Today we had a huge game against Westbrook’s Falcons, and I was really excited to see Dylan and his brothers play. They had a family football ritual that they did before every game, so Dylan was going to leave straight after school. While he did that, I figure Kayden, and I could spend some time together and then we could all come back to my house for dinner. Around lunchtime, the boys found me, and we walked to the cafeteria together. I decided that now was as good as ever to invite them over.
“Hey, would you guys want to come over for dinner later?” I asked
They both paused before turning to give each other a high-five.
“What time?” Kayden asked.
“Well, we have a football game later that Dylan’s gotta prep for, so I figured after we win we could celebrate and just eat dinner after the game. Sound good?”
“What makes you so sure we’ll win,” Kayden questioned.
I scoffed, “The Jaguars haven’t lost a single game since Dylan, and his brothers joined the team.”
Dylan grinned smugly before slinging his arm around my shoulders. I giggled and dragged them both towards the café. Oooh! They have baked mac and cheese today! I grabbed a tray of cheesy goodness and snatched up a peach mango Arizona. After lunch, I told Dylan I’d meet him in the gym and headed to the girl’s locker room when a hand grabbed mine. I swiveled around to see that the hand was attached to Emmett. I raised my eyebrow.
“Is there a reason for why you’re touching me?”
Emmett sighed. “Do you think we can talk for a moment?”
Now I was upset. We’ve had so many chances to talk, and he always fucked it up by bringing up sex or Dylan. Why is it that when I’m finally content with not having him in my life, he’s fucking ready to talk to me.
“What the hell could you possibly have to say to me?!”
Emmett sighed again, “Please?”
I blew out a breath and nodded my head. I guess I can be a big girl and at least listen to what he has to say.
“Make it fast,” I said following him to the quad.
I leaned against my locker and watched as Dylan and Kayden hovered over Vanessa. They were practically attached to her hip, and I knew I had to make my move soon. Besides, where the hell did Kayden even pop out from? I have trouble just getting Vanessa to look at me; granted I deserved it, but as soon as he gets here, he’s in Nessa’s good graces. I stopped Nessa before she entered the girl’s locker room and grabbed her hand. The look she gave me was icy enough to freeze your heart; how did things change this drastically?
Those pretty green eyes of hers used to stare up at me with so much love, thinking about it made my heart hurt. I shook my head; I wasn’t going to give up. Nessa was still mine; I just had to remind her of that. It took a little pleading, but I finally got her to talk to me; which is more than I’ve gotten her to do in a while.
As we reached the quad, the cool breeze wrapped around us as it rustled the trees and grass. It carried an earthy scent to it that left me in a comfortable peace. We were silent as we took our seats on the hard bench; that was already working on numbing my ass. I was the first to break the silence.
“So, what did you want to talk about?” I asked turning towards him
“Look, I know we’ve been in a tough spot lately, but I want to end this little break that we’re on. I’m tired of seeing you all over guys.”
“Break? What break? Wasn’t it clear that we were over? I don’t want Bianca’s sloppy seconds. Not to mention it sounds like you’re calling me a slut; who are these guys I’m hanging all over?”
“Oh come on, Vanessa, don’t give me that bullshit! Kayden and Dylan follow you around like lost puppies. It didn’t take you any time at all to drop me!”
“News flash, Emmett, you’re not the victim here! Instead of coming to me and talking our relationship out, you went straight to Bianca!”
“I went to her for the same reason I started fucking her behind your back! Maybe if you gave out; even if it were just a little we wouldn’t be in this position!” Emmett roared
I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked to the clouds. I knew he had been with her, but it still hurt to hear it. I thought I would have been enough. Apparently, that wasn’t the case. The rage set in and coursed through my veins, as did a flow of magic. It was electrifying, and it filled me with a sense of pleasure as I let my rage fuel the magic inside of me, but not only was their rage I was so hurt.
Gone was the considerably beautiful day, as the dark clouds filled the sky. The air thumped around us as if it had a beating heart, and sent trees swaying uncontrollably. Lightning shot out in blindingly white jags that forked and branched off of the main strike. The strike left a burning smell as it lashed against a tree to the left of us, startling Emmett.
I was too far gone in the magic to pay attention to Emmett’s screams. I was simply too fascinated by what was unfolding before me. Was I really doing this? It still seemed impossible. I smiled as I coaxed the air into blowing a bit harder and the water to come and play with its translucent raindrops. My smile deepened as they whispered to me excitedly.
“Vanessa, move! You’ll get hurt!” I heard Emmett yell faintly.
