Chapter 10: Wound Up

Poppy’s POV

He huffed and shot me an annoyed growl before stomping around. He kicked his boots off, ripped his t-shirt over his head, and undid his belt. He abruptly shoved his pants down which left him standing in my living room in only his briefs. I quietly squealed out of surprise before quickly turning around and placing the palms of my hands against my scorching cheeks.

I stayed turned around while I heard him ruffling with the bedding. When the noise quieted down, I peeked back over my shoulder and released a soft sigh of relief. Clearing my throat, I nodded his way, unable to resist staring into his eyes as he gazed at me intensely.

“Well, I’ll be in my room if you need anything,” I said before turning and walking away. I heaved a great sigh once I was in my room with the door closed and my back against it. I placed my hand over my heart and felt it pounding away in my chest.

My Lord, he’s built like a Greek God I thought to myself while trying to calm down my thrumming body.

Finally getting myself in check, I glanced at the bare walls around me. Determined to get some sort of work done today, I began laying out the plastic tarps to protect the floor before getting out the various paint supplies I needed. I made quick work of wiping off the new walls (just in case there was any dust or debris) and baseboards before taping up all the walls to ensure I wouldn’t get the pain anywhere it wasn’t supposed to go. I finally popped open the lid to the light, cool toned gray paint and proceeded to pour a decent amount into the tray. Dipping my brand new roller into it, I began applying to color to my walls.

When I finished my first wall, I was highly satisfied with my color choice, but my head was beginning to hurt from the fumes. I put a mask over the lower half of my face to keep from breathing it in, but I also cracked the window just the slightest bit to hopefully air the room out.

In total, it took me about three hours from start to finish and I was extremely happy with the outcome. The color, although neutral, was already bringing more life into the room than there was prior. Looking down at myself, I was surprised that I was able to keep all the paint from getting on my clothes - though my skin was a whole other story.

I cleaned up my mess before creeping out into the living room, making sure not to wake Knox if he was still asleep. To my pleasure, he was passed out with his nose pressed against my pillow. I couldn’t help the light giggle that bubbled from my chest at the sight. He was much too big for my bed; his legs hung about three feet off the bottom while one arm was positioned under his head under the pillow and the other hung off the top edge onto the floor just like his feet.

I cursed myself when I took a few steps forward and caused the floorboard to creak with my weight. I held my breath, hoping the noise wouldn’t wake Knox up. I thought I was in the clear, but after taking another few steps - more carefully this time - his voice caught me off guard.

“Don’t even try to sneak up on someone in the future, you’re horrible at it,” he husked out, his voice deep and raspy from sleep. I huffed out in frustration before plopping myself down on the bed next to his body. It was a queen size, but he occupied almost the entire thing leaving a small sliver of space for me.

“I got my room painted!” I exclaimed excitedly with a wide smile, choosing not to respond to what he’d said. The edge of his lips pulled up ever so slightly before he nodded in acknowledgment.

“I know. I can smell it, Flower,” he chuckled.

“Oh…” I murmured, my cheeks blushing from embarrassment, not thinking about how much stronger his sense of smell probably was than mine.

“I called one of the guys that works at the pack warehouse before I finished your roof. He said they have one water heater in stock just in case someones goes out. If we go get it now, you’ll have hot water by the end of the night,” he said with a deeper, huskier voice, changing the subject when he noticed my red cheeks. I squealed happily before bouncing up and down on the bed.

“Yes! Can we go now? Please?” I begged, putting on my best puppy dog eyes. He nodded before sitting up in bed causing the sheets to fall around his waist and expose his perfect physique. I gulped before moving so I could squeeze my legs together to quell the heat between my thighs. Wow...that’s new.

“Whatever you want, baby,” he rumbled out before making quick work of putting his clothes and shoes on. I was contemplating his words the entire time. Baby and flower...I’ve never been called a term of endearment before. Flower was an...unusual one. I’ll have to ask him about it.

