Chapter 49: Please Don't

Cara

William woke me up by gently shaking my shoulder. My eyelids fluttered apart, and while I adjusted to the light, I studied him through squinted eyes. Drops of sweat crowded his temple, and I saw that the rest of his hairline was also drenched in the bodily fluid. Had he been working out again? Judging from his attire, he wasn’t fresh out of a shower.

Puzzled, I sat up. “Will? Why are covered in sweat?” My voice was hoarse, so I cleared my throat.

“I wanked bloody hard to the thought of you just now. Surprised you didn’t wake.”

Oh, my God. This man. I hadn’t thought myself capable of blushing when I had woken up a mere second ago, but he proved me wrong.

“William, you’ve got a serious mental problem,” I whined in despair of him and collapsed again.

Reduced to a fit of laughter, he doubled over beside my bed. That man never overlooked an opportunity to pull my leg. In spite of it, the elating melody of his laughter made a sincere smile climb to my mouth.

“I couldn’t resist. You should have seen your face. Priceless,” he excused himself when his laughter softened in volume. “I was training in the living area. Borrowed Jason’s weights. Anyway, I’m about to have a shower. Care to join me?”

“No. You jinxed it. You may wank bloody hard to the thought of me instead,” I taunted.

“It’ll be quick,” he argued.

I turned my head to eye him in my scepticism. “You can’t do quick.”

“Yes, I can. I’ll show you.”

I stared at him for a beat, still waking up. My groggy mind was struggling to latch onto reality and dull routine after my adventurous dream where I’d been chased by pirates. “William, I’m sorry, but no. I’m just not in the mood. Later, yeah?”

Underwhelmed, he gazed back at me. “Fine.”

Surprising me, he removed his shirt and flung it onto the floor, as if to show me what I was missing out on. The view had me salivating while my heart jolted. I was positive his action had been deliberate. He wasn’t playing fair. For a moment, I regretted having told him of how attractive I found him to be, because he seemed determined to use it against me. His abs glistened with fresh sweat while he approached. After his fisted hands met with my mattress, he leaned forward to reach me, and I saw the muscles of his shoulders and biceps ripple, serving as a sore reminder of his tantalising masculinity. He was so bloody tempting.

He placed a chaste kiss to my mouth, and as he pulled away, he said, “Your loss.”

When he pushed away, I swallowed the drool in my mouth and stared after his beautiful backside. My fingers tingled at the sight, begging me to claw into the slabs of muscle on it. Ugh. That view was going to bother me all day, and I knew he’d done it on purpose. I was incurably susceptible to his seductiveness. Didn’t matter if my vagina was terribly sore. It still ached for his presence. Were his insatiable tendencies starting to rub off on me?

“Fine!” I groaned and dragged myself out of the bed to chase after him. I heard him chuckle from the hall, audibly pleased with himself.

“You won’t regret it,” he said when I saw him poke his head out the door of the bathroom. “I’ll be quick, but I won’t stop before you’ve come at least the once.”

I couldn’t help my giggle. “How generous of you.”

“Watching you come is one of my favourite pastimes, darling,” he purred and clasped my hand to drag me inside. After shutting the door behind me, he stared intensely into my eyes when he added, “But being inside of you even more so.”

I snickered while he tugged me toward the showers. “Good thing that’s mutual – having you within me, I mean.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” he cooed and released my hand. “Shall I undress myself, or would you rather have the honour?”

I leered at him and grabbed hold of his shorts. “Do you need ask?”

When we were dressing later, I feigned utter nonchalance as I grabbed a pair of black stockings from my closet, as well as a purple dress appropriate for work. Mentally, William appeared miles away, doing the buttons of his sleeves while he stood in front of my desk. Work must be on his mind. I had a seat on my bed in only my black lace lingerie, and while stealing glances at his dressing figure, slowly slid one stocking up my right calf. I’d reached my knee by the time he glimpsed in my direction.

The following scene was quite comical. After that initial glimpse, he looked back to the buttons of his white shirt as if he hadn’t seen a thing. Another split second past, his entire figure froze. Slowly, his head turned toward me to register reality. I pretended not to notice his gawk and continued to dress as if I was the most innocent creature on the planet.

“Cara,” he said, and his voice lacked any trace of emotion.

I didn’t look at him. “Yes?”

“What are you doing?”

“I’m getting dressed. What does it look like I’m doing?”

“It looks like you’re trying to kill me.” He sounded about as menacing as a predatory animal weighing whether to attack.

I couldn’t resist meeting his eyes now. The heat of them was scorching. He looked barely reined. Still, I pretended not to be affected. “Kill you? What – no. I’d never,” I teased and passed him a smirk.

From his clenched jaw, I could tell he was grinding his teeth together.

“I don’t deserve this,” he growled under his breath.

“Oh, yes you do,” I replied aloofly and got started on my left stocking. I was quicker with that one. “After what you made me wear yesterday, you really fucking do. You brought this upon yourself. You should think twice before you mess with me, William. I will have my revenge in the ways available to me.”

