Chapter 62 - Asking For A Change
“Love! Hold up.” Taylor yelled, half way down the hallway - in mid-struggles with his T-shirt around his neck.
And when he finally spotted her, she was already making her way down the stairs.
“Shit!” He hissed a curse under his breath, “Hey, mind waiting for me for just a sec?” He asked, hoping that she would stop.
They had already been caught having sex once and wanted to spare her from yet another humiliation. He was certain that this time around she would probably follow through on her previous threats.
Kate stopped, looked up and grinned when he started to walking down the stairs, two at a time.
“You’re going to have to be quicker than that, chef. My stomach is starting to disgust itself.” She giggled when he scolded her with his eyes.
Four more steps and he was infront of her, blocking her path. She playfully made a move to go around him but he wrapped his arms around her waist and held her steady.
“Taylor,” she said, tugging at the covers that had almost slipped free from her hands. “I’m all for foreplay, but I seriously don’t think that I can go another without fainting.”
His hands moved from her waist to her elbows. “There’s something I have to tell you first.”
“Okay,” she smiled, “but can we do it while we walk?”
He shook his head. “Not really, but you might want to get dressed first.”
Her brows creased down at him. “We’ve had sex in almost all the rooms here and in some occasions, I’ve had to walk around naked because of you. And now you want me to get dressed?” She raised a brow at him, trying to figure out whether he was being serious.
But he was serious. When his eyes moved past her and he turned around scanning the empty living room, she followed his gaze and frowned.
He swung around to look at her. “Yeah, I know but maybe you shouldn’t talk about our bedroom activities here. Why don’t we go back upstairs?”
Kate cooked her head. She was now convince that he was acting weird - mysterious even. “Upstairs? Babe, unless you have a secret stash of food up there, I’m not going back to starve.” She laughed. “Now can you please feed me?” She pouted.
Oh God! He thought, he might as well tell her now and be done with it. “Kate, I’m not sure how you’re going to react to what I’m about to tell you, but --”
Kate’s eyes shifted to the arch doorway of the kitchen when she saw a familiar figures move around the counter and her eyes immediately widened in fear.
“Mrs.Kirby?” Kate squealed, springing up the stairs with her fingers holding on for dear life around the satin sheet around her. Her feet did not stop, not until she reached the bedroom.
Once there, she dropped the covers to the floor and with quick fingers, she began to get dressed. Taylor stood by the doorway in silence and watched as she pulled on a pair of white shorts with what looked like a permanent scowl on her face. And when she bent down to collect the discard sheet on the floor, he moved inside and shut the door.
At the sound of the door closing shut, Kate jutted her head up and gave him a disapproving glare. “Why didn’t you tell me that Mrs.Kirby was here?”
He scratched the back of his head and slowly met her gaze. “Want to sit down so that we can talk about it?”
She raised a brow at him, “Talk?”
“Yes, because Mrs.Kirby isn’t the only one who’s here.”
Kate swallowed, dropping down on the soft mattress. “What’s going on Taylor?” She asked, confused by his odd behavior.
“Your grandmother is here,” He announced gruffly. “She’s actually sleeping in what used to be your bedroom.”
“Nana is here?” She instantly rose to her feet.
He looked up and met her quizzical face and exhaled nervously.
“Yes. She’s been here since Wednesday.” He admitted the rose to his feet.
“Wednesday?” She blinked, ” You mean, she’s been here for three whole days while I was sick?” She took a step back trying to make sense of what was happening. First he buys her clothes and then he moves her grandmother here?
“Taylor?” She let out a nervous breath, “Not that I’m not grateful for you taking care of me and buying me clothes, but, you bringing Nana here. What going on?”
“You are moving in with me, permanently.” He said. His tone sounded definite, it left no room for argument.
“Moving...?” Kate laughed. “No, I’m not. I have an apartment already, one that meets my budget. I can’t just moving with you on a whimp. What if this doesn’t work? What happens then? Do you know how hard it was to get that place?”
