Chapter 1

Jenny was sitting on the floor of the bedroom with her eyes closed. She was close to tears, but still she was smiling. There was no reason not to smile. Life has been kind, it gave her what a lot of people dream about but never get. She was given true love. And it wasn't just a beautiful phrase.

People usually say how much they love each other, they tell each other that they can't live without the other, they promise to be together forever... Nick never told her that he loved her. He never promised her that they would be together until death separates them. But his caring arms were always there when she needed them so much. He believed in her, even when her parents said she wouldn't be able to get that job. He encouraged her to start a new project, he was her inspiration afterwards. He never lied to her. When her friends told that she looked fantastic in a new dress, he was the only one to tell her that it didn't suit her at all. Nick was there when Jenny's father died. He didn't say he was sorry like the others, instead he sat there beside her, wiping away the tears from her face.

As long as Jenny could remember, Nick was always near. When she was with her friends, when she was alone, when she was happy, when she was sad, when she was ill... He was always there. And he was always smiling.

Once she asked him why he was smiling. He began explaining. The last phrase that he told her that day, Jenny still remembers. He said that people should always smile, even when it hurts. That way you will be able to survive and deal with your problems.

She didn't understand his words then. How can you smile when there is nothing to be happy about?! And he told her that one day she would understand. And she did.

Nick left her last week. No, he didn't fall in love with another girl, he didn't move to another country. He was gone. Gone. With no way of getting back. No more reassuring words, no more Saturday movies, no more hugs and no more of his love and friendship. Can people be friends and love each other? Yes. Jenny was sure that they can. She still thinks that a person only can love his true friend. And to those who say she doesn't know what true love means, she can answer that they don't know what true friendship is.

Finally Jenny opened her eyes and let the tears fall. But she didn't stop smiling. Because you should always smile, even when it hurts.

Pilleip: It is one of the most unique stories I have recently read. Kind of a mix of vampires and Dan Brown. Hours of first class entertsinment. A must read. I hope it will get a sequel and that jappens soon.

Diana123: Wow! This story is very emotional to begin with. And then it is also exciting, interesting and amazing. There are so many moment and situations in this story that really moved me and made me want to cry (to begin with – the story about little Norm not knowing what a hug is, then the death of his ...

hsng12: A very nice book to read with lots of touching moments. It makes me reflect on my life, learn how to appreciate love from people around us. The story needs a bit of editing here and there just to make it perfect. Overall message well conveyed and I love it. It made me tear, really inspiring I wou...

softprose: Honestly, this book already has me on my toes, I can't wait to buy the physical copy! It is like a fresh breath of air when reading this. I've already fallen in love with all of the characters! This will be one of those books I'll read over and over again without getting bored of it.

Maciej Rybczynski: I got into this book yesterday and could not stop reading. Good to have it finished as there is plenty other pressing matters. :) The flow of action is excellent. The author managed to keep all the boring parts outside of this book. Really enjoyed reading it.

annie08c: I really like this story, I can relate to it a lot and with how she feels, the boyfriend and the events that happened but I'm a little bit younger. It was really good plot, really liked how you stuck to the topic and you had a new title for every chapter making me guess what's going to happen. Ma...

LouiseJ2: I enjoyed the detail you went into with regards to the case. It made the UNSUB appear believable. The crisis in the middle of the story was my favorite part, very dramatic but not over the top. I feel like sometimes pairings can be overdone but I liked that some of the relationships were a little...

catd69: Karim is a very talented writer. When I started reading his journey it took me into the book and I was in the story till the end. I've never felt this way with any other writers stories. If you want to read a gripping adventure, this will be the one book I would suggest you pick.

cassy466: Great story, however there were some issues with the chapters and some grammar or poor choices of words. It would be better if it was revised before being posted.. and whatever happened to the mother? And how did the relationship with her and peter became what it is.. need more details

PaulSenkel: If you like Arthur C. Clarke's Odyssey, especially The Final Odyssey, then you will probably also enjoy this book. I definitely did.It does, however, address a more adolescent public than the above-mentioned book.I enjoyed the story and finished it in a few days. The overall situation on earth an...

Jean Tryon: As a beta, I found this story outstanding!! Plot, grammar, phraseology, etc Rachel gives us it all. She takes the story into the future from where due South ends. She is an exacting and thoughtful author.

Michelle Shane Hammatt: Well written fiction. I couldn't put it down and read it until I was finished in one sitting. Can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next. The characters were real and you felt like you were watching the story being played before your eyes.

GeorgeS: The author has a VERY refreshingly direct writing style. Sometimes being punched in the gut (or nose, as the case may be) can be an excellent thing, indeed. Whatever may be lacking in subtlety is more than made up for in the diamond clarity of character development. I look forward to MORE. I c...

Mourn8220House: When first reading "Avarice," I thought it would be another fairytale but I was taken back the author's approach and choice of ending.