He actually sobbed, albeit tearlessly. “Cara, no. Please don’t. I’m sorry. It was only meant to be a joke. It was just a sweater. It’s not like I’m going to tell you what to wear, just please don’t wear that. I’m begging you. For my cock’s sake – my sanity’s sake.”

Amusing how he said that as though they were interlinked. I scoffed at him. “What sanity? You’ve never been sane.”

Stretching up, I pulled the dress over my head and smiled cheekily at him while I brushed it off. “Do you know what I love about this dress, Will?” I asked and turned my back to him. “When I bend over, even just a little, and lift it up like this,” I grabbed the hem of the somewhat loose skirt and raised it only a little while I bent over, “I leave just enough to the imagination.” I eyed him across my shoulder. A speechless William was a rare sight. He looked about to lunge for me.

Stretching up again, I faced him. “Enjoy your day, Will. I’ll make sure to pay you a few visits. Though, you may only look. Not touch.”

I heard an odd version of a whimper blending with a groan leap out of his mouth when I headed for the door to wake Jason. His footsteps charged after me, so I increased my pace, slightly apprehensive now. I’d nearly reached the door to Jason’s bedroom when he launched forward to wrap his arms around my waist.

Worried he was going to have his way with me again, I squeaked and writhed in his embrace. In turn, he was quick to cover my mouth with his hand.

“What are you doing?” he whispered, and from his tone, I realised he hadn’t intended to have sex with me at all. Since my confusion silenced me, he saw it safe to remove his hand.

“I’m going to wake Jason,” I said, baffled.

“Why?” he queried, light blue eyes flickering toward his door.

“Because he’s told me to wake him before I leave in the morning. He doesn’t want to ruin his sleeping routine over the holiday.”

“Isn’t Olivia there with him?” he whispered back. “She was completely off her face last we saw. She ought to get some rest, Cara.”

Flummoxed, I resorted to stare at him. The fact that he was so attentive toward Olivia wasn’t something I’d ever foreseen – not to this extent. “She’ll want to wake up, too,” I finally said, knowing full well she and Jason were quite alike when it came to that. “It’s a weekday.”

“I’m not sure I agree,” he argued quietly and stared at me for a beat. “Just let them have their peace, Cara.”

My eyebrows furrowed with my irritation. “Easy for you to say. You won’t be the target of their annoyance when they wake up far later than they expected. I will.” I turned for the door.

“Wait,” he ordered and shoved my hand away from the handle. “If we’re going to do this, allow me.”

Puzzled, I gazed up at his handsome profile and heard him clear his throat. As quietly as possible, he opened the door and peeked inside. The gap he created was so small that I was unable to see a thing, and since he seemed determined to block the view, part of me wondered if he was doing it on purpose, but before I could entertain the thought further, his chest expanded with his deep inhalation and he called, “Jason Night!”

For a second, I honestly thought John was present. It made me gasp, but it was muted out by the ensuing squeal of Jason. I’d never heard him so frightened before.

“Fuck!” Jason roared from within while William bent over to grab his knees while he laughed. I joined him a heartbeat later, overcome with severe amusement.

Seeing as William had abandoned it, the door slid further open, and the sight it revealed only made me laugh harder. Jason had actually jumped out of the bed while Olivia lay shocked amidst the tousled duvet, brown eyes wide as they stared at us.

“Seriously, Will! Would you stop doing that!? You’re going to give me a heart attack! For fuck’s sake – I thought you were Dad!” Jason chastised and irately waved his arms in the air.

“That was the point!” William replied high-pitched, and to my utter disbelief, I saw a tear of laughter roll down his cheek. “Ah, this gets me every time,” he continued and shook his head to himself through his fit.

Resembling a bull, Jason stampeded toward the door and slammed it shut in our faces. Turning toward each other, William and I resembled two young brats while we both cried of laughter.

“That was incredible! I had no idea you could do that,” I claimed overjoyed. It hadn’t before dawned on me that dating Jason’s brother had provided an irreplaceable chance at seeing sides of him I otherwise never would have.

When we managed to restore a portion of our composure, William stretched up and patted his belly.

“Ah,” he breathed satisfied. “I always used to do that when we were still living in the same house and I found him snoozing around the place. Never failed. Dad waking him up during his teenage years has traumatised him, and the sadist in me can’t resist triggering it. But he’s got himself to thank. If he’d woken up when he was supposed to in the mornings, he wouldn’t be liable to this.”

“Brilliant. That was just brilliant,” I replied through a chuckle and realised I’d have to check my make-up since I’d actually cried. “How’s my make-up?” I asked.

“I’m tempted to say that you don’t need it, because you truly don’t, but it’s fine,” he dryly said.

“Aw,” I uttered. “You can be surprisingly sweet, Will.”

He frowned at me. “I’m always sweet to you. Well, I try to be.”

“Try is the key word,” I teased. “I’m sorry to say it, but you’re not always sweet. You’re too vulgar and direct, but I forgive you for it, because I fancy you vulgar and direct. I quite like you just the way you are.”

He merely stared at me, seemingly moved. Curious. What did he think? Why else would I be here?

