California, the day that changed everything…
Who would have thought that morning when they woke up and headed to L.A, they were just a bunch of foster kids that had started a band years ago and had been trying to make it big. After their last disappointment, of finding someone to pick them up, they all thought it was never going to happen. But as they drove back home to Sherman Oaks, they now had a record deal with one of the biggest labels in the industry. Jimmy sat in the front seat of Dax’s old Camaro with an enormous grin thinking about how the meeting went down, and just how fucking happy he was.
Howie, Jones, and Nickels were laughing in the back seat, talking about what they were going to buy when they made it big. Pretty much all of them agreed on buying themselves a new car, but Jimmy, he really wanted to go down and buy his baby girl a diamond ring. They got into town and Howie started laughing when they pulled into Mary Beth’s driveway. “I say we tease the girls that we didn’t get the deal, and then surprise them!” He laughed.
“Sounds like a plan to me.” Dax shrugged as they screeched to a stop, and then all rolled out of the car.
Nickels lit up a smoke and looked at the two-story house that was way too damn quiet. “Do you think the girls are home?” He asked the guys.
“School gets out at two forty-five, they should be.” Jones offered.
“Maybe their hanging out in the garage doing homework. “Jimmy shrugged and made his way to the back gate.
“Let’s make sure we thank Lynn for the idea of handing out the CD’s at that rock concert… who would have thought that would lead to everything that happened today.” Nickels chuckled.
“You’re pathetic Nic… you’ll say and do anything to get into Lynn’s pants.” Dax laughed.
“Shut the fuck up, you know you do the same thing too!” Nickels growled. But Jimmy and the rest of the guys all laughed as well as they went to the garage door.
“Remember, we didn’t get the deal.” Howie grinned before taking a hold of the door knob and walking in, but what they saw wasn’t what anyone was expecting.
Mary Beth sat on the old raggedy couch with her arm around Tia, while Margie and Mindy were sitting at their feet. Tia’s head popped up showing her red eyes, and they could all see that she had been crying, and that made Howie rush in. “What’s going on?” He asked his aunt, but Tia’s hands went over her face and started crying again.
“It’s nothing, Tia is just a little upset is all.” Mary smiled.
“Upset, upset about what?”
“Well…” She started, but Jimmy realized Addison wasn’t there.
“Where’s Addie? Is she okay?” He asked.
“Yeah, and Lynn?” Nickels chimed in.
“They're just in their bedroom guys, that’s all. But Jimmy, I think you and me should have a little talk before you go see her... we’ve got some wonderful news today.” She said, but then cleared her throat. “But first, why don’t you all tell us how everything went at with the recording company.”
“Well, it was great! We got it aunt Mary; we got the recording deal. We head out to L.A. at the end of the month to start recording our first album.” Howie said as he went over and sat next to Tia.
“That’s great guys, congratulations!” Mary said to them, but her smile dipped.
Dax came up next to Jimmy looking over at all the girls, and then back at Mary. “Holy shit, is the chipmunk sick or something?” He asked with a hitch in his voice.
“What?” Mary asked shocked.
Jimmy’s heart started to beat out of his chest. That kind of thought never occurred to him, he just knew something was going on, but what if it’s worse than that… “What the hell, is Addie alright or what!” He shouted as his hands went to his head looking around the room trying to keep himself calm enough to hear her answer.
“Yes, she’s fine, so calm down.” She said jumping up from the couch. “You just need to take a deep breath, okay and let me tell you what’s going on.”
“Damn it, you scared the shit out of me.” He growled. “So, what happened?”
“Well, Addison got some really good news this afternoon.”
“Yeah, like what?”
“Well, she has enough credits to graduate high school and start college… she’s got a full ride to Yale. Isn’t that great!” Mary smiled.
“You mean to start college next year?” He asked to be sure he was getting this straight.
“No, she’s leaving this weekend… the school year has just started and the dean has accepted her in the dormitory. This is a very big deal.” She explained, but Jimmy was still trying to wrap his head around what he was hearing. “I hope you understand that this is an amazing opportunity for her.” She sighed as he stood there in silence. “Addison is a very gifted young woman. She's so smart Jimmy, and has worked extremely hard to get this.”
“Why didn’t she tell me about this?” He asked.
“I think she didn’t want to upset you when you guys were working so hard to have your dreams of becoming musicians come true.” Mary Beth admitted.
He shook his head not able to look her in the eyes. “I knew she was trying to get into college, I just thought…”
“You just thought that she wasn’t going to because of your relationship with her.” She frowned.
“Yeah, I guess I did. But if this was really something she was doing; she would’ve told me.” He argued.
Tia spoke out from Howie’s arms. “Because she knew if you guys got the record deal that everything was going to change.” She hinted.
