Zara gripped the edge of the counter behind her back.
Nathaniel looked furious.
His words didn’t make sense. They couldn’t.
The next second he was before her, looking down at her, so angry, that she took a step behind, her back hitting the counter.
Nathaniel looked at her, reached out and took her palm in his, bringing it to his chest. He placed it over the spot where his heart should be and let it stay.
When she didn’t respond, and continued staring at him in shock, his expression softened just a bit.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead to hers with a gentle touch.
“Say something.“, he said softly, his voice hesitant.
Zara shook her head, her mind refusing to believe his words. “You don’t mean that.”
He sighed, his breath ghosting her skin. She shivered involuntarily.
Stepping in further till he was almost pressed to her body, he took her other hand in his and brought it to his lips.
“I’ve loved you for such a long while, Zara, that it’s killing me from the inside.”
When she began to speak, he shushed her, placing her own fingers over her lips, covered by his. She sniffled against his palm, her eyes till wet.
“I can’t let you go. Don’t ask me to do that.“, he said slowly.
“I’d die before I leave you, Zara.”
Her heart stuttered in her chest and a fresh wave of tears engulfed her. Her shoulders dropped, the fight suddenly leaving her. She felt exhausted, drained.
“Stop crying, please.“, he leaned in, letting go of her palm and pressing his mouth to her cheeks, kissing the tears away. He lifted both of his hands and took her face in his palms.
Staring at her till she looked at him, he swiped at the wetness of her cheeks with his thumbs.
“Do you know what I see when I look at you, Zara?”
She didn’t answer him but he kept going.
“I see a stunning, brave woman.“, he said with feeling, his voice deep and full of something she was afraid of identifying.
“I see someone who is capable of so much love, it terrifies me because I might not be able to compete with that. I see someone who is loyal, who will do anything to protect the people she loves. I see someone I respect and admire. I see a woman so fucking beautiful inside out that it hurts to think of a life without her.”
The tears spilled over once again.
Nathaniel groaned and the next moment he was kissing her.
Zara slumped against him, her body finally giving in.
Her lips fused to his. She kissed him hard, reveling in his touch, grabbing his arms, trying to push herself up against him.
He let out a low groan again, his hands leaving her face and reaching for her hips. He picked her up and seated her on the counter. She immediately wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled her to him. But there was no need. Nathaniel was grabbing her already, pulling her body to his, his tongue delving into her mouth.
He wasn’t slow or gentle. His kiss was demanding, all powerful, all consuming. He pushed his tongue into her mouth again and again, possessing her senses and letting her think of nothing except the here and now. How he was making her feel.
When she turned away for breath, he didn’t stop, instead kissing her cheeks, drinking her tears away. He grabbed her face once more, his mouth going to her eyelids, wiping away the moisture that had gathered there.
“I never want to see you crying again. I’ll never ever let you cry again. It kills me, Zara. Oh God, it kills me.“, he sounded pained, his body trembling.
Zara tilted her head and took his lips. Her fingers went to the waistband of his jeans, tugging at the belt. He put a hand on hers, preventing her from unbuckling it.
She moaned into his mouth in frustration. Grabbing the hem of his tshirt, she pulled it up, breaking their kiss for just a second so he could take it off.
Nathaniel pulled it over his arms and flung it across the room. She felt almost unhinged by the way he clung to her. Her fingers splayed across his stomach, running across his skin over and over again. His fingers were digging into her waist and she knew that he was probably hurting her. But it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered except how much she wanted him inside her.
Her fingers inched higher and higher, while he made love to her mouth. He smothered her with kisses, his tongue exploring every inch of her mouth.
When she reached his flat male nipple, he jerked in her hold and she took advantage of his momentary lapse.
She broke the kiss, her lips attaching themselves to his jaw where she traced a line of nips till she reached his ear. His hands moved up her stomach and held her just below her breasts. He was rigid between her thighs, his length swollen and pressing against her softness.
When her lips dropped to his neck, he shuddered in her arms. She let one hand trail down his chest, and flicker just once against his pectoral muscles.
He felt so strong underneath her touch. So warm and perfect.
“Zara, you need to stop-“, he hissed through clenched teeth.
Why wasn’t he touching her?
She sucked the skin of his neck, licking it, her need for him feverish.
He said he loved her.
He said he-
She cried out in surprise when he finally snapped, his palms cupping her breasts through the thin cotton of her tshirt.
Her lips on his skin froze. His touch felt like heaven. Like fucking nirvana. Her arms curled around his neck, holding on tightly to him. His thumbs swiped against her nipples, pebbling them, making goosebumps rise on her skin.
“I love you, Zara. I love you so much.“, his voice was hoarse.
Something inside her melted and she pulled back slightly, looking up at him. She was surprised to see him watching her, his chocolate brown eyes swirling with emotion.
She was going to lose her mind if he kept looking at her like that.
Before she could think of anything else, his hands left her breasts and swiftly slipped inside her shirt.
And then he stopped.
Zara looked at him in confusion and massive frustration.
She grabbed his biceps, struggling not to move against him, to assuage the throbbing between her legs.
“Why did you stop?“, she asked breathlessly, her senses reeling.
Nathaniel leaned down and touched her lips softly, in the most gentle kiss.
“I want to make love to you, Zara. Nothing less. And I want to do it right.”
“I want you to be sure.“, he said softly, leaning his forehead against hers, his fingers gentle against the bare skin of her waist and stomach, slowly caressing, igniting a fire deep within her that she couldn’t hope to put out.
She gulped, her mind suddenly going blank.
Nathaniel didn’t say anything. He just held her, waiting for her answer.
Zara closed her eyes, her mind warring with her heart. She knew her feelings for Nathaniel ran deep, that this wasn’t just an infatuation for her. It meant more. He meant more.
He was right. She couldn’t let her past experiences dictate her future actions. She couldn’t let her father’s non existent parenting ruin her chance at something real with Nathaniel.
He loved her.
He really did.
She could feel it. In his every action. In the way he touched her. In his kisses. It was almost reverential.
The most important question was could she find the courage in herself to risk her heart for him?
