I NEED A TUTOR
Jake and Tristan are in the school hallway talking by their lockers joking around like they always do. Jake clasped his hands. “So, how was your date with Savannah last night?” Tristan shrugged his shoulders.
“The same as it was with Lori, Kathy and Shannon. In bed.”
“You’re such a dog dude.” Jake said smiling.
“Woof, woof.” Tristan smiles back. “How’s the math going?” He inquired seriously. Jake smacks his head.
“OMG, it’s hell! I need to find me a tutor like it were yesterday. I can’t fail this class bro.”
“What about Tammy or Theresa?” Tristan offered.
“Nah, I can’t have girls that I banged tutor me. It’s distracting.” Jake rubbed the back of his neck.
“What about the 3 stooges over there?” Jake looks in the direction of Tristan’s thumb. He sees Lisa, Susie and Maggie and laughs.
“Uh-No,” he says dryly. “I banged them too, besides they suck in Math and in bed.”
Tristan smirks at Jake. “Woof, woof.”
Jake chuckled. “You and I are 2 separate breeds dude.”
“Yeah, you’re the bitch.” Tristan laughed.
Jake put his hand on Tristan’s shoulder. “I will always be your bitch.”
Just then Debbie turned the corner and goes to her locker. She’s the school nerd, wears big glasses, dresses in clothes too big for her small frame. She is short and her hair was always covering most of her face. She was quiet. She did have a friend, not bullied from anyone. She was always overlooked. Tristan and Jake looked at each other and both said “BINGO!” Jake walks up to Debbie and although he was standing right next to her, she didn’t acknowledge him until he spoke.
“Hey Debbie, I need a huge favor from you.”
Debbie closed her locker and looked up at him. “What is it?”
“I need you to tutor me in Math. I have to pass that class or I won’t graduate or be able to play football.”
“Hmm, I have to fit you in my schedule. How does Thursday sound? Around 4pm at the park.”
“Yes, and thank you Debs!”
“No problem J.” She walked passed him to her next class. Jake turns to give Tristan the thumbs up, but Tristan was busy making out with a girl he had against the locker.
”I can’t turn my back for a minute. Woof, woof.” Jake shakes his head.
Veronica meets Debbie for lunch at their usual table looking like there was something on her mind that she was dying to say and soon or she will bust like a flat tire.
“OMG! I just found out, maybe a rumor, but may be true, that Linda Lark is pregnant!” She was overly excited about this gossip.
”Don’t believe everything that you hear.” Debbie said without a hint of interest.
”Oh yeah? There’s also a rumor that Jake Stenton approached you this morning.” She started to drink her juice staring at Debbie as she waited for confirmation.
”That “rumor” is true.”
”OMG really?! What did he say or more importantly, what did he want?” She said with a hint of repulse.
”He asked me to tutor him in Math. So I’ll see him this Thursday at the park.”
”Wow, you’re gonna be the envy of all the stupid girls that drool over him.” Veronica’s eyebrows went up.
”Do you mean the ones that he banged already? Then yeah.” Debbie shrugged her shoulders.
“I really don’t like him. I think he’s full of himself. But no one is worse than his bff Tristan. That dude will screw anything with a pulse.” Both girls laughed and continue talking until the bell rings interrupting their day of fun.
THURSDAY AT THE PARK 4PM
“So X=12. You got that?” Debbie slowly did the first three problems for Jake.
”Yeah I do actually. You should be in front of the class teaching and NOT Mr. Brown.”
”It’s the same lesson Mr. Brown gave. If you quit texting on your phone, you wouldn’t need a tutor.” Jake smiled, then laughed.
“Hmm, have you been watching me?” He squinted his eyes at her playfully.
”Dude, you sit right next to me. I’ve never seen a guy text so fast with only 2 fingers!” Jake threw his head back and laughed out loud.
”You’re OK Debbie. I still say you should teach the class.” ”Thanks.” She laughs softly. Jake cleared his throat.
”You have a brother right?”
”Yea, Justin. He’s a junior and knows his Math.”
