Chapter 1

This house was big. Actually, big was an understatement. Even large wouldn’t give the home justice so the only word that would serve some kind of decent description to this place was enormous. This was nothing like places I would normally be, it was fancy and classy, the kind of home the wealthy people of North Carolina would have. I wasn’t one of those people, not even close. I was sitting uncomfortably on this soft and perfectly white couch with my hands rested in my lap as my fingers locked tightly together, afraid that I would touch something the wrong way or get something dirty. I was holding my hands so tightly that I was sure my circulation was busting but I couldn’t calm my nerves, I had no idea what kind of questions this woman was going to ask me. The name on the ad I found was Alexandra Reid, she and her husband was looking for a nanny for their two year old son. I internally rolled my eyes at the word nanny. Why can’t people just use the word babysitter? Nanny is way too formal.

It all started when my dear old dad lectured me on not going to college and how I was doing nothing with my life. As usual when the lecture comes up, I nodded my head and told him that I was waiting until I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life but then he did something different from all of the other times. He told me to pack my bags and that he was done taking care of me if I wasn’t going to try to take care of myself. I seriously thought he was joking, but he wasn’t. He didn’t even give me a few days to find a place to stay, he told me he was fed up and to be out by the end of the night. So I had spent the past 3 days at my best friend Amber’s house while looking for jobs to apply to. Then I came across this ad in the newspaper. Which I would have never seen unless Amber’s dad didn’t read the paper every morning.

I had called Alexandra the following afternoon and we set up a time to meet for today’s interview, but now I was questioning my choice in clothes. My attire was definitely not fancy enough for this place and surely she wouldn’t want someone any lower than her class taking care of her child? But then again, isn’t that what nannies are to them?

My eyes scanned the room at the photos that were hanging on the wall, some of paintings that looked far too expensive and some of family portraits. The frames even looked quite expensive in my opinion, but somehow everything seemed to blend together perfectly.

My head turned to the doorway as a tall, slender brunette woman walked in with a smile on her face. She held a clipboard in her hand and then I realized that shit just got real. As she walked towards me she extended her hand politely, “You must be Allison. I’m Alexandra. It’s very nice to meet you.”

I stood from the couch and shook her hand, returning her smile instantly, “Yes, Allison Prescott. It’s very nice to meet you, Mrs. Reid. You have a beautiful home.”

“Please, call me Alexandra.” Her smile never never faltered as she took a seat in the arm chair and crossed her legs, “Thank you, I’m quite fond of it myself. Though it feels a little too big at times.”

I raised my eyebrows at her words. Hm, rich people problems.

“Let’s begin, shall we?” She asked and before I could even answer her she already started with the questions, “Do you have any previous experience working with children?”

I opened my mouth for a minute, knowing that this was going to be off to a bad start, “Well, no. Not exactly...”

She just nodded her head and wrote something onto her notepad that was located on the clipboard before reading the next question, “Are you comfortable with doing a background check?”

“Absolutely.”

I had no objections with that. I was never in trouble with the law so nothing would show up. A background check was definitely one of the positives I could bring to the interview.

“Do you have a first aid and CPR certificate?” She looked up from her clipboard and at me, tucking her hair behind her ear.

Once again I nodded my head with a smile, “I do. It’s going to expire in a few months but I will most definitely get it renewed.”

I shifted slightly uncomfortably as she continued to jot down her notes for a few minutes. She didn’t say anything for what felt like far too long so I broke the silence, “Is your son around? He’s two, right?”

She smiled as I mentioned her son, “20 months. He’s almost two... He’s out with his dad right now, but I’m sure he would love to meet you. You seem lovely, Allison. I do need to talk this over with my husband, you’re the youngest person I’ve interviewed and we were wanting someone with more experience, but... I really like your personality. So I’m going to talk to my husband and I’ll get back to you, okay?”

Lack of experience was my specialty. Hell, I didn’t even have a resume to give this woman but for some reason my personality was winning her over and I had no idea how. I wasn’t about to question it though, I wanted this job desperately and I knew I could do it.

“Thank you for considering me, Alexandra. I really do appreciate it... Are there any other questions?” There’s had to be other questions because she only asked me a few.

“I did have more,” She admitted, “But I feel like I have enough information for now. She stood from the arm chair and I did the same, following her as she walked out of the room she interviewed me in, “It was a pleasure meeting you. I do suggest that you work on getting that background check, if it’s up to me you’ll be getting a call from us very soon.”

