Ruby's eyes opened slowly as the sun shined on her. She moaned before she sat up and rubbed her face with a hand. looking around the place that was now her home she felt a sense of pity wash over her.
Her 'house' was an old abandoned house. The house was three stories high but it used to be five. Black stains were around it from where a fire had started. Various holes were in the building and the place reeked. Looking around her she saw at least two dozen other people just on her floor alone. Some were still asleep and others were staring off into space. This house was the place where the 'weak' were forced to live.
After the invasion by the Bloodmoon pack, her pack's main rival, anyone who had been injured was deemed weak. It was their Alpha's attempt to make his pack stronger; claiming that by doing so their pack wouldn't be attacked again. So far he had been right and their pack was tied in strongness and size with the Bloodmoon's.
Running her dirty hand through her tangled brown hair she sighed about everything that she had lost.
She used to be a Beta, though that position was usually a male Ruby was the oldest of her two male siblings. After the attack, she lost her parents and her social status in one swoop.
"Woah! Somebody didn't just wake up on the wrong side of the bed, they got attacked by the bed." She heard a man exclaim. Turning her head to the side in the most dramatic way possible she faced the familiar voice.
The person who had said it had a small smirk on his face. He had dirty blonde tangled hair that was naturally resting on top of his head in a messy and yet stylish way. One of his eyes was hazel while the other was a milky white. A claw mark was going down the side of his face. The mark started above his eyebrow, over his eye, and ended on his cheekbone. Another set of claw marks were on his neck and teeth marks were on his arm. She could see the scratch going through his eye and she found herself enticed by it and it somehow added to his face. He had a relatively sharp jawline and was very tall but skinny due to lack of proper nutrition.
"I mean seeing that-" he stopped as he motioned to Ruby. "When I first wake up almost makes me wish that I was blind in my other eye."
"Ha, haha, hahaha, ha. You're so funny, but the joke is on you. I don't sleep in a bed. But hey, me waking up to you telling that exact same joke every day makes me wish that I was dead."
The man, Logan, placed a hand over his heart and a hurt expression crossed his face.
"Wow, that doesn't offend me because I've been told by numerous people that I'm the funniest person they know."
"Let me guess, that person is you and your mom?" Logan blinked several times.
"It still counts." Ruby rolled her eyes.
"You're pathetic," she said as she started to stand up. Placing her left foot on the floor she placed both of her hands on her knee before she stood up. She slowly moved her right leg to place it on the ground. Slightly wincing as she placed pressure on her damaged knee she stood up straight. On her knee, there was a set of teeth marks. Her knee was slightly bent to the right which caused her to have a limp when she walked.
"Yeah, sure, I'm pathetic," Logan said sarcastically.
"I will hurt you," Ruby said slowly.
"Only if you can catch me," Logan said as he gave a toothless smile.
"I swear," Ruby said through gritted teeth.
"Swear what, that I'm the most handsome man you've ever seen?" Ruby let out a laugh from her gut and chest as she held her side. After a few seconds, the laugh turned into an airy laugh. Logan had an unamused expression wash over his face.
"Ok, I take back what I previously said. You are the funniest person I know."
"At least I have that going for me."
"It's the only thing you have going for you."
"That's it. I'm walking away." Logan walked away from Ruby. She limped after him.
"Oh come on. You're such a brat, that was a funny joke."
"Sure it was."
"Logan please slow down, your strides are too big for me." Logan stopped and turned around before he began to walk quickly backward. He watched as she limped after him and an angry expression appear on her face.
"Yeah, you're right you are funny, at least funny to watch."
"I swear on my life." Ruby's teeth clenched together again. Logan suddenly stopped walking and Ruby ran into his chest.
"On account of us being the only teenagers in this place, I call a truce," he said as he held out his hand for her to shake.
"Are you being sincere or are you just scared I'm going to kill you?"
"A little bit of both," he said quickly. Ruby sighed.
"Fine," Ruby said as she shook his hand. A smile came across his face. Turning around he squatted down. She stood on her left foot and hopped onto his back.
"So how come you're not using your wolf to help you walk?"
"I'm preserving her energy."
"You're leaving soon aren't you?" Logan asked. She only nodded her head. "I wish you would stay."
"I wish you would come with me."
"You know very well that I can't leave Clare."
"You're rarely there for her anyway."
"She's my younger sister. I can't just leave her like that. Besides, you and I very well know that I'm restricted from seeing her. Just like you're not allowed to see your brothers."
"I don't want to see my brothers."
"I know but you get my point."
"I understand," Ruby said as she sighed.
By now they had already made it outside. The area that they lived in only had around three other building, each looking as terrible as the last. Their homes were away from the main pack buildings. The surrounding area was cleared of the majority of the trees.
"Will you at least tell me when you're leaving?" Logan asked.
"I promise," Ruby said as she placed her chin on his shoulder. Closing her eyes she dreaded leaving him but knew it was what she had to do in order to truly get away from this pack. She opened her eyes when Logan suddenly stopped. His grip around her slowly loosened as she was placed on the ground.
Logan bowed his head and Ruby stepped to the side to see one of her brothers, Ethan, the Beta and the second oldest standing there. He had dark brown hair and pale blue eyes. He had a sharp jawline and cheekbones. He was the one that resembled Ruby the most. She had dark brown hair as well but had natural caramel highlights from being out in the son so much. Her eyes were a blue as well, but slightly darker. She had a few freckles on her nose and cheeks and her skin was a golden orange. While he was only seventeen, year younger than her, he looked and acted like a twenty-year-old.
"What?!" Ruby asked harshly.
"What I'm not allowed to come and visit you?"
"That's how I would prefer it."
"Ruby, you're lucky that restraints are only placed on you from visiting and not both ways. Isn't that right Logan?"
