Chapter 25

Chase didn’t know what time it was, it was pouring rain and grumbling thunder as he ran across the field. Practise was over for hours but Chase had to run off his thoughts before he could leave, he needed an answer to all this.

He was surprised when Scott had called him over during practise, both of them receiving the stink eye from coach. He could still hear Scott speak, making him try to bury his demons deeper and quicker.

“I owe you an apology. I should have never came between you and Melanie.” Scott said as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“You didn’t deserve any of the blame, I know you would protect her just like I know you would have protected Lilly if you had any say in it.”

Lightning struck beside him as he run faster, Scott’s words still echoing.

“You have to fight for her Chase. Fight for her because she thinks she’s not worth it to you and if there’s one girl left on this planet worth fighting for it is without a doubt her.”

Another lighting struck on the other side of him as he turned, Scott’s word getting louder.

“You only get love once, something like that doesn’t happen again and you’re fucking lucky if it ever happens to you. I would fight my fingers to the bone if it was Lilly. ”

Chase ran full speed to the other side of the field.

“Fight for her, love her, give her the world. I promise I won’t stand in your way. Prove my bitter side wrong. Show me that it really is my broken heart looking for someone to blame and not you who’s the dick.”

Chase came to a screeching stop as he saw a figure standing a few feet away from him, he knew instantly who the small figure was and rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn’t imagining things. She walked closer to him and as lighting stroke he could see Melanie was crying.

His heart broke at the expression she held and before he could stop his limbs he had her in his arms.

She pushed him away immediately and he felt his heart break “What did you say to him?” She looked up at him with angry eyes and his brows furrowed together in confusion.

“What did you say to Scott, Chase? What happened when he left here? I know he was here, Ricky told me!” She shouted at him so she could be heard above the rain.

“I didn’t say anything Melanie! He came to talk to me to fight for you, to tell me what I already knew! He told me he wouldn’t stand in my way to win you back.” He had raised his voice as he spoke so she could hear him.

Melanie’s body gave in as she gave a sob and Chase was in front of her in seconds, cradling her to him as she cried.

“Melanie what’s going on? Baby girl please talk to me…” Chase spoke as she grabbed his jersey in a tight fist, sobs racking through her body.

Chase picked her up bridal style and walked to the locker rooms, she couldn’t stop crying and he felt his heart tear apart. Chase vowed to never let anything hurt her like this again, not if he could help it.

“Scotty is gone Chase…” Melanie whispered he set her down “Scott's heart... he's gone.”
