The Double Date
“Mallory! The man child is here for you!” Avery’s voice sounded from the bottom of the stairs as I quickly shoved my feet into my sneakers. Avery had just finished helping me get ready when the doorbell sounded, indicating that Easton had arrived. Five minutes had passed since then, and for some reason, I couldn’t get the weird fluttery feeling out of my stomach. I was now seated on the edge of my bed, building the courage to go downstairs.
What was I so anxious about?
Noah and Danielle were the ones actually going on a date. There was no reason for me to feel jittery. Easton and I were simply background characters making it all happen.
Truth be told, deep down I knew the reason why I was so nervous. I had never gone on a date before, hell I’d never even had a boyfriend, and despite this being a fake date, it didn’t stop my heart from feeling jumpy.
Taking a deep breath, I glanced over at my mirror and raked a hand through my hear and stood up from my bed. Just as I swung the door to my bedroom open, I was met with Easton’s wide smile. I was taken aback by him being upstairs and I didn’t say anything as my eyes moved left towards Avery who stood being Easton with a defeated expression.
“I was just coming down.” I said as Easton pushed his way into my room. His hands were hidden behind his back and as he stood there silently with a silly smile latched onto his face. His eyes briefly gave me a once over and I could feel my self consciousness rise as I crossed my arms across my chest.
I watched him smile goofily as his eyes met mine, “You were taking too long so I decided to come up.” He finally said after a moment of silence. Before I could say anything, he finally brought his arms to the front, and in his hand was a single sunflower.
I could the butterflies in my stomach emerge all at once as I stared at Easton with a dumbfound expression. I had never considered myself a flower person before, but Easton looked so proud of his gift, and I couldn’t help it when a grin also emerged on my face as I took the flower from him.
Carefully placing it on top of my desk, I turned back to him with a small smile, “Thank you, but we aren’t the ones going on a date.” I said to him as I cocked my head to the side. I watched as he ran a hand through his hair before shrugging and flashing me a wink.
“Doesn’t hurt to practice.” He said as his smile grew wider. I could feel the sexual joke coming, but before he could utter another word, I grabbed his arm and began pulling him out of the room. His laughs sounded loudly in the hallway as I rushed him down the stairs, Avery following closely behind us.
Opening the front door, I turned back to see if Easton was following, but instead caught him and Avery in a silent conversation. They both were blankly staring at one another before Avery slowly made the ‘I’m watching you’ motion with her eyes and hands. Easton responded with a salute before turning to me and tossing my keys that he must have grabbed from the door side table.
Barely catching them, I quickly waved to Avery before following Easton to my car. My mom was due to come home any minute now, and I wanted to get out the house before she could say anything embarrassing.
And knowing her, she’d make it a big deal if she found out I was going on my ‘first date’.
Easton would never let me live that one down.
Shutting the front door behind me, I made my way to my car where Easton stood leaning on the door to the passenger side.
I hated to admit it, but in this moment, I kind of understood why all the girls fawned over him.
The kid was hot.
“Ready to go, madame?” He asked as I rounded over to the drivers side. Easton still didn’t have his driving pirveages back, and as a part of our deal, I was still his ‘personal cheafuerr’ as he liked to call it. There were times that I wanted to ask him what he had done to get his car taken away, but I always ended up backing out.
“Let’s do this.” I answered as we both slid into our seats. Pushing the key into the ignition, I watched as Easton buckled in before reclining his seat slightly and laying back comfortably. I let out a small laugh before putting the car into drive and pulling out of my neighborhood.
Our ride was mostly filled with a peaceful silence aside from the mini argument we had over who got to choose the music. The rain had briefly stopped for a couple hours, but dark clouds were still visible in the sky, meaning that the weather would still be disgusting and wet for the remainder of the night.
I could see Noah and Danielle sitting on a bench in front of the movie theatre as I pulled into the first parking spot I saw. They both seemed so engrossed in their conversation that they barely heard Easton and I heading towards them. Easton and I both flashed one another a funny look as we stopped in front of them and waited for them to notice us.
Danielle was the first to finally glance over, as she greeted us with a bright smile. Seeing her, Noah also turned around and greeted both Easton and I, “About time you two got here.” Noah jokingly said as he flashed a pointed look to Easton when Danielle wasn’t looking. I held in my laugh as I walked beside Danielle who was dressed in an adorable floral skirt and jean jacket. Noah and Easton walked behind us, but they were engrossed in their own conversation as they whispered to one another secretly.
I didn’t even want to know what those two were discussing.
“So, how long have you two been together?” Danielle randomly asked as we made our way towards the line to purchase the movie tickets.
“Who?” I responded in question before it dawned on me that she was talking about Easton and I.
God Mallory, you idiot!