It was surprising that things had went so well. Usually things were either bad or worse for me but this woman seemed to genuinely like me so after leaving her house I had went directly to the police station to get a head start on that police check. It usually takes a few weeks to get the results so the sooner I got it started, the better. I didn’t have anything else to do so I went back to Amber’s house to tell her how the interview had went.

As I fell backwards onto her double bed, she looked at me from her sitting position at her desk, “So... did you get the job?”

“I’m not exactly sure yet. The woman seems to like me but she needs to consult with her husband first and...” I pursed my lips together slightly, twirling one of my blonde locks of hair around my index finger, “The house is absolutely gorgeous though... I didn’t get to see a whole lot but from what I did see, it’s very... wow.”

It was the only word I could think of to explain just how incredible the Reid’s home was, if I did get the job as their son’s nanny then I would get a tour of the place which seemed pretty exciting at the moment.

“What’s the kid’s name?” Amber asked suddenly which made the realization hit me that I had no idea. Amber must have picked up on my silence because she was quick to change the topic, “So when will you know for sure?”

I shrugged my shoulder nonchalantly, “I’m not quite sure, she said she would call me within a few days but just to be safe I’m going to continue looking elsewhere. I don’t want to be in your way for too long.”

“Ugh, shut up. You know I love having you here.”

Even if she did love having me here I could only free load for so long. I needed a job so I could pay my way through life and show my dad that I wasn’t the failure that he thought I was. I was so much more than he thought I could be. It gave me a sense of determination to try harder just to prove him wrong.

“Speaking of being here, Kyle suggested that I spend the night at his place tonight so I’m going to spend the night there...” I took my phone from the pocket of my jeans and checked my texted messages.

I heard the ouu sound come from Amber’s lips and I rolled my eyes as she spoke, “Kyle suggested the you spend the night? How kind of him. I’m sure he’s just doing that to benefit himself.”

“Oh get over yourself, Amber. We’re just friends.” I defended even though we both knew it wasn’t exactly the truth. Kyle and I were friends, but there were some benefits involved also. We weren’t dating though, neither of us wanted that.

She nodded her head, sounding a small Mhm to blow me off, “If that’s what you keep telling yourself.” She stood from her spot on the chair and began gathering a few things before pulling on her jacket, “I have to go to work, I assume you’ll be gone by the time I get back but I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“For sure.” I smiled at her and watched her exit the bedroom before I fell back completely on the bed. If I got this job I needed to make sure I did everything perfectly. I could tell that the woman was very specific by the way she asked me questions. Which means that I need to know about kids. Ugh. I don’t know anything about kids... It can’t be that hard though. Stick out your tongue and tickle their tummy. Problem solved.

The sound of Rihanna’s "Bitch Better Have My Money” woke me up from my amazing sleep the following morning. Recognizing the meaning of the song I instantly knew that it was my cellphone ringing and I sat up quickly, holding the blankets to my bare chest as my eyes scanned the room in search for my phone. All I could see at this point were clothes scattered everywhere, some mine and other Kyle’s.

As the ringing persisted I leaned over the bed and started moving the clothes aside with my hands, rummaging through them in hopes that my phone will be under there somewhere.

Finally the pink phone case became visible under my black lace bra and I pick it up, answering it before the caller decided to hang up.

“Hello?” I asked into the phone. The caller ID wasn’t a contact I had listed so I had no idea who I was even answering the phone to.

The voice on the other line spoke up and I recognized it instantly as Alexandra Reid, “Allison? This is Alexandra. I hope I didn’t wake you...”

I pulled myself back onto the bed slowly, sitting up and leaning against the headboard for support, “No, no. Of course not... I just got out of the shower.” Sure, I lied, but if she thought I was a morning person it would look better for me.

Kyle rolled over on his side to face me with a smirk on his face and I pressed an index finger to my lips to keep him hushed as Alexandra proceeded, “I was wondering if you were available this afternoon for a second meeting?”

“A second meeting?” I questioned. Definitely not what I was expecting.

It was although I imagined her nodding, “Yes. I’m sure you weren’t expecting a second interview, however I thought it would be a good idea to see how you get along with Thomas.”

Ah, so that must be their son’s name.

