Chapter 9

Gabi rolled over in her bed, unsurprised at finding it empty. What did surprise her was the note on her nightstand.

Good morning beautiful,

Somehow we’re out of waffle mix so I ran to HEB. There’s coffee in the kitchen if you want. I think I figured out how to work that blasted coffee machine. I’ll be back soon.

Gabi sighed happily and pulled her covers more tightly around her naked body, thinking back to the previous night’s events.

The night before

“I want you to kiss me,” Gabi repeated, pressing herself closer to Ryan.

“Where?” he asked breathlessly.

“I don’t care, just kiss me you idiot!” She reached up and pulled his head toward hers until their lips met. Months of pent up sexual tension had them pulling at each other’s clothes, right there in the entryway of her apartment.

Ryan pulled away long enough to ask her what else she wanted.

“Pick me up,” she commanded, wrapping her legs around her waist as he obliged. She could feel his arousal rubbing against her in the most delightful way. It had been years since she had been with a guy and she was practically buzzing with excitement and desire.

“My neck,” she said, pulling his head down to suck on her neck. She gasped at the sensation. “Bedroom,” she choked out her next demand as he made his way down her neckline, nuzzling the top of her breasts peeking out of her tank top.

He quickly maneuvered them through her apartment toward her bedroom but stopped at the door. He kissed her forehead. “Are you sure about this Gabriella? I don’t want you to regret it. I don’t want you to regret anything that happens with me. I really like you; I don’t just want a fling.”

Gabi smiled softly, caressing his cheek. “I know. And I’m sure. Open the door.”

Ryan didn’t hesitate to follow that instruction. He lay her gently on the bed and kissed her tenderly. “Tell me what you want sweetheart.”

“Your clothes off,” she replied boldly, sitting up and removing her own clothes.

She watched with rapt attention as he removed his suit clumsily, causing her to giggle. She immediately stopped giggling when he removed his boxers. She licked her lips in anticipation as he made his way back over to her. Suddenly aware of her nakedness, she tried to cover herself but wasn’t able to because he grabbed both of her arms with one hand and pinned them above her head. He resumed his ministrations, causing her to squirm beneath him in pleasure.

“You’re quiet Gabriella,” he observed, as he used his free hand to rub her already hardened nipple. “Tell me what you want baby.”

“I want, I want you to tell me what you want,” she replied breathlessly.

He grinned and kissed her firmly, letting go of her hands. “I want to wrap your legs around my waist and make love to you until you cry out in pleasure. I want to tangle my fingers in your hair and pull it so that you arch backward and I can see all of your glorious body. I want nothing less than all of you Gabriella.”

“Then have me,” she croaked. She reached over into her nightstand and pulled out a condom with a shy smile.

“Gabi? Dónde estás niña?”

Gabi was shaken from her thoughts as she heard her mother entering her bedroom. She swore internally and rolled back over and pretended to be asleep, hoping it would make her mother leave.

“Gabi? Whose clothes are these?”

Gabi opened one eye wide enough to see her mother holding Ryan’s suit jacket and tie.

“I know you are not asleep! Are these belonging to Ryan?”

Gabi groaned and sat up, pulling her blanket with her to cover her chest. “Why are you here Mami? I told you that key was only for emergencies!”

“Answer my question, Gabriella.”

“Yes mami. They’re Ryan’s clothes.”

Isabella stared at her daughter in disbelief for a moment before walking over to her praying over her in Spanish.

Gabi rolled her eyes. “You’re being dramatic mami! Isn’t this what you wanted?”

“Ay no! I told you to make him your husband not to fornicate with him!” She dug frantically through her purse. “I know I have some holy water in here somewhere.”

“Mother! Please leave before Ryan gets--”

“Gabriella? Babe? Are you up yet?”

Gabi squealed in horror as she heard Ryan enter the apartment and call out to her.

“They didn’t have the brand you usually like but this one looks okay,” he said as he walked into her bedroom in sweats and a hoodie, his hair still messy from sleep. He halted in shock when he saw Gabi’s mother standing above her daughter with her arms crossed.

“Isabella! Hi. I was just, uh, bringing Gabi some breakfast. I came from my apartment--”

“Save it. I’ll see you two at church on Sunday. I’m sure Father Hernandez would love to hear your confession.” She stalked out of the room trying not to laugh at the fearful expressions on Ryan and Gabriella’s faces. She loved messing with her kids.