“Oh! Easton and I.” I chuckled as I slightly tapped my head, “We’ve only been together for a couple of months.” I answered as I forced a grin onto my face.
I was a horrible liar, and on top of that, I did not know how to do this whole fake girlfriend thing.
Why couldn’t Easton and I just tell them that we were cousins?!
“Well, you two are adorable. Noah was telling me about how you guys also lived close to one another? That must be super cool.” She said as I nodded my head with the forced smile still on my face.
If only you knew, Danielle.
“Yeah! It’s super great. Really convenient for when we hang out” I answered as we moved up in line. Danielle nodded in agreement as we both moved forward in line. She seemed to be buying the whole relationship act, so maybe I wasn’t as bad of a liar as I thought. Clearing my throat, I lowered my voice as I leaned in closer to her, “So, how are you and Noah doing?” I asked, trying to get some insight on how she felt about Noah. He seemed to like her a lot, and I hoped she felt the same about him.
I watched with a bright smile on my face as her cheeks flushed and her grin grew wider. Danielle looked like a giddy school girl as she answered, “He’s such a sweetheart! I was hesitant at first because I tend to go for quieter guys, but he’s such a gentleman, and he always makes me laugh! I’m glad you two asked us to go on this date, because god knows how long he would’ve taken to ask me.” She said to me as we both burst into laughter.
She wasn’t lying about that part. Noah really did need a push to ask her out, and I was glad it finally happened.
Danielle and I continued giggling to ourselves about the guys, and it seemed like they had enough of our whispering as Easton finally turned to us. “Something funny?” He asked with his arms crossed across his chest as he stared at me with raised brows.
Mirroring his actions, I crossed my arms across my chest and answered, “Nope.” I said with a stone cold expression. He kept his brows raised and his lips in a thin line before a grin finally emerged on his face. I could hear Noah and Danielle laughing at the two of us, but before we could say or do anything else, the ticket handler called us to come forward.
Noah and Danielle stepped forward first, and Easton and I stayed back in line as I rummaged through my purse for my wallet. I didn’t expect Easton to pay for me since we weren’t actually on a date, but before I could pull out my wallet, Easton grabbed my hand and pulled us out of the line.
“What are you doing? We were up next.” I asked him as I glanced back at the long line in disbelief. There was no way Easton just pulled us out of the line right when we were up next. Turning to him with an irritated expression, I held my hands up in question. He quickly shushed me and whispered for me to ‘go along with it’ as he turned to Noah and Danielle with a smile on his face.
Wiping the frown off my face, I turned around to face Noah and Danielle who looked at us with confused expressions, “Why’d you guys get out of line?” Noah asked as he held up his tickets.
Before I could rat Easton out, he spoke up, “I forgot my wallet in the car, so we have to go back and get it.” Easton answered with a fake irritated expression as I looked at him with raised brows. I could see the outline of his wallet inside his pocket, but I kept my mouth shut as I watched him talk to Noah.
“I can pay for you and Mallory, and you can pay me back some other time.” Noah offered as Easton just shook his head.
“It’s alright, you two go in and we’ll catch up to you guys after we get our tickets.” Easton said as he wrapped an arm around me. I felt the urge to shove his arm off me for making us go back into that long line, but I held it in as I kept a smile plastered on my face.
“Suit yourself.” Noah shrugged, as he and Danielle waved goodbye and headed towards the snack booth as Easton pulled me towards the exit. As soon as we were out of their line of sight, I shoved Easton’s arm off me and turned to face him, “What gives? Your wallet is in your pocket! I asked him angrily as he held his hands up in surrender.
“Calm down, crazy” Easton said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of movie tickets. I furrowed my brows in confusion as I looked up at him for an explanation, “I already bought our tickets before coming to your house. I wanted to give Noah and Danielle a chance to be alone and get their own seats.” He explained as it finally dawned on me. I slowly nodded my head in understanding as my irritation diminished.
Easton truly was cupids assistant, and as shocking as it was to say, his plan was genius. Noah and Danielle would have their chance to sit alone and hang out, and hopefully Noah could make his move.
“Just say it already.” Easton cockily said as he stared down at me with a an arrogant smirk on his face.
I knew he wanted me to admit that his plan was great, but there was no way that would happen.
“Say what?” I played dumb as he cocked his head to the side and gave me a look as if to say ‘really’.
I still remained silent as he let out a sigh, “I’ll buy you candy.” He offered as my eyes lit up.
There was no question when it came to candy.
“Your plan was fantastic, you are a genius.” I dramatically said as Easton shook his head at me with a smile on his face.
“Shut up.” He said, as he pulled me into a makeshift headlock. I let out a loud gasp as I tried to shove him away, our laughs resonating all the way to the snack booth.