“Of course. I can be over around two o’clock if that works for you?”

“That’s perfect. We’ll see you then, Allison.” Alexandra replied just before hanging up.

I felt Kyle’s arm snake around my stomach and I looked over to see that his smirk hadn’t faded for a second, “What was that about?” He mumbled, his voice sounding sleepy.

I slid back down completely in the bed and turned to face him, pursing my lips together, “Just this job I’m applying for... They want to have a second interview.”

“That’s a good sign,” he responded before moving his hand up my side and pulling me closer to him. My naked body pressed against his and I giggled as he rolled over on top of me, “Should we celebrate, or...?”

My laughter continued and I shook my head, “I haven’t got the job, Kyle. It’s just an interview.”

He pressed his lips to my bare neck, leaving kisses on my skin and moving his lips to my jawline, “Fine... How about a little good luck ritual?”

Instinctively my arms wrapped around his neck and I threw my head back to look at him, “I need to get ready... I have a lot to do before this afternoon. Rain-check?”

His smirk turned into a frown and he pressed his lips against mine, kissing me in a hungry manner that I reciprocated instantly. As he pulled away he nodded his head, “I’ll be counting on that rain-check.”

Kyle and I had a weird relationship. The kind of relationship that wasn’t a relationship to begin with. We met in high school and spoke a few times but were never really friends, he had so many girls falling over him he had no reason to need anyone else to pay attention to. A year or so after graduation we ended up at the same bar drinking together and the next thing I knew I was waking up in his bed the next morning. We had a mutual understanding that neither of us wanted a relationship but we wanted to continue what we were doing. It may seem completely ridiculous but we had respect for each other and there was no harm in two friends enjoying each others company. Neither of us expected anything out of it, and if something eventually did emerge then we would deal with it at the time.

After leaving Kyle’s apartment I went back to Amber’s house to take a shower and get dressed for the day. She wasn’t home so it made my process of getting ready go faster. After changing into a blue dress with a brown belt, I slipped on a pair of matching brown sandals and grabbed my purse. To bring my schmooze level to a all new high, I headed to the closest Toys R Us and buying a plastic blue toy ball for Thomas. Rule 1: Get the kid to like you.

I then headed over to the Reid’s home when I realized that two o’clock was approaching and by the time I arrived it was 1:50. Better early than late, right? I walked up the driveway and took a deep breath before knocking on the door, turning away and looking around the property as I waited for my knocks to be greeted. The property was large itself. I imagined that the little boy had a lot of fun running around and playing outside, if only I knew how to entertain kids I’m sure there would be a million things to do around here.

The front door opened and I turned back around to face a smiling Alexandra. “Allison! You’re early. That’s unexpected, but I’m impressed. Come on in, Thomas is in the backyard with his father.”

I returned the smile and followed her inside as she closed the door behind me. She began to walk throughout the house with me not far behind, “Thank you for calling me back. I’m very exciting to meet Thomas.”

“He’s quite excited to meet you also. His last nanny left so abruptly... so we’re hoping to have someone reliable and that intends on sticking around for a while. Would you be able to guarantee at least a year of your services?” She glanced back at me as she spoke but didn’t stop walking.

A guarantee year? Well, I suppose a year wouldn’t be too much to guarantee. Once we’ve reached an agreement I would agree with no questions asked. “Absolutely... After all of the terms and conditions have been discussed, I’m more than will to agreed to a year.”

“Understandable.” She nodded as we reached the back door and she opened it.

As soon as we stepped into the backyard, my eyes landed on the little boy with brown hair who was running around the grass laughing. Behind him was a tall man with dark brown hair, chasing him. As the man reached him, he picked the little boy up in his arm which caused the boy to start giggling nonstop.

He looked towards where Alexandra stood, his smile growing wider, “Mommy! Hewlp!”

Alexandra just laughed and walked over to them, taking the little boy from the man’s arms and giving him a hug as she held him onto her hip, “Thomas, remember I said you were going to meet somebody today?” The little boy nodded his head quickly while Alexandra turned to face me motioning for me to come over.

I walked over to them and smiled at the little boy, “Hi, Thomas. I’m Allison...”

Thomas smiled at me, “Hi Assin”

I giggled at his mispronunciation of my name, he was really cute. I expected him to be shy or something but he didn’t seem to care about meeting a stranger at all.