"Yes, Beta," Logan said with his head still bowed.
"So because you took my place as Beta and now have special privileges I'm supposed to be grateful for that?" Ethan bit the inside of his cheek.
"Scram mutt," Ethan said to Logan. Logan quickly turned around and went back to the house.
"Don't you dare call him that!" Ruby said. Ethan only sighed.
"Just go," Ruby said as she began to limp back to the house.
"Ruby, wait," Ethan said as he grabbed one of her wrists. She quickly turned around and with her free hand went to backhand him. He quickly grabbed her hand with his free hand and pulled her into his chest.
"Don't you dare touch me!" Ruby yelled as she fought against him. Ethan shoved her away from him.
"I just wanted to come and visit you." His voice sounded like part of his heart had shattered.
"Then why didn't you?!" Ruby yelled. "For almost a year no one came to visit me! No one! It was just me and Logan alone after we had been cast out of our homes, deprived of any status we had, and left with permanent reminders why we are left in a building that barely stands, no bed to sleep in, and no family there for you!"
"Ruby, I'm so sorry... Everyone was just..."
"Were just what?"
"Mourning for mom and dad."
"Mourning? That's what you're calling it now? Don't forget that I'm now handicapped because I tried to save their lives while you and Matt were off hiding!" Ethan stayed silent. "Please, just leave me alone. After all these years it shouldn't be hard for you." Ruby turned around and started to walk away.
"What?!" Ruby said as she turned back around. Tears were now in Ethan's eyes.
"I truly am sorry that we... I left you." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a washcloth. He tossed it to her and she caught it with one hand. "It's some food."
"Wow, thanks," Ruby said sarcastically before she turned around and walked away again.
Ethan breathed in deeply before he quickly wiped away a stray tear with the back of his hand. He ran his fingers through his hair and breathed in again.
"Beta?" He heard a voice behind him say. He quickly wiped at his eyes and turned around to find a patrol guard standing there with his head bowed. "The Alpha wants you taking the next patrol shift." Ethan nodded his head before he walked away.
Ruby walked into the house to find Logan standing there in the doorway.
"You know you shouldn't be so hard on him," Logan said.
"I'll share my food if you drop the subject."
"Deal," Logan said before he squatted down. She hopped on his back again and they walked into the woods.
They finally arrived at a fallen down tree that was propped up and resting in a diagonal line. Ruby hopped off Logan's back and climbed on top of the tree. Reaching down his hands he grabbed Ruby's. Ruby jumped as Logan pulled her up and onto the tree. They both walked up the tree until they reached the end of it. It was about fifteen feet off the ground. The tree was big enough for them to sit down beside one another. Their legs were hanging off the tree.
Pulling out the washcloth she untied it to reveal bread and grilled chicken.
"Well, it was nice of him to pack the food in the most cliched thing ever," Logan said. Ruby laughed as she took a bite of chicken. "But still at least he gave us food."
"Good one, bad five-hundred."
"I don't think it's been that much." Ruby looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Who am I to know?" Logan said before he shoved a piece of bread in his mouth. A moment of silence passed between them.
"I'm leaving tonight," Ruby said in a quiet voice. Logan only looked straight ahead.
"I know and I'm going to miss you."
"I'm going to miss you too-" Ruby was cut off as Logan hugged her. She hugged him back. They both closed their eyes and did their best to hold back their tears. When they pulled away from each other Logan puffed out his chest and cleared his throat.
"Sorry, that wasn't a very manly thing of me to do."
"You are not a man."
"I don't know if I can except that," he said as his voice cracked.
"Well, for now, you're going to have to."
"I think I can live with that," he said as he laid down. Ruby laid down as well and they both closed their eyes, just enjoying each others company while it lasted.
"Ruby," Logan said as he lightly shook her. Ruby opened her eyes and sat up. Looking around she saw it was nighttime. "I thought you would like to be woken up."
"Thank you." Logan nodded before he slid off the tree. He easily landed on his feet. Ruby slid off the tree and Logan helped minimize the pressure of landing. "I'm going to miss you."
"I'm going to miss you too." They both hugged before they pulled away. "Go before I start to cry," Logan said as he gave a sad laugh.
"Fine, but I'm only going so you don't see me cry."
"You are an ugly crier." Ruby only smiled.
"Bye," she said as she used some of her wolfs strength to lessen the pain as she jogged away from him.
"Bye," Logan said to himself as he watcher her disappear into the night.
Ruby wiped away a tear from her face as she continued to jog. After a couple of minutes, she heard someone growl which caused her to freeze in her tracks.
"Stop right there!" The voice growled. She turned around and saw Ethan standing there. His angry face turned soft once he saw her. "Ruby?" his voice came out a whisper.
"I'm leaving Ethan, please don't try and stop me."
"Please just let me go."
"I said ok, I'm not going to stop you."
"Why what? Why am I not going to stop a blob that somewhat looks like a person in the dead of night? I think only a crazy person would investigate a blob."
"Thank you, Ethan."
"Oh, so the blob now has manors?"
"I'm about to lose them."
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have insulted the blob."
Ruby engulfed Ethan in a hug. He stood there frozen for a second.
"Is the blob attacking or hugging me?"
"The blob is hugging you." Ethan quickly hugged her back.
"I'm sorry for all those years. I'm sorry for never being there for you, I guess I felt... guilty. I'm sorry for everything and I'm truly going to miss you."
"I'm sorry for being so mean to you and I'm going to miss you too." They pulled away from each other.
"You better go, the blob is starting to look more and more like a midget teenager."
"The blob is starting to make noises." Ruby laughed before she started to jog. She turned around and faced him.
"Bye," she said as she waved and turned back around.
Ethan held up a hand and watched as she crossed the border.
"Bye," he said in a whisper as he watched her fade into the night.
