound like. Nickels had been trying to talk the girls into sending out CD’s to record labels when he got a glimpse of Addison sitting at the table in her little tank top, long blond hair going over her should, and a big smile on her face, making him stop in his tracks. She was just so damn beautiful, and he knew he was a jealous fucker when it came to guys checking her out, but what could he say, she was his.

He took another step, and that’s when he saw that Dax was sitting next to her. “What the hell is he doing in there?” He asked, then watched how his best friend acted around his baby girl. “What the fuck?” He growled.

He had noticed that Dax had been acting strange around Addison lately. Opening the doors for her, telling her how nice she looks, he thought he even saw Dax checking out her ass… but he thought he had to been just seeing things, because Dax was more than his best friend, he was like his brother, and Dax had Mindy.

He made his way closer to the sliding glass door, wanting to hear what was going on since the door was open. Dax was laughing at something Addison had said, and then he put his arm around the back of the chair, his hand touching her shoulder. “Chipmunk, I don’t know how you can figure this shit out… I mean anatomy? Really? Why in the hell would you be reading a book like that just for fun.” He asked.

“I don’t know, I just like to read. Besides, I want to be a doctor, might as well get going in it, right?” She laughed.

“If you say so.”

“You know that I’m hoping I can graduate this year so I can get a head start at college. I have a lot of years of studying if I want to become a surgeon.” She said looking up at him with those violet eyes of hers. That’s when the smile on Dax's face fell and another look took its place.

He’d seen that look before, hell, he knew what that fucking look meant, because that’s the look he had whenever he sees his baby girl. Whatever Dax was up to, he was going to put a fucking stop to it… he had already told all the guys that Addison was his, and his alone!

Jimmy opened the screen door wanting to see Addison's reaction. He would know right away what was going on after she saw him and as soon as she turned around, a big beautiful smile coming to her face. “Hey baby, everything okay?” She said easily, happily. Okay, so obliviously Addison had no clue what was going on, but Dax on the other hand. As soon as he saw Jimmy, his arm dropped from around her chair and he started to push himself away.

“Are you done with your homework; I need your help?” He asked, but then his eyes slid to Dax.

She closed the book that was in front of her and got up from the table. “Oh yeah, sorry about that. Dax just came in and we started talking, and I lost track of the time.” She said gathering up her books and then stopped. “And Dax, I think you play the guitar amazingly. You definitely don’t need lessons from me. Honestly, I think you play much better than I do.” She smiled.

She walked over to him and frowned. “Is everything okay?” She asked.

“Yeah baby girl, everything’s fine now.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. I’m just going to have a talk with Dax. Why don’t you go help Jones and I’ll be there in a minute.” He stated his eyes still on Dax, then dropped to hers. “Hey, you still love me?”

“Of course I do baby, I’ll love you forever.” She whispered.

His arm went around her waist and pulled her to him and then kissed her in front of Dax, marking his territory. After she was good and kissed, he let her go. “Me and Dax will be there in a minute.” He grinned. She nodded but glanced back at Dax before she left, and when she was gone, he walked over to his best friend. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Jimmy growled.

“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about?” Dax stated crossing his arms.

“What the fuck do you mean, you don’t know what I’m talking about? We both know the look a guy gives a girl when he’s interested in her, and you were giving that look to Addie… it was written all over your face!” He yelled. “So, let me ask you again… what the fuck do you think you’re doing!?”

Dax hand ran threw his hair not meeting his stare but then stood up. “I didn’t fucking look at her like I wanted her, have you lost your fucking mind? You’re just a jealous asshole who thinks everybody is after your girl.”

“Don’t give me that shit of me being a jealous asshole when I saw what you were doing. You gave her the look like you wanted to jump her fucking bones!” He fumed.

Dax mouth shut up tight, before his hands wrapped around the back of his neck. “Look if I did do what you’re saying, I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just passing through when I saw her at the table, and we started talking, that’s all… I mean shit, Addie is like my little sister!”

Jimmy stood quiet for a minute, then nodded. “Good, that’s good, you just keep seeing her that way. You’ve got Mindy, and she worships the fucking ground you walk on… so leave my girl alone.” He ordered and started to leave, but before he walked out the slider he turned back around. He wanted to make sure Dax knew exactly what he was willing to give up to keep his baby girl. “I love you like a brother, and you know that. But if you ever make a play for Addie… I swear to you on my mother’s grave, I’m going to beat the fucking shit out of you and our friendship would be over!” He growled.

When he was walking back to the garage, he heard Dax swearing and some shit crashing or maybe getting thrown, he wasn’t sure. About ten minutes later Dax walked back into the garage glaring at Jimmy, who gave it right back to him, but nothing was ever said again about that incident in the kitchen, and what he accused Dax of.
