Chapter 13

Having her in my arms felt so right. I knew that I should let go of her, but I just couldn’t. I picked her up and carried her over to my bed and put her down a little too quickly causing her to gasp in surprise.

I closed my eyes trying to calm myself. So many emotions were running through my body like an electric current with nowhere to go. My body was on fire everywhere her bare skin had touched when I had her in my arms. I needed to take a second to clear my head. I was on verge of losing my shit. She was nowhere ready to deal with how intense I could be.

How long had I dreamed of having her in my room like this?

Without thinking I kneeled in front of her and grabbed her hand and placed it over my heart.

“If only you knew how much being near you affects me.” I said meeting her eyes.

I wanted her to feel for herself how my heart raced when she was close. I needed her to know that what I was saying to her were more than just words.

What did Stephen have that I didn’t?

Before I could stop myself, I blurted out the one thing that I knew I shouldn’t ask but desperately wanted to hear the answer too.

“Why him and not me?” I asked looking up at her my heart about to beat out of my chest.

She fiddled with her phone for a few seconds before she met my eyes.

“It’s not a matter of choosing one or the other Trevor. When I got back I had no idea that things would go down the way they did. I had no clue that you felt the way you do about me. That day in the hospital when you confessed your feeling to me I was shocked.

Things between Stephen started as a way for him to protect me from Jason and then eventually you.” She said frowning.

“What would you have had me do? I had two crazy jealous physio’s looking for anyway to hurt me because their boyfriends had a thing for me. Tell me how was I supposed to defend myself? Stephen did his best to keep their focus off me. How could they be mad if I had a boyfriend, right? Wrong! You and Jason did not make it easy for me.”

The look of pain that crossed her face had my heart breaking. Jason and I had caused her a lot of pain and problems. She wore a black eye for weeks because Carrie couldn’t deal with how Jason still felt about her.

“Let’s turn the tables for a second. Tell me why you stayed with Destiny even after you confessed your feelings for me? Why string her along?” She asked making me feel like a complete asshole.

I had a perfectly satisfactory answer to her question. I was afraid of her rejecting me.

“I couldn’t get past the fact that you might not feel the same for me that I may lose your friendship. I’ve been in love with you for so long that I just wasn’t willing to risk it. I never meant to hurt you or cause Destiny to hate you. I ’m sorry Sky,” I said grabbing my desk chair and sitting across from her.

Her phone chose that moment to ring. She looked down at her phone and back up at me.

“It’s Stephen I really need to answer this.” She said walking across the room.

“I’m glad you made it safe. When are you coming back?” She said into the phone.

“I’m here with Trevor,” She said looking over at me.

“It’s a very long crazy story,” she said laughing.

From the looks of it Stephen was not the least bit worried that she was here with me. Did he honestly think that I was not a threat?

“Okay, I’ll ask mom and let you know.” She said ending her call.

“Sorry,” she said going and sitting back on my bed.

“Your apology meant a lot to me Trevor. Thank you for that. My feelings were very hurt that night. I couldn’t understand why you kept protecting Destiny when she was clearly being ugly. But nothing stung worse than you telling me that you didn’t want me in your life.”

“That night taught me something though. One, you have the ability to hurt me. Two, even if I’m not sure how I feel about you I know I feel something. Something has changed between us and it scares me.” She said not meeting my eyes.

“What are you saying?” I said turning her face to me.

“I don’t know.” She said so many emotions swirling in her eyes.

“If I have no chance of ever making you love me just tell me.” I said needing her to say anything but that.

I leaned in close and let my lips hover close to her lips and dared her to close the gap.

Like I had done to her a couple of months ago she crushed me by saying the words I had asked for.

What was there left to say. I moved away from her and walked over to my window not wanting her to see how hurt I was.

“Please try to understand where I’m coming from,” she said walking up behind me.

“You deserve so much more than I can give you. I’m with someone, Trevor. Believe me when I say anyone would be lucky to have you. I mean look at you.” She said waving her hand up and down.

“Are you saying I’m hot?” I asked with a grin.

“You know you are.” She said her cheeks turning pink.

I knew that this was hard for her, so I was going to let it go and give her space. I was going to respect that she was honorable enough to not go behind her boyfriend’s back. Those were the qualities I loved about her the most. She was loyal to a fault and Stephen was lucky to have her. I was not going to make things any harder on her.

“I guess you thinking I’m drop dead gorgeous will have to do for now.” I said meeting her eyes.

She laughed but didn’t disagree which made me extremely happy. I’m glad you came back Sky.” I said pulling her into a hug.

We had always had a good relationship. I was thankful that she was going to remain in my life even if it wasn’t the way I would have wanted. I was not willing to lose her.

“I’m glad I did too.” She said laying her head on my chest.

I knew that tomorrow would be another day but today right now I wanted to enjoy her being in my arms.

When she finally left I knew without a doubt that although I may move on with someone else she would always hold my heart.

I walked out of my hotel balcony and took a much-needed breath. I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t worried about Sky being alone with Trevor. They had history, but I trusted her and wanted her to know that.

I was going to take things slow with her. She was special, she was not like any girl I had dated before. It was refreshing to be with someone who could think on her own and not just agree with everything I said.

Sky’s face flashing across my screen pulled me out of my thoughts. I quickly answered her video call and smiled when her face appeared.

She had some kind of avocado mask on her face and her hair pulled into a messy bun on top of her head.

“Looking beautiful as ever sweetheart,” I said with a chuckle.

“Very funny Stephen.” She said sticking her tongue out at me.

“You just don’t know the crazy stunt Raven pulled tonight.” She said with a frown.

“Let me guess, it had to do with Trevor.” I said knowing I was right.

“She totally set me up. She got drunk I drove her home. When we got there, she refused to get out of the car. But that’s not all. She then opened her door and started singing at the top of her lungs. So, having no choice I went inside and had to wake Trevor up. Okay now here’s the kicker as soon as Trevor came out Raven gets out of the car and walks inside.” She said throwing her hands in the air dramatically.

“Did your conversation with him go that bad?” I asked curious.

“Actually, it went a lot better than I thought it would.” She said getting up from her bed.

“Hold on, “She yelled sounding far away

Her face appeared again minus the avocado mask.

“Better?” She said pointing at her bare face.

“I think I liked you better the other way.” I said with a grin.

“Ha-ha. Just because you have perfect everything does not mean the rest of us are as blessed.”

“Perfect, huh?” I said meeting her eyes.

She just smiled and looked away.

“I’m glad that you got things worked out with Trevor.” I said changing the subject. I knew that things were going to be a little different at first. I was just happy that she was even giving us a chance at all.

“So am I. Being totally honest I was afraid to go see him before he left. But when I saw him tonight I was glad that I did. We needed to have the conversation that we had.”

She paused for a second before she continued. “I feel something for him, Stephen.” She said

My heart dropped and dread spread through my body. It couldn’t be over already. I thought feeling crushed.

“Are you breaking up with me?”

“What?! No! I would never do something like that to you. You asked me for a chance to win my heart and I’m going to give it to you. I just wanted you to know. I don’t want secretes between us.” She said looking at me in a way I had never seen her look at me before.

Relief spread through me. I felt like a man that had been drowning and plucked from the water.

“Okay,” I said with a grin.

She truly was one of a kind. Both Jason and Trevor had had their chance with her and blew it. It was my turn. I was going into war for her heart and there was no place I would rather be.