He grabbed the keys from my hands just as I’d picked them up while also wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me into his side. I didn’t say anything, just snuggled up to him for warmth as he guided us to my car. I figured it would be best if he drove because I had no clue where we were going, clearly he’d had the same thought process.

His big palm rested on my thigh during the car ride causing his comfortable warmth to seep into my skin. I ran my fingers over his knuckles and fingers, noting every scar and imperfection. I concluded that he must work with his hands a lot as they were marred more than normal. He didn’t seem to mind my thorough scrutiny, just glanced at me every so often.

His arm shot out like a second seatbelt of sorts just before he slammed on the breaks. Caught off guard, I held my breath as we came to an abrupt, screeching halt. Looking up, I was expecting to see a deer or some other form of wildlife, but instead, I was shocked to see another car parked in front of us haphazardly. It was purposely blocking the road.

Little fucking punk,” Knox grunted under his breath before turning to look at me. He inspected me head to toe before concluding that I wasn’t hurt - though that didn’t stop him from still asking me.

“I’m fine, Knox, but what are we waiting for?” I asked, slightly impatient.

“I’m assuming we’re going to find out,” he growled in annoyance as Corbin emerged from the driver’s seat of the car.

“Oh no,” I groaned while letting my head fall back against the headrest.

“What’s wrong?” Knox asked, instantly aware of my more than irritated mood.

“It’s nothing, Corbin just can’t take a hint and I don’t want to be rude because of how much his parents have helped me out,” I muttered, watching as two other men exited the vehicle before falling into step behind Corbin as he approached our car. He stopped right next to Knox’s door and proceeded to tap his knuckles against the window three times. Knox completely ignored him as his gaze was entirely focused on me.

“Has he been giving you problems?” he growled out so low I knew only I could hear him. The deep, manly timber to his voice caused goosebumps to rise all over my skin from both arousal and fear - much to my embarrassment.

“No,” I said with a shake of my head, “I’m just awful at telling people no,” I whispered quietly, matching his volume level as to keep the conversation we were having a secret from those standing just a doors-width away.

“Well, I’m not,” he gruffly stated before swinging the door open as wide as he could, banging it against Corbin’s body and causing him to fall back into his little posse. I couldn’t help the giggle that bubbled from my mouth, so I tried to smother the sound with my hand. Knox heard and looked over his shoulder after he’d exited the car and sent me a mischievous wink. I wasn’t sure whether to be amused or shocked. That was the most emotion I’d ever seen him show on his face - and there wasn’t even a smile or smirk along with it! Just the darn wink.

Such a small act shouldn’t be causing such a large commotion in my body.

“What do you want?” Knox demanded, getting in Corbin’s face and causing him to take a step backward. I felt bad watching Corbin try and act all tough in front of his friends, but I wonder if I was the only one who could see his legs shaking from fear. I didn’t blame him, though. If what they say about Lycans is true, and just from seeing Knox’s wolf the one time, I wouldn’t want to go head to head with him either.

Ever.

“What are you doing with an unmated female? Claiming one of our own wasn’t part of the deal, Knox,” Corbin sneered.

Part of the deal? What deal?

Something Corbin said to Knox struck a chord because he grabbed him by his lapels and had him up against the car with his feet dangling off the ground in less than a second. I gasped loudly, worried for Corbin’s safety. I felt a pang of guilt in my heart because I knew deep down the only reason I was worried about Corbin was because I was ultimately worried about Knox and the consequences of his actions.

“Listen here you little fucking wannabe, you stay out of my mother fucking way and stop sticking your nose into things that don’t concern you. Do you understand?” he asked, though it sounded more like a threat and demand instead of a question. Corbin gulped, and as much as I could see he wanted to preserve his pride, he wanted to live more so he shut his mouth and nodded meekly.

“Tell your father I will be in soon to discuss a few matters of importance with him, but for now get the fuck out of my way,” he ordered, dropping him unceremoniously back onto the ground and growling menacingly. Corbin scrambled off the ground before hissing something at the guys beside him. They all ran back to their car, got in, and sped off.

Knox didn’t finally get back in until he watched their vehicle to make sure they were well and truly gone.

