Chapter 1: 1883
The courtroom was stifling, sweat trickled down her back, and her hair felt damp. She was terrified; this couldn’t be happening. Her heart fluttered in her chest at the thought of what this would mean. She stood without realizing she was doing it.
“No,” she said. Her voice came out as a high pitched squeak. She felt William tugging at her hand.
“He didn’t do it. I know he didn’t do it because I was with him last night,” she said a little more strongly. There was a collective gasp from the crowd. She could feel everyone’s eyes on her, but she stood her ground. The judge banged the gavel as the onlookers’ whispers began.
“William, get control of your wife.”
“He did it,” she said pointing. Stillness rained in the courtroom then chaos broke out.
