I stood quiet for a few seconds not knowing what to say. He was going to college states away and I was about to start my senior year. He needed to live his life and not be tied to a high school girl miles away.
“I don’t know what to say. Your one of my best friends Stephen. What if we try it and it doesn’t work, then what? What happens to our friendship?” I said pulling away from him.
Before he could respond a car pulled up and parked in my drive way. It was Trevor’s car. He turned the car off and got out.
I sucked in the breath that I was holding in and prepared myself for the shit storm that was about to go down.
Raven pulled up beside him and got out the car and ran over to me.
“I’m so sorry Sky. I couldn’t stop him from coming. I’ve been trying to call you, but you didn’t answer.”
Stephen pulled me behind him squaring up with Trevor.
“You don’t have to protect her from me.” He said fire in his eyes.
“I’ve known Sky since she was in grade school. You’re the only outsider here.” Trevor said with a frown.
“Do you think you know her better than me because you have known her all of five minutes? Do you know that her favorite color is blue but before that it was red. How about that she loves to read. Or that her favorite number is twenty-one. I have countless memories with her. Way more than you will ever have.”
“Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t it you who said you wanted her out of your life.” Stephen shot back.
Trevor flinched at his words.
“Or how about the fact that you picked your skank of a girlfriend over her.” Stephen said not letting up.
“Seeing you with him had me crazy with jealousy.” He said pointing at Stephen.
“I had way too much to drink that night and I said things that I will regret forever.” He said hurt crossing his beautiful face.
“I would really like to talk to you in private but regardless of who hears I going to say what I came here to say.”
“I refuse to be a coward and leave for college without telling you that I’ve loved you forever. I remember when I realized it. You had just turned thirteen and you and Raven were getting ready for the spring dance. You came down wearing that bright blue dress. I remember thinking that you looked beautiful. I thought how I had never noticed. From that day on I pinned for you in secret. It hurt me when you started dating Jason and I had to see you with him all the time.” He said sadness in his eyes.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” I asked coming out from behind Stephen.
“I knew that you didn’t see me that way. I was like a brother to you and it killed me. I tried to forget you and date other girls but all I could ever think about was you.” He said walking over to me.
Stephen pushed Trevor back. It was a warning to not get to close.
Trevor balled his hands into tight fists but said nothing.
“I don’t leave for a week. I hope that you decide to come see me before I go. I love you Sky.” He said with so much emotion and longing in his eyes.
Balls in your court sweetheart.” He said walking away.
“I can’t believe he finally admitted it to you.” Raven said looking happy for her brother.
I turned as Trevor was getting in his car and couldn’t pull my eyes from him. I watched him until he drove away.
“I better go, I have a flight to catch.” Stephen said walking to his car.
“Stephen, wait.” I yelled hurrying to catch up with him.
“Don’t,” he said before I could say anything.
“I knew that the fight for your heart was not going to be easy. I’m ok with that Sky. Let them bring their best. You know how to get a hold of me.” He said getting in his car and driving away.
“He didn’t look to happy.” Raven said.
“He’s my boyfriend Raven how do think he feels right now?” I said lying through my teeth.
If only she knew that it was all fake.
I laid in bed for hours’ sleep evading me. My thoughts went to Trevor and how it would be with him. Him and Stephen were polar opposites. What was I going to do?
*3 days later*
“Sky, someone’s here to see you.” My mom yelled from downstairs.
I pulled my hair into a ponytail and quickly came down wondering who it could be.
My mom pointed at the living room where a gorgeous blond girl was waiting for me.
I recognized her from the picture Stephen had in his phone. What was she doing here?
I sat on the couch across form her and smiled.
“What can I do for you?” I asked curiously.
“You can leave Stephen alone.” She said forcefully.
“Excuse me,” I said getting up.
“Do you know how long our parents have been arranging our marriage?” She yelled angrily.
“Of course, you don’t. Let me fill you in, years.”
I couldn’t believe that this girl had the nerve to come to my home to threaten me. We were about to sort this all out.
“Why don’t we see what Stephen thinks about your visit.” I said pulling my phone out and dialing his number. He answered on the second ring and I put the phone on speaker.
“I’ve been hoping to hear from you. How are you beautiful?” He asked sounding happy to hear my voice.
The blonde girl frowned anger marring her beautiful face.
“Do you remember that picture of that girl you said was shallow and spoiled?” I asked.
I knew that I was being petty, but I didn’t care. This girl had come to threaten me.