“Well, that was awkward,” Ryan said when they heard the front door close.

“And this isn’t?” Gabi asked with a laugh.

Ryan crawled across the bed to give her a kiss. “Nope.”

“Ew Ryan! I haven’t brushed my teeth yet.”

He patted the top of her head. “Or your hair,” he snorted. He kissed her on the forehead and climbed out of the bed. “Hurry up and shower and get dressed. We have to be at work in an hour and a half.”

She yelped and clambered out of the bed, tripping over the sheets on her way to the bathroom smiling as Ryan laughed at her.

They rode to work in comfortable silence for a while until Ryan decided to ask Gabi the question that had been on her mind all morning.

“So. What does this mean?”

Gabi feigned confusion. “What does what mean?” she asked innocently.

Ryan rolled his eyes. “You know what I’m talking about.”

She sighed and looked out of the window. “I don’t know what it means.”

“What do you want it to mean?” he inquired. “Gabriella?”

“I mean, it’s obvious that I like you...a lot. But like I told you last night, that scares me. I don’t want to get hurt.”

He peered over at her while they were stopped at a light. “Who hurt you before? Was it Michael?”

Gabi looked down at her hands and willed herself not to start crying. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she said quietly.

Ryan placed his hand over hers. “Don’t cry, sweetheart. We don’t have to talk about it right now. But eventually, I would like for you to tell me. Whether or not we pursue a relationship is irrelevant to the fact that we’re friends.”

She gave him a small smile and nodded, secretly enjoying the fact that he had called her “sweetheart”.

They pulled into the parking lot and he wiped her face with his thumb. “It’s going to be a great day. Will you join me for lunch?”

She shook her head with a grimace. “Michael scheduled a lunch meeting for the department today.”

“Okay, then I’ll see you at five,” he said sadly.

Gabi laughed and looked around the parking lot before pulling him in for a quick kiss. “Don’t sound so sad.”

He grinned at her. “Can’t help it.”

“You had sex.”

“Angela!” Gabi flushed deeply as the store clerk coughed in surprise when Angela walked up behind them and made her declaration. “I’m sorry about her ma’am. Thank you for your help but I think I can take it from here.”

She smiled politely and dragged Angela to the other side of the formal wear section. “What the hell is wrong with you?” she hissed.

Angela shrugged. “I call it like I see it. And this glow you have right now can only be the result of earth shattering, mind-blowing sex.”

Gabi scoffed and started looking through the dresses. It was early Saturday afternoon and she had no clue what she wanted to wear. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Oh save it for someone who believes you. What happened? Was it Ryan?”

“Why would you assume it’s Ryan?”

“AHA! So you did have sex with someone.”

Gabi rolled her eyes, annoyed at herself for falling into Angela’s trap. “Maybe,” she said hesitantly. “Maybe not.”

Angela frowned. “Why won’t you talk to me anymore?” she asked quietly. “We used to share everything.”

Gabi immediately felt terrible. “I’m sorry Ang. Things are just...complicated.”

“It’s okay,” Angela replied with a shake of her head. “You’ll talk to me when you’re ready. You always do. In the meantime, let’s find you a dress.”

They spent four hours in the Galleria searching for a dress before finding the perfect one in Nordstrom. It was a glittery pale pink gown that hugged her curves before flaring out into a dramatic train at the bottom. Gabi was a bit hesitant to buy it because her back was out but Angela and Lizzie (via FaceTime) told her that they would no longer be friends with her if she didn’t buy that dress.

She got home and hung the dress up in the back of her closet before settling down to read. She hadn’t heard from Ryan all day but she wasn’t going to allow that to make her upset. It wasn’t like they were in a relationship.

Despite all of the reassurance in her head, she practically jumped over the couch to reach her phone on the charger when she received a message around 4:30. It was from Ryan. She felt her heart leap into her throat when she read the message.

Hey babe. Get dressed and be ready by 6:30. I’m taking you out tonight.

She was typing her reply when another message came through.

Wasn’t a question Gabriella. Get dressed.

She fought back a smile.

By the way, I think that red dress hanging in the front of your closet would be perfect.

Gabi frowned. She didn’t own a red dress. She walked into the closet and sure enough there was a red cocktail dress hanging there with a note on the hanger.

Surprise ;)