He sat there quietly when Jones dropped to a chair running his hand over his face. “Look Jim, we always knew that Addie had big dreams of being a doctor. You two can still be together while we start our career, and she’s at school starting hers. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the two of you are over man.” He shrugged, and then Nickels came over and slapped Jones in the back of the head.
“Dumb ass!” Nickels hissed under his breath.
Jimmy’s didn’t say anything, he couldn’t say anything. The thought of him and Addison breaking up never even occurred to him! “Fuck!” He growled running out of the garage with a whole new set of worries on his mind.
“Jimmy, Jimmy…” Mary Beth called out after him, but he didn’t stop. He needed to talk to his girl and see what the hell was really going on. When he got into the house, he took the stairs two at a time until he reached the girls room. The door was cracked open and he could hear Lynn’s voice. “So, I found out that I can transfer my credits from the college here to one the in Connecticut.”
“Yeah, that’s good. You’re just about finished… are you sure you want to go across country with me. I mean I’ll be living in the dorm the first year for sure.” Addison said.
“Hell yes I do. I can’t wait to get the hell out of California, and having four seasons should be fun… I can’t wait to kick your ass in a snow ball fight.” Lynn winked.
“Yeah I guess…” Addison sighed.
“Come on, Ad. You’ve busted your ass to get this deal. Tia will be just fine with Mary Beth, and Mindy and Margie are still going to be here with her. Besides, as soon as she graduates, we’ll fly her ass out to Connecticut to be with us, see problem solved.” Lynn added.
“Yes, I know that. But still…” She mumbled.
“Damn it Ad, you should be jumping up and down over this.” Lynn growled, but then sighed. “Are you thinking about Jimmy?”
“I love him Lynn.”
“I know you love him, but he’s a big boy. If him and the guys get this recording deal, he’s not going to have time for a girlfriend, you know this right? But if it’s supposed to be forever, then when everything’s said and done, you two will still be together. That’s the best advice I can give you.” Lynn told her.
“It sounds like you’re telling me to break up with him?” She whispered.
“No, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying, be prepared for the inevitable to happen between the two of you is all. You two are going in totally different directions, you know that.” Lynn sighed. “I just want your heart to be ready for what comes next.”
He couldn’t believe what he was hearing bursting into the girl’s room glaring at Lynn. “What the hell Lynn! Why on earth would you say that to her?”
“Jimmy…” Addison said jumping up from the bed. “Hi baby, did you guys get the recording deal?” She asked, but he didn’t say anything not wanting to tell her the truth.
“Yeah, they did.” Lynn answered for him.
“Yeah we did, so what? Why would you tell her to break up with me?!” He growled.
“She didn’t say that…” Addison started to say.
“Oh come on, you know it’s true! You think that you’re going to have time for Ad with all your shit going on out in Hollywood? You think that’s what you were signed for, the label, the schedule, and touring around with you and your girlfriend? Come on, you know it’s true for all of us, not just for you and Addison. Once you guys leave next month we will still need to live our own lives.” She growled back at him.
“Baby girl, you don’t believe this shit, do you?”
“Look Jimmy…” She sighed.
“Holy Shit, you do!” He shouted as his hands grabbed into fist of hair. He needed to fix this, he had to. She was the one thing in his life that he really loved and wanted to take care of. “Why don't you and the girls try doing something with your band. I mean, you guys are great. And I’ve never seen anyone play a guitar like you do baby girl… you guys could be amazing!” He offered.
“But that’s not my dream, that’s yours.” She whispered.
Lynn’s hands balled up in fist as she stomped over to him. “You’re a selfish son of a bitch Jimmy Richardson! Not everyone one wants to be in the spot light, having people knowing their names, and digging up the past that they want to be forgotten about!”
“She has a gift Lynn; you and I both know that… she could be famous!” He roared back.
“But she wants to be a doctor, not a rock star, if you really loved her like you say you do then you would send her off to Yale with your blessing instead of trying to change her fucking dreams!” Lynn roared back.
Addison stood up getting in between her boyfriend and her best friend. “This is ridiculous! You got signed today, we should all be going out celebrate, not standing here fighting with each other.” She said… to Jimmy.
“Damn it Addison! How am I supposed to go and celebrate when my girl has us already breaking up with each other!” He yelled.
“Let’s just come to that bridge when we cross it.” She whispered, not even bothering to look at him, but the damn floor.
He stood there in shock from not only what he had heard, but Addison agreeing with it. “That’s it!” He growled picking her up and throwing her over his shoulder, then headed down the stairs. “Were getting this shit straightened out right now!”
At the bottom of the stairs everyone had gathered and started to make their way up as he was making his way down, when he saw Dax. “Keys!” He growled and then Dax reached into his pocket and threw them to him.