“No, Taylor. You should have discussed this with me first. This is my life. I have nothing and you have everything. Cant you see that I have more to lose in this than you when things go south.” She told him, wrapping her arms around herself for comfort.
“Nothing’s going to change.” His voice was rough as he reached and pulled her to him. “It’s crazy, not living together because we already are. The only thing that was missing to complete us was your grandmother. I love you, Kate, so fucking much that when you were sick the thought of losing you nearly drove me insane.”
His hands covered hers. Gently, persistently, that it urged her to lift her head and meet his blue eyes.
“I want you with me, Kate, always and I know how much you love your grandmother, so now you’ll get see her all the time.” He said, lifting a hand up and caressed the side of her face.
Kate bristled. “Did it ever occur to you to ask what I might want?”
Taylor drew up his other hand and placed it on the side of her face, holding it in place and his eyes holding her glistening ones.
“All right. I’m asking, love. Do you want to be with me or don’t you?”
It was the tenderness in his voice that caused a tear to roll down her cheek. She knew that she should tell him that she wasn’t about to just give up on her apartment. She should demand her independence and not let him take control of everything, her life or her heart. But on the other hand, she love him and him doing all of this - as frustrating as it was the way that he went about it, showed that he cared - really cared about her.
He bent his head and kissed her. “I’m waiting,” he whispered.
Kate lifted her hands and covered his. “This is crazy, you know? And I know that Nana wouldn’t just agree to come here, so what did you do?”
He smiled. “I promised her loads great grandchildren and that we would name at least two after her.”
“What?” She shrieked, prying off his hands on her cheeks.
Taylor laughed at the horrified looked she gave him. “I’m kidding, love. All I did was tell her how much you missed having her around and being that I am forever wanting to keep you happy, I begged her to come live with us.”
“Forever?” She eyed him warily, taking a step back. “You’re not going to drop down on one knee and propose, are you?”
He lifted his brows at her. “Is that what you want?”
“No!” She blurted out. “It’s just that I wouldn’t be surprised given everything that you’ve done so far.”
“I’m not.” He replied then grinned mischievously. “At least not now.”
Not now? Her insides melted. It was another one of his promises, she could tell. It was the way his eyes light up when he said it. It caught her caught and made her heart want to burst inside her chest.
“Well, atleast I’ll have a say in that,” She said, then added, “but then again, knowing you, you might just slap the damn ring on and announce that we are getting married.”
Taylor laughed. “You’re probably right.”
She threw him a deadly glare, which made him sober up and clear his throat.
“Fine!” He said, lifting his hands up in defeat. “I’ll ask. When the time comes, I’ll shower you with roses petals and grovel on my knees before asking you to marry me. But if you take your sweet time answering, then and only then, do I promise to slap the damn ring on.”
Kate fought a good few seconds trying to keep herself from laughing and after that, she gave up. She already knew he was probably going to do quite the opposite of what he had said. But this arrogant, infuriating yet still, loving and sometimes thoughtful man was hers love and hers to keep. And keep him, she would.
“I love you, you know that right?” She said, curling her arms around Taylor’s neck.
Taylor nodded, his blue eyes on her. “I do.”
“Good. Then no more surprises, at least not for today.”
“Alright,” He conceded, “but I did have something else to tell -- I mean ask you. I want you to come with me to Seychelles next week.”
“Next week? You mean like a vacation?”
“Sort of,” he said, averting her inquisitive eyed. “But mostly because there is something that you need to know and I think I’m ready to tell you about it.”
“What is?” She asked, moving a hand and gently touched his cheek.
Taylor tilted his head forward and allowed their foreheads to touch. He then closed his eyes and said,“I think that it will be better if you see it for yourself.”
Kate could feel the pain in his voice and it tugged at her heart. It told her all that she needed to know. That whatever was there was causing him a great deal of suffering and the fact that he was willing to share this with her, showed that he really did trust her.
“Okay,” she released a short breath “I would love to go with you.”
