Chapter 7

Madison
I looked forward to going to physiology on Wednesday and decided to put a little extra effort in my outfit and even wore a full face of makeup. As mush as I wanted to deny it, Knox had grown on me and I wanted to impress him. I could see that he was trying to change his fuckboy ways and I appreciated the effort he had been putting towards becoming a better person.

I was finishing up my shift at the local cafe near campus when a group of girls came in, it was Alyssa and her sorority minions. She was one of Knox’s little flings and that had even tried to get with Kellan to after Knox wanted nothing to do with her. From what I heard she tried to claim Knox as her man but he denied her every time she tried. My co-worker had their table but her shift ended before mine so I had to bring out their drinks and food orders. I put on a fake smile and went over to wait their table.

“Just the person I wanted to see.”

“What do you want Alyssa?”

“For you to stay away from Knox.”

“Kinda hard to do when we have a project to do together.”

“Don’t get smart with me, I want you to know that Knox is mine and you will never have a chance with him.”

“Last time I checked Knox was single and can hang out with anyone he wants. You’re just upset that he actually wants to hang out with me and not you. I’m not going to argue with you about a guy that I’m not even dating. If you’re not going to order anything you need to leave because there are other customers that would like to sit down and eat.”

“Knox loves spending time with me, who do you think he was with last weekend?”

“I don’t care.”

“You do care and I know that you will take my advice and leave Knox alone. Now be a good waiter and get us all the house salad with extra veggies and no dressing. The salads better get to us in a timely manner or you’ll be getting no tip.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes, can I get a sparkling water with lemons and six ice cubes.”

“Sure thing, I’ll be right back with your food.” If my night couldn’t get any worst Knox walked in and gave me a smile and wave then sat down at one of our corner booths. Alyssa saw him and went over to sit in the seat across from him. From where I was behind the counter she tried to get his attention but he focused more on the menu in front of him. She even tried to feel his arm and kiss his cheek but he dodged both before saying something to her that had her stomping back to her table.

I was putting the salads on her table when she sat back down and glared at me. I walked away and went to where Know was sitting.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you until tomorrow.”

“I know, I had a rough weekend and needed to see you.”

“I’m honored, although I don’t think your girlfriend over there would like that.”

“Alyssa is not my girlfriend, I went out with her once but never slept with her like she told everyone else. She’s been with too many of my teammates for me to actually sleep with her, I have some standards you know.”

“I know, she thinks we’re dating and warned me to stay away from you.”

“She’s all bark no bite. I promise you I have done nothing with her and don’t plan on taking her up on her many offers any time soon.”

“I know, I trust you.”

“I appreciate that. What time do you get off?” I looked at my watch and saw that my shift was about to end soon.

“In about five minutes, have you already ordered yet?”

“Nope, I was just going to wait for you.”

“Okay, let me finish up my tables and I’ll come back with some food for us.”

“How about I take you out instead? You deserve it for dealing with me and my asshole ways for so long .” I smiled at him and nodded before walking away to finish my orders and clock out.

“Where are we going?” I asked as he stood up and took my book bag from me and carried it as if it weighed nothing when I knew it weighed a ton from all the books I had in it. He grabbed my hand be we walked out of the cafe towards my car.

“How does some good Chinese food sound?”

“That sounds great, I’ll follow you there.”

“Okay, it’s not far from your apartment so we can go there first to drop your stuff off and can take my car to the restaurant.”

“That’s fine.” He opened the door for me and kissed my cheek before closing the door. He made sure my car started and went to his own then followed me to apartment. I went in and put my book bag away and changed out of my uniform and walked out to his car.

“You look beautiful but could’ve kept your uniform on.”

“I wanted to change and thank you.”

“No problem.” We made it to the restaurant a few minutes later and sat at a table near the back so that we could talk without any interruptions. After ordering our food, Knox asked me how my weekend went and I decided since we were on the topic I would ask him about his.

“So what was your emergency this weekend?”

“My little sister got in a car accident and didn’t get released until this morning so we were helping out our parents with the younger ones while they were at the hospital with her.”

“Is she okay?”

“She’s fine, just a few scratches and bruises. The guy that was driving had been drinking and there were to many of them in the car. She got lucky because things could’ve been worse. I’m worried about her, she’s only 17 and the friends she has are taking her down the wrong path. I’ve never seen my parents that upset and I’ve done a lot of shit to make them mad.”

“Maybe she’s going through a faze and this will help her realize that she can’t keep these people as friends.”

“I hope so, I hate that I’m not home as much to keep her on the right track but I realize that she’s got to make mistakes and learn from them.”

“She’s got an amazing big brother who cares a lot about her, even if something were to happen she’d have you to help her get back up on her feet.”

“Thank you for being my voice of reason, for awhile I blamed myself.”

“You can’t blame yourself for her actions. It’s not your fault that you couldn’t be there for her as often as you could, you had to worry about school and football. At some point she changed from your innocent sister and began her journey into becoming a young woman. It’s hard finding genuine friends these days so give her sometime and she’ll find some that won’t be the reason for her downfall but the reason she becomes highly successful.”

“Have you found those friends yet?”

“I mean my roommate and I are close but we’re not that close, I really didn’t have time to make friends because I was so worried about my brother.”

“Am I your friend?”

“Yes you are my friend, it’s weird I tell you more things then I tell my roommate and I hated you when I first met you. But I’m glad we’re friends.”

“I’m glad we’re friends to.” We smiled at each other and went back to eating our food. After we finished Knox took me home and walked me to my apartment door.

“I had a great time tonight.”

“I’m glad you did, I’ll see you in class tomorrow.”

“Mhm.” He stared at me for a moment before leaning in to give me a kiss. I was shocked at first but started to respond, the moment I realized we were outside my apartment door and anyone could come up and see us. As much as I didn’t want to I pulled away and went inside my apartment before I changed my mind and invited Knox in to do some very friendly things.