Mary Beth came walking in as he went to the front door looking a bit terrified. “Jimmy, what on earth are you doing?” She asked but he didn’t answer. Instead he walked out the front door going to the Camaro that was parked in the driveway and dropped Addison into the front seat slamming the door shut. Then Mary Beth came running out along with the others to try and stop him. “James Richardson, you need to stop this now!” Mary shouted.
He stopped only for a minute, looking over the roof of the car before he got in. “I can’t Mary, you know that I can’t.” He said, as she frowned, and then started up the car and took off to find a place where him and Addison could talk this shit out.
The drive was quiet until he found an empty parking lot and pulled in as the sun was setting. He hit park, and then turned in the seat, but Addison sighed as she looked out the window. “This isn’t going to solve anything. I’m still leaving for Connecticut on Friday, and you’re going to L.A.”
“I think you and I need to talk about this. I mean, it’s both our lives here, and we said we’d always be together.”
She turned in her seat and slumped against the door. “I guess you’re right. There’s a lot that we need to say to each other.”
“We're not breaking up baby girl.” He told her taking a hold of her knee.
“I never said we were. But what Lynn said, it makes sense… don’t you think.” She whispered.
“How can you even say that?”
She shrugged. “How long will we last if I’m in Connecticut, and you’re here in California? Besides when you guys make it big, you’re going to have tons of girls throwing themselves at you… then what?”
“I could care less about other girls, you know that. I just want to be able to take care of you, and be able to buy you everything we’ve ever wanted.” He explained, but all she did was give him a slight nod. “Hey, do you want to break up me?”
Addison glanced up at him and frowned. “No, I don’t want to break up.”
“Do you still love me?” He asked.
“You know I do.” She signed.
“Good, because I love you so damn much baby girl. You’re the one thing in my life that makes me happy.”
“That still doesn’t solve anything Jimmy. I’m leaving to go to school…” She said with a shake of her head.
“Come here.” He growled getting out of the car and pulling them both into the back seat. Once they both were in back, his arms wrapped around her pulling her in close. “Then I say don’t leave… stay here with me and you and the girls try to make it big with your band. I’m telling you Addie; you have a gift when it comes to playing the guitar.” He said.
“And what about my schooling?” She asked.
“Let me tell you something right now. Death Ever After is going to make, and were going to make it big. And if after a while you and the girls don’t want to be in the music industry, I will pay to put you into any medical school you want… any of them. You just pick it, and I’ll make it happen.” He vowed.
“What you say sound really good, but…”
“But what?” He asked as his heartbeat sped up and a panic started to take over.
“I never thought about making music. I mean, making money and being famous isn’t what I wanted, that’s what you and the guys wanted. I just want to help people, you know, to make my mother proud of me.” She whispered.
“Baby girl, your moms already proud of you, you know that. You are so smart, so beautiful, and I can’t lose you. Music might be my choice of a career, but you baby girl, you’re my life!” He declared fiercely.
A couple tears rolled down her cheek “I love you so much, and you’re my world to but, I’d be missing out on a once of a life opportunity.”
“Then how about this… will you marry me?” He asked.
“You heard me, I want you to be my wife,”
“But I’m only seventeen.” She stated.
“Yeah, and I’m nineteen. We’ll get Mary’s permission for you to go over the state line into Vegas, and then we’ll go through one of those drive thru marriage places… unless you want Elvis to marry us.” He winked. “This way you being with me on the road is all good, and me paying for you to go to college will be a breeze.”
“Married…” She whispered.
“We said we were going to get married, it’s just a little earlier than we thought.” He smiled going in and stealing a kiss. Her arms wrapped around his neck as he laid her down in the back seat. “So, what do you say, Addison Reade will you marry me?” He asked again, kissing her neck.
“I always wanted to be Mrs. James Richardson.” She whispered.
“Is that a yes?” He asked as his hand went under her shirt feeling her soft skin.
“Yes… I trust you, and I love you. I say we go for it.” She smiled.
His mouth crashed down upon hers, needing to know what she was saying was real. His body burned like it had for all the years he had wanted her. But she wanted to wait for the first time together to be special, and her agreeing to follow him and his dream… it couldn't get any better. His hand started to unbutton her pants while he kissed her. “What are you doing?” She panted.
“You just agreed to be my wife. I say let’s make it official.” He answered.
“Were supposed to do that after we get married.” She grinned.
“Don’t worry about it baby girl, we definitely will.” He chuckled, but her hand came up and caressed his face as her eyes looked him over.
“I really do love you Jimmy.” She whispered.
“Damn it, I love you to.” He said as she held on to him and he showed her his whole heart. “From now on baby girl, it’s you and me against the world… always.” He growled, and then made love to her for the very first time.