“What’s with your face?” I asked.

“What?” He frowned.

“You look funny. Did you expect anything else?”

“No, I’m just... That was sweet of you to say.”

I rolled my eyes at him and faced Jason’s door. “Jason, I’m sorry I laughed, but are you up?”

“Of course I’m up!” he snarled back. “I bloody thought it was Dad! How could you let him do that to me? The amount of adrenaline... Fuck you, Will! Go do one!”

William shook beside me with stifled laughter.

“Honestly,” Jason continued, “The two of you together is a lethal combination! I fear for humanity!”

“Olivia, are you okay?” I called and ignored Jason’s ridiculous comment. Like his brother, he could be a right diva, but only in the mornings, which was why I tended to make a point of waking him gently.

“Yeah,” she replied drowsily. “Nearly pissed myself, but I’m good. Thanks for waking me. I’ve got a lunch to make with Mum.”

“Are you free to hang out this evening?” I queried. After what had happened with Colin, I was keen to keep a strict eye on her, just to be sure she didn’t do anything stupid and self-destructive.

“Yeah.”

“Come over around six, then?”

“Sure.”

“Okay, see you then. Will and I are going to leave for work.”

“I hope you’ll have a shite day, Will!” Jason yelled.

“I’ll tell Dad you said hello,” William wittily replied, still amused, and tucked his hands in his pockets. Looking toward me, he said, “He loves me.”

I smirked. “Of course he does.”

He studied me for a beat then, seemingly intrigued. “You know, I’ve never asked, but have you got any siblings?”

I chuckled. “Yeah, a younger sister, Phoebe, but she lives in New York. Studies business at Columbia. She’s in her second year now. Only recently, she turned twenty-one. Big year over there. When she first arrived, she was gutted about the drinking age, but I gave her my ID. Don’t tell anyone I did that, or else I won’t be able to practice the law, seeing as it’s a criminal offence. Anyway, she was supposed to return for the summer, actually, but she recently got a yankee boyfriend over there, Chase, who wanted to take her on a road trip. They’re doing route sixty-six.”

His eyes widened somewhat. Clearly, this was surprising news. “Are you close?”

I cocked my head from side to side. “We’re super close, but we’ve got that sort of bond where we don’t need to speak very often.”

“Have you told her about me?” He looked charmingly hopeful.

I arched a brow at him, even if I was slightly amused. “I may have told her about you after our first encounter, yes, because you’re amazing in bed, but I haven’t spoken to her in about a month, so she has no idea we’ve reunited. Now that you mention it, what a story to tell. She’ll be gobsmacked. I should give her a bell.”

“What will you say?” he probed, grossly curious. When he leaned toward me, I leaned slightly backwards.

“Err, that we’re dating?”

He leaned away again and turned his profile to me. I wished he hadn’t done that, because I wanted to read the emotion of his eyes. “I’d like to meet her,” he said, but his tone was quiet.

“Sure. She’s coming over in August. If you’re still around by then, you’ll see your chance.”

When he faced me again, he looked so elated that I took a moment to appreciate it. It was blatant that the fact that I was willing to introduce him to a family member pleased him, and that filled me with glee. However, I had to admit that I was slightly surprised by how much it seemed to mean to him. Especially so soon. We’d hardly started dating, for crying out loud.

“You know I’m not going anywhere, Cara,” he reminded me firmly. My heart throbbed. He could never say that a time too many. “What’s she like? Anything like you?” he asked then. “Does Jason know her?”

Phoebe had surely piqued his interest. “She’s great. Very sweet, but quite introverted. Not shy, but reserved. She can be quite uncompromising when it comes to her values, though. She’s also very artistic? She likes to draw a lot. I’m sure she’ll adore you. She’s always appreciated authentic individuals. And yes, Jason does know her. Quite well, actually. Phoebe loves him, but then again, who doesn’t love your brother?”

He smiled lopsided. “Yes, I’ve always envied him for that. He’s good with people. Much better than I am.”

“Well, William...” I sighed. “You have a way of mattering deeply to those you do manage to charm. You’re the type one either hates or loves. And those who hate you simply don’t understand you. I wouldn’t care about it, if I were you.”

“Oh, I don’t,” he assured me, and his smile turned smug.

“You’re so unapologetically you,” I commented with a tilt of my head and resorted to admire him for a quick second. I couldn’t help the smitten smile on my face while I did, because I truly loved that part of him. It earned my respect.

“You’re not so different, you know,” he argued and withdrew his hand from his pocket to ruffle my hair.

“Now, why’d you have to do that? Now I’ve got to redo my ponytail.”

“Couldn’t resist.”

“Can you ever?”

“Oh, Cara, you’ve no idea how good I am at resistance.” His eyes were gleaming when he said it, and it made me frown.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“That it’s relative. Let’s get to work, or we’ll be late,” he muttered and turned on his heel.

“You don’t get to decide when a conversation is over,” I grumbled after him.

“Watch me.”

“Fuck you, Mr Ambiguous.” Mr Alpha.