“Yes,” he said waiting for me to finish.
“Can you please explain why she’s sitting here in my living room? I have you on speaker.”
“She seems to think that you belong to her.” I said looking over at the girl.
“She’s insisting that I leave you alone.”
“Amber what the hell are you doing at my girlfriend’s house.” Stephen yelled anger in his voice.
“Letting her know that your mine.” She said calmly.
“Only I’m not yours and never will be,” he growled out.
“She’s poor Stephen, your parents would never let you have anything serious with her.” Amber said with a smirk.
“Are you fucking crazy. I already told you, my parents and yours that I’m never marrying you. No one chooses who I’m with, but me.” He yelled livid.
This girl was stopping at nothing to pull Stephen into a love less marriage and I was not going to make it easy for her. Her and her parents were after his billions it was obvious.
“I guess that’s it. There’s nothing left to say. He made his choice” I said walking to the door.
“You think your cute don’t you,” She said slapping me hard across my face hard.
“You’re a nobody, do you think someone like Stephen De La Cruz will honestly take you serious?” She said with a sadistic grin.
“He’s a billionaire for crying out loud.”
I raised my hand and threw a right hook hitting her in her perfect face knocking her to the ground.
“Well this nobody, just knocked you on your ass. Now get the hell out.”
“What’s going on over here? My mom asked coming around the corner.
“Just taking some trash out.” I said anger coursing through me.
Amber got up and walked to the door.
“This isn’t over.” She said as she walked out.
“What was that about?” My mom asked curiously.
“She’s not happy about Stephen and I dating.” I said.
“He’s good for you. Defend what you have. I like him.” She said patting my back and pulling me into a hug.
“Money doesn’t make her better than you Sky. Remember that.” She said heading back into the kitchen.
I walked back up to my room and closed the door behind me.
“What the hell was that about?” I yelled into the phone.
“She fricking slapped me. But I showed her my right hook.”
“Are you okay?” He asked worried.
“I’m fine my face is a little red but nothing I can’t handle. She may have a black eye though.” I laughed trying to calm myself down.
“I’m so sorry Sky.”
“Her parents see how serious I’m getting with you and they are finally taking what I told them seriously. I’ve been under a lot of pressure to marry her. I won’t lie, my parents really want me to marry her.” He said sounding tired.
“Are you only trying to be with me to keep her off your back?” I asked feeling hurt.
“The way I feel about you has nothing to do with her. I like you Sky. Do you know what it’s like to never know if someone likes you for you? Or if it’s my money they are after. People only want the status that being with me can bring them. But you,” he said taking a breath “never ask anything of me never expect anything from me.”
“Because of that I want to give you everything.” He said emotion in his voice.
“You could care less that I have money. You hate the attention being my fake girlfriend has brought you. I love that about you. You see me and nothing else.”
“Do you know how many people would jump at the chance to be my girlfriend? But not you. It’s been days and you still have not given me an answer. You’re not good for my ego.” He said with a chuckle.
“No one will ever be as perfect for me as you. So, I’m going to ask you again to please give me a chance to win your heart.” He said sounding determined.
I could not imagine what It was like to live the life he did. To have to marry without love was heartbreaking to me. I could be happy with him. I knew it. He was patient, loving and kind. He was everything that I wanted from a boyfriend.
My thoughts went to Trevor and those striking blue eyes. Out of Stephen and Trevor I was most afraid to be with Trevor.
I thought back to all the times he had been there for me. How many times he had wiped my tears away. I remembered to my first boyfriend Anthony and how he had been a jerk to me. Trevor had set him straight with an ass whopping. The thought of losing him had a tear falling from my face. If we dated and it didn’t work. I knew that he would never be okay with just being my friend because of how he felt about me. I couldn’t risk that.
I had already decided that I was not going to see him before he left. He needed to forget about me.
I closed my eyes and said the words that I knew would change my life forever.
“Okay,” I said before I changed my mind.
“Your saying yes,” Stephen said in disbelief.
“Would you rather me say no,” I replied.
“No way, no take backs.” He said with a laugh.
“I hope things don’t get weird.” I said a little worried.
“I’m still me.” He said sounding happy.
I already felt so at home in his arms. I wondered what a real kiss from him would be like.
“Are you sure that this is what you want? We can never go back from here.” I asked needing to know he was sure.
“I have never been so sure about anything. Once your mine Sky. I ’m never letting you go.” He said putting emphasis on never.