”Oh you have jokes? Taking cheap shots at my expense?” he laughs again.
”The opportunity was there. I just couldn’t let it slide.” They both laughed.
”Do you have any brothers or sisters?” She asked.
”You could have said siblings.” He teased.
”I wasn’t sure if you knew what that word meant. You know how it is with football players right? Too many hits on the head has been proven to brain damage.” Jake really started laughing.
”You know what Debbie? You are one funny sarcastic girl and thank you for that.” He paused for a second. “I have an older brother. He’s married and has 2 kids.”
”It’s me and my brother. My dad is a fireman and my mom is home.”
”I live with my dad. He’s a cop. My mom remarried and I visit her when I can.” Jake had a hurt look in his eyes, but quickly recovered.
”Oh I’m sorry.” She felt guilty for knowing something so personal about him. Jake laughed and assured her it was ok. Debbie changed the subject to Math again. ”So do you need more tutoring or are you good?” She asked as she packed her bag.
”I need a little more tutoring. At least until the big test. Is that ok with you?”
”It’s ok. But if I can’t make it, I’ll send my friend Veronica on my behalf.” Jake’s eyebrows went up with confusion.
”Really? She gives me the impression that she doesn’t like me much.”
”No your impression is on point. Which is why she will be a good tutor for you cause you can’t get into her pants.” Jake smirked.
”You’re so brutally honest. I like that.”
”Cool so it’s settled. Now I have to go home, call her and convince her to do it.”
”I’ll drive you home.” Jake offered. They both got up to leave when Tristan walked up to them.
”You ready?” He was dressed nicely and damn he smelled good.
”Yeah, hey this is Debbie.” Jake introduced. Tristan looked at Debbie. She looked so small standing next to him.
”Hey Little Bit.” He looked down.
”What’s up Stretch?” Tristan looks at Jake.
”I like her.” Jake smiled with a nod agreeing with Tristan.
”I’m gonna drive Debbie home first. I’ll meet you there ok.” ”Sure no problem. Good night, Little Bit.”
”Good night, Stretch.”
Debbie showers, finishes her homework and calls Veronica. ”Hey Veronica girl.”
”What’s up? How did the tutoring go?”
”Funny that you ask. I need a favor from you.”
”Do you need to ask? You know I will do anything for you.” Debbie smiled then held her breath.
”Oh good cause I told Jake that if I’m unable to tutor him, YOU will do it.” The silence on the phone was deafening as Debbie waited for the outburst.
”YOU DID WHAT?!”
”Now Veronica you just assured me that I don’t need to ask…” ”That’s not fair. You know that I don’t like him.” Veronica pinched the bridge of her nose.
”He knows. I told him already.” Veronica was almost rendered speechless. Almost.
”Y…You told him?” She swallowed in disbelief.
”Well when he brought you up and said that you don’t like him, I confirmed. At least he won’t come on to you, hehehe. Veronica closed her eyes as she took in a deep breath.
”Fine! But only because of you! So what is he like?”
”He’s pretty cool. He wasn’t rude. He actually thinks I’m “ok”. Oh and he introduced me to Tristan.”
”Tristan was there too?”
”No he showed up afterwards. He’s so tall. He called me Little Bit so I called him Stretch.”
”You guys gave each other nicknames? How cute.” She teased. Debbie rolled her eyes.
”Well I gotta go to bed. See ya tomorrow.”
Tristan and Jake were competing on bowling while their dates were in the bathroom touching up their makeup.
”So how did the tutoring go?”
”It went very well. Debbie should be the teacher. I learned more with her in 10 minutes than I did an entire semester.” ”Damn, she’s that good?”
”Yup. She’s funny and cool too.” Jake added as he took a swig of his bottled beer.
”Yes she is. Usually when I give a girl a nickname they bark back with “That’s not my name” (he says it a high pitch voice). I ditched it, she took it and ditched it back.” Tristan said.
”Just don’t start any fires ok. Her dad is a fireman.”
