Chapter 15 - Career Bound
Kate drew in a lung full of air as she stared at him in disbelief. This meant that either way he really did set her up. But why?
She remained quiet, eyeing her grandmother’s doors from down the hall to ensure that it was still shut.
Brandon sighed running his hand through his hair, “You see, something happened a while back. Something that left a very bitter taste in Taylor’s mouth where reporters are concerned.”
“Like what?” She asked, grabbing her cup, tightening her hold on the handle. “I don’t recall hearing anything scandaless abput him. Well, work wise that is,” she blushed,” we all know that his ‘affairs’ are very public.”
Brandon smirked, “That’s because he was able to act out fast and quite drastically. And the woman you saw him with last night, she’s the whole reason behind it.”
She jutted her chin up, “Why are you telling me all this?”
He shrugged, then said, “I don’t know. Maybe it’ll shed some light on the whole Taylor situation and why he reacted the way he did with you.”
“Huh,” she scoffed, “well, he looked as though he was over whatever she had done last night.” Then made her way back to the dinning table.
“If it was only that simple.” He murmured, following suit.
“Carla is a certified bitch.” He stated, his eyes followed her hands as she grabbed her bear claw once more.
“That’s her name?” She asked, recalling that she had heard something along the line of Carly and Clarence when she had walked into Taylor’s office.
He nodded, “Yes.”
“I guess everybody’s a bitch when caught cheating, aren’t they?” She said sarcastically, as she bit down on the pastry.
“She’s only half of the kind your referring to because she didn’t just sleep around, she slept her way into gathering information, any information that could increasing her career chart.”
“So,” she swallowed, “what you’re saying is that she used him for her career?”
A bitter smile appeared on Brandon’s face. “Yeah, she did whatever she needed to do to get the job done. Unfortunately, Taylor had let his guards down around her, they had dated for two years and when he made no attempts on planting roots with her, she turned into blackmail, wanted to extort money out of him.”
She coughed at the bit of deliciousness that nearly choked her. No wonder he was so spiteful towards her.
“That’s pretty fucked up.”
“It’s a whole lot more complicated that it seems but I just wanted to get that out of the way.“He said, resting his back against the chair as though a heavy burden had just been lifted.
“But it’s still doesn’t explain why you lied to me. You sent me into his office fully aware that he would go all psycho-Price?” She reminded him angrily.
“I know, ” he said defensicely, “I only wanted to help you out. Honest. I thought that if I had you in a room together then you’d both talk it out without him being distracted by the crowd.”
She frowned down at the table, trying to assess his words. He sounded sincere and that look he had in his eyes tugged at her heart.
Her eyes the flew to his, “It was embarrassing.” She stated.
“I can image.” He replied offering her a sympathetic smile.
Her nose flared and she dropped the sweet pastry on the table once more.
“Can you? Because I still can’t get your naked brother out of my head. No amount of therapy will ever erase that.”
She wasn’t sure if he was apologising for the Taylor incident or that fact that he was trying to conceal a laugh.
“Well, Brandon.” She stared at him, face serious as well as her voice, ” I’m glad that you feel better now having told me about your family issues. But meanwhile I’m still unemployed and my sick grandmother is in that room over there with no idea that we might be living on the street next week.”
Brandon’s face whitened, his gaze following the track that Mrs.Kirby had taken earlier to her grandmother’s room.
“That’s why I’m here.” He began, looking back at Kate with her thumb drumming against the rim of her mug. “I’m here to offer you a job. Working with me.”
Kate raised a brow at him, “Really?” She asked unimpressed, “Doing what exactly?”
“Well, that we can figure out later on. I’m usually at the office with Taylor half of the day. It’s mostly damage control and contract negotiations.”
“So in other words you clean up after his mess,” she raised a brow at him, “Does that mean that I will be cleaning after yours?”
Brandon laughed, “I can assure you that you will be doing nothing of a sort.”
“I don’t know Brandon. I feel like I should take my chances with your brother. Wait, does he know that you are here?”
He chuckled, “Well if he didn’t then I’m sure that Ben has already alerted him. However, I do not answer to Taylor and I did warn him that if he did intend on having you fired, then I’d snatch you up for myself.”
She wasn’t sure what he had meant by that but she let it slide. She pouted her lips and narrowed her gaze at him. Not matter what angle she looked at him in, she still didn’t get it.
“Seriously though, how are you even related to Taylor? You’re so different and didn’t Ben just call you Mr.Powells?”
Brandon’s hand went to his face then pinched at the bridge of his nose, “You really don’t let anything slip by, do you?”
She raised a brow at him, “I’m a reporter. Eventhough I’ve done a shitty job so far, I do tend to pick up on clues.”
There was a moment of awkward silence as Brandon sat gaze at her with something flickering in his eyes and Kate couldn’t tell what.
Maybe she had asked something too personal, she thought. As she opened her mouth to tell him that it was fine if he didn’t want to talk about it Brandon interrupted her.
“I’m a lovechild.“He stated, trying to hide the hurt that he had in his eyes by a faint smile. He then continued, “After Taylor’s mother died, our dear old dad managed to knock up my mother in what he said was, and I quote “a one night stand”, then he disappeared.
“You mean you’re a bastard?” She said without thinking, groaning at herself inwardly for the lack of control on her tongue.
“Ouch!” Brandon said, throwing his hand dramatically over his heart, pretending to be wounded, “I sugar-coated it for a reason.”
“Sorry,” she winced, covering her face with both her hands,“it slipped. Sometimes I have a hard time managing to keep my thoughts to myself.”
“Yeah, I can see that.”
“So what happens now?” Kate asked, trying to lighten up the mood.
“Now,” Brandon said getting from the chair, stuffing one of his hands in his pocket, ” we go to my office.”
Kate frowned, “But your brother...”
“Will have a fit but he’ll be fine.” Brandon interjected, holding out his free hand to her. “Come on, I need to figure out what to do with you.”
“Excuse me?” She scowled at him, as he came to the other side and grabbed hold of her hand, when she made no attempt in accepting his.
“I need to see what post I have vacant.” He announced, smiling down at her innocently as he tugged at her hand.
Kate got up and walked along behind him, grabbing her discarded bag on the small table by the door.
“Nice save, smartass.”
He chuckled once more as he opened the door, “I thought I’d try one of Taylor’s line. I still can’t believe he said that.”