“Oh! And let’s not forget...” She motioned towards the man who had been playing with Thomas when we arrived, “This is my husband Matthew. He’s around the house often but his work is very demanding. He often works from home but he never knows when he’s going to get called to the office. When he is home, he isn’t always able to take care of Thomas due to the amount of work he has.”

I looked towards Matthew who looked like he had already been working today. He was dressed in a white button down shirt that was tucked into his black pants and the sleeves were rolled up to his elbows.

Before I had a chance to extend my hand he had already extended his to me, “Pleasure to meet you, Allison.”

I smiled at him, shaking his hand gently, “Very nice to meet you, Matthew. I was telling Alexandra yesterday that your home is stunning... The backyard is no exception.”

As our hands pulled apart, he chuckled and pushed his hands into the pockets of his pants, “Well, the inside is all her doing. She’s an interior designer so she designed everything on her own. Isn’t that right, sweetheart?”

Alexandra smiled at the compliment and nodded her head, “It’s a passion, really. I get to design homes all around the world... It’s exciting to say the least.”

I turned my attention to Thomas who was pulling at his mother’s earring and I motioned towards the bag I was holding from Toys R Us, “I bought a little something for Thomas if it’s okay with the both of you...”

“Allison, that’s so kind of you. You didn’t have to do that...” Alexandra said as she set Thomas onto the ground, “What do you say to Allison, Thomas?”

Thomas looked up at me, “Um...”

“You say Thank You,” Alexandra said to him.

“Thanks you.”

I knelt down on the ground in front of him and passed him the bag so he could open in for himself, “You’re very welcome, Thomas. I hope you like it.”

I watched as he reached inside of the bag with both little hands and pulled out the blue plastic ball I had bought for him, his face lighting up with excitement. He turned to his parents, “Ball! Daddy, look!”

“Wow! That’s really nice,” Matthew said, gleaming at his son’s excitement. He then looked at me with a charming smile, “He loves those. I swear you can give the kid an entire sandbox and shovels to himself and he’ll still want the a single bouncy ball.”

That was a relief. At least I a selected a good toy to bring for him. “That’s good to know... At least he’s easy to satisfy.”

“So, Allison.” This was Alexandra chiming in. I look over at her as she spoke, “We can write up a one year contract as we don’t want Thomas to get attached to anyone without reason. The pay was listed in the ad which I’m sure there shouldn’t be an issue with since you’ll also be provided a place to stay and food?”

I blinked a few times, completely caught off guard by her words, “Wait... Sorry, what? A place to stay? Food?”

She nodded her head slowly, “Yes. The ad says clearly, we’re looking for a live-in nanny. Will that be an issue for you?”

As her eyebrows raised I instantly shook my head before she could even second guess considering me for the job, “No, of course not.”

“Fantastic. You’ll have access to everything around the house... the pool, the game room, the hot tub, and so on. Along with the job of watching Thomas there will be some house responsibilities that I hope you’re okay with also. Some cleaning up and grocery shopping.” She waved her arm slightly, “It will all be in the contract and you can look it over.”

Did I apply to be a babysitter, or a maid?

“Yeah, of course.” I stood from my spot on the ground, dusting off my dress, “So when would you like me to start? I would need to move in and everything. Which reminds me, I need to get to know the house a little more. It’s much bigger than what I’m used to.”

She paused for a moment as though she were thinking about her answer. She tapped her chin lightly, “Monday would be a good time to start. I’ll rearrange the guest room for you this weekend and on Monday we can move everything in and give you a tour then as well... You’ll get the hang of it in no time, trust me.”

“That sounds fantastic. Thank you both very much,” I turned and looked down at Thomas who was contently playing with his ball still, “I’ll see you next week, buddy.”

He lifted his hand and waved at me with a wide smile before turning back to his dad and pushing the ball to him.

Alexandra had walked me to the door and we said our goodbyes. Everything had fallen together much faster than I had even expected them to. On Monday I would he leaving Amber’s home and moving into a complete strangers house to take care of their son and apparently keep their house clean for them too. They seemed like nice people. They really did, and this was my chance to prove something to my dad. Not just my dad but to myself. On an even more thrilling note, I would be living in an incredible house with amazing luxuries at my fingertips. All for free. How did that even happen? On Monday day everything would change and hopefully it would all be for the better.