”I can’t help but wonder what she would look like if she dressed up and pull her hair back.” Tristan sat forward wondering.
”Are you crunching on her dude?” Jake smirked in amusement. ”No you jackass. But she has a very nice personality which is rare in these parts.” Tristan deadpanned.
”Well I guess we’ll never know.” Jake changed the subject. “So how did your photo shoot go today?” Tristan sighed.
”It went well, tiring, but well.”
”Dude all you do is pose for the camera.” Jake shook his head. ”And it’s hard work to look this damn good.” Tristan caressed his face.
”I can’t believe you make so much money from being a fuckin model.” Jake shook his head again in disbelief.
”I gotta use what I got while I still have it.”
”I was offered a football scholarship. I want to go pro and marry a supermodel.” Jake wiggled his eyebrows.
”Oh honey, I’m right here already.” Tristan pouted.
Jake laughed ”You will always be my boo.” They both laughed until their dates started heading towards them.
”Oh God. They’re back.” Jake motions towards their dates. Both Tristan and Jake sighed in boredom and say, “yayyy.”
Debbie walked into Justin’s room as he was playing a video game. “Don’t forget to pick me up after school Justin.”
”I won’t Debbie.” He rolled his eyes.
”You said that the last time and I ended up walking to the senior citizen home.”
”Oh come on Deb. That only happened once or twice. Ok three times, but I had a legit excuse.” He said awkwardly.
”Save it little bro. If you can’t take me, call me ok. Can you at least do that?”
”I can but no need. I got you.” Debbie rolled her eyes.
”Uh-huh.” She gave him that “sure” sarcastic look.
At Math class Debbie was turned around talking to Veronica until class begins. Jake walks in searching for Debbie.
”Hey Debbie. I just want to say thanks again for your help.” ”No problem. I’m happy to help.” She smiled at him. Jake looked at Veronica and smiled.
”Jake.” She nods with her arms crossed over her chest looking towards the window. After school Justin is nowhere to be seen. Debbie is waiting when she finally gets a call from Justin that he was unable to pick her up.
”Ugh, that boy!” She clenched her teeth in aggravation. She started walking when Tristan honked his horn and pulled over next to her.
”Hey Little Bit. Do you need a ride home?”
”No, it’s ok thanks.” He came in to a full stop.
”Come on, get in.” Debbie knew that he left no room for arguing and decided to do as he said.
”Ok, but I’m not going home.”
”Where are you going?” He began driving.
”The senior citizens home.”
”Are you visiting your grandparents?” Debbie smiled and slowly shook her head.
”No. I volunteer there. I read to them, talk to them and mostly listen to them. They need that. They need to know that someone still cares about them even if you’re a stranger.”
”Wow, I think that’s awesome.” He looked at her with admiration and smiled. “OK here you are. Do you need me to pick you up afterwards?”
”No it’s ok. My mom gets me, but thanks anyway.”
”Here’s my number just in case.” Debbie logged it in her phone and waved goodbye. He watched her walking away and could not control what came out his mouth “Damn she has a nice ass.” Once he couldn’t see her, he drove away and arrived late for his date.
DEBBIE’S HOUSE SATURDAY
Debbie slept in late until she smells pancakes, bacon and eggs. She quickly gets up, brushes her teeth and heads downstairs. ”Good morning mom.” she kissed her mother’s cheek.
”Good morning sweetheart. Here’s your breakfast. Don’t forget to take your pills after you eat.” Connie reminded.
”I know and I’m tired of taking them. They make me sick.” She shoved a few pieces of bacon in her mouth.
”Lucky for you it’s Saturday.” Connie sighed as she placed a loose strand of her daughter’s hair behind her ear. “Honey I know you hate it, but if….” Debbie cut her off.
”I know, I know. I’ll die sooner without it.” Debbie became overwhelmingly sad suddenly and left the table. She went to her room to her own bathroom. She took out her meds from behind the mirror. “Why was I cursed with lung cancer? I don’t even smoke! Makes no sense and so unfair.” Debbie took her meds then grabbed her guitar and started playing and humming.