“Are you alright?” I asked, unable to help myself when my hand came to rest on his arm. His body seemed to be buzzing with pent-up energy - no doubt from the anger that was rolling off of him in waves. A sound between a grunt and growl emitted from his chest before he caught me off guard and buried his face in my shoulder. I tensed up for the first few seconds before my body’s knee-jerk reaction went away, realizing that Knox didn’t intend to do me any harm. I was used to this after the first couple of times.

Apparently, my scent alone wasn’t doing it for him. He reached over and unbuckled my seat belt before pulling me into his lap. I didn’t have time to process the move until I was already seated on top of him, straddling his legs as he continued to sniff the base of my neck.

I was scared and nervous before, but this...this was uncharted territory.

“Knox,” I whispered, trying to get his attention. No luck.

“Knox,” I tried again. Still nothing. I huffed in frustration. I really just want to take a hot shower tonight…

“Knox!” I tried again, more forcefully this time. Finally, I got his-oh God!

Nothing in my power could’ve held the breathy moan that released from my chest as his soft lips parted to nip at the skin at the base of my neck. I dug my nails into his forearms to try and ground myself to reality as he continued suckling at my neck with no mercy.

I had no idea what had gotten into him, but my Lord did it feel good. I’d never been touched by another man before - my father made sure of that - so this was something completely foreign to me. When I felt the telltale sensation of his canines playfully scrape against my neck, I expected my wolf to freeze up and take control of my body to prevent this from going too far too quickly, but I was stunned when she spurred his movements on. Instead of pulling away, she took control and tilted our head even farther - giving Knox more access. Realizing that things were moving quickly, Knox pulled away with difficulty.

“Not now,” he purred against the shell of my ear before gently setting me back in my seat. I was shocked when he composed himself and continued the drive to the warehouse like the last 45 minutes had never happened. I tried to calm down my fired up body while fixing my hair and resituating my clothes. My efforts turned out to be useless because the second Knox looked over and caught sight of my disheveled appearance and whatever it was that he was fixated with on my neck, he smirked. The single twitch of the corner of his mouth upwards rocked my being to my core.

My God, he’s beautiful. My breathing hitched for a few seconds, and in that time Knox’s eyes grew dark as night before he looked away and painfully gripped the steering wheel. I tried to discreetly fan myself with my hand, but I was thankfully saved as we pulled up to the warehouse seconds later. I quickly got out, welcoming the freezing wind against my cherry red face.

“Come here,” Knox demanded hotly. I obeyed, not wanting to test him when his wolf was so close to the surface. He wrapped his arm around my waist before playfully nipping at my neck once again. I giggled from the ticklish sensation and half-heartedly pushed him back as we entered the building. We were standing in a small reception-type area with a bathroom to the left and a door to the right of the desk. I figured the entire building was basically just a big stockroom. Knox cleared his throat in order to catch the attention of the guys lingering behind the desk. They immediately shot up as the smell of perspiration started to fill the room.

“Lycan Knox,” they both muttered before slightly bowing.

“I’m here for the water heater. I called and they said they would have it ready for me,” he grunted, completely ignoring their formal greeting.

“Yes. We’ll get that for you right away,” one of the two said before disappearing, dragging the other behind him. I kept my mouth shut, though I was starting to really worry for my sanity. How was it that all the people I’ve ever seen interact with Knox were utterly terrified to the point of their body's shaking and having an impaired ability to form sentences, yet after the first few times I was around him I was fine?

Maybe other people just didn’t take time to get comfortable around him after they'd discovered he was a Lycan like I had. I mean, as far as I knew, he wasn’t any different from any of the other male wolves I knew. In fact, he treated me better than most in my birth pack did. He treated me better than my own father did.

Knox let me deeply ponder my thoughts while we loaded the heater up and drove home. I was thankful for that, as they took a turn for the worst when I began worrying about my mother, sister, and Kiara. It had been three days since Kiara had last contacted me and while I was getting anxious, I knew I didn’t have any other choice other than just biding my time until she called again...