I chuckled they wouldn’t hurt me; they were having too much fun. Thunder boomed in the distance that caused an odd vibration in the air. The vibration rattled my bones and sent me sprawled across the ground. The minute my body made an impact with the ground I heard my name being called
“Vanessa!” It sounded like Dylan and Kayden but with all the background noise; it was hard to tell.
And then the darkness consumed me.
I woke up to Kayden and Dylan hovering over me; worry etched into their faces.
“What the hell happened out there, Nessa?” Dylan asked, scanning my body for any injuries.
“I don’t even know,” I said, placing my hand over my forehead.
There was no way I could tell them I let my magic run wild. Not that I knew what happened entirely, myself.
“Are you sure you’re okay? Are you going to be up to going to the game and dinner?” Kayden asked.
“I feel a lot better already. I’ll be fine.”
Dylan dropped us off at my house and hesitated before leaving.
I poked my head through the window. “What’s wrong?”
Dylan scrunched his nose. “I can’t believe I actually drove him to your house.”
I chuckled, and Dylan pouted. This only fueled my laughter as I leaned in and swiped at his bottom lip.
“What’s with that face?”
“I’m jealous!” Dylan whined.
He was so fucking cute sometimes.
Dylan got an impatient text from Rafe, and I blew him a kiss as he drove off.
I turned towards Kellan. “So, we have two options: We can go to MainLevel so you can get a chance to explore the rest of the mall or we can just chill at the house.”
Kayden smirked and slinked his arms around my waist. “I’d much rather explore your house; your bedroom to be more specific.”
I narrowed my eyes and pointed at him. “Behave.”
Kayden donned a boyish grin and saluted me, “Yes, ma’am.”
I shook my head, amused. Kayden actually wasn’t all that impressed with MainLevel. We spent most of the time with me window shopping and him offering to buy me stuff. My stomach growled, and I frowned.
“I’m hungry,” I said, turning to Kayden.
“We can find a light snack to eat.”
I glanced around and gasped when I saw it.
“Auntie Anne’s! I want pretzel bites and a lemonade.”
Kayden shook his head at my excitement. Kayden offered to pay, and this time I didn’t refuse.
When we brought our food to the table, I wasted no time digging in. I dipped one of my bites into the gooey nacho cheese and quickly popped it into my mouth. After we finished eating, we headed back to the house, and I lead Kayden to my room. I watched as Kayden assessed my room
“I would be able to tell that this was your room even if you didn’t show it to me. It feels like you.” He said as he sat on my bed.
I smiled brightly at him. That had been my intention when I decorated my room. I took a few tries to get it right, but I did. I snapped out of my thoughts when I felt Kayden staring at me intensely.
He gestured for me to come to him, and I stepped forward until I was between his legs. He reached up and gripped my chin.
My heart stuttered, and I gasped when he swiftly sat me on his lap. He pressed feather-like kisses all over my face, and I huffed in frustration when he paused at my lips.
Kayden let out a husky chuckle. “Does that mean I get to misbehave now?”
I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I guess it couldn’t hurt to misbehave a little.”
I shivered when he gripped my hips, and his fingers brushed my skin. Kayden smirked before kissing me fiercely. I was on fire. Heat coursed through me as I returned the kiss with as much ferocity as he had. He trailed kisses down my neck and grazed the tender flesh with his teeth. A spark shot through me and I pulled his face to me and nipped at his bottom lip before kissing him. Kayden groaned as I tugged on his hair and quickly took over the kiss. This was intoxicating; he was intoxicating. I yelped when he flipped me onto the bed. I moaned as Kayden trailed kisses down the valley of my breast. He smiled against my skin. He was getting ready to reposition us when my phone rung. He groaned and ran a hand through his hair.
“Do you have to answer?”
I let out a breathless laugh and lifted my hips up so I could fish out my phone. I saw that it was Sage and answered.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Just checking what time you were coming to the game. We were getting ready to head out.”
I checked my phone and was shocked to see how much time had passed. Sage and I spent some time talking. My hips jerked when Kayden trailed his fingers across my waist. I gave him a warning glance before returning to my conversation. He smiled deviously before pushing my shirt up. My eyes widened as I tried to use my free hand to push it back. He shook his head disapprovingly before pinning my hand to the bed. He dipped his head low and placed kisses over my stomach. I let out a sigh. He was distracting me; I could barely keep up with what Sage was saying. I tugged on his hair as a warning, but that only seemed to spur him on. I squirmed and tried to get away from Kayden. I yelped when he nipped at my side.
“You okay?” Sage asked.
I cleared my throat, “Yeah, I just didn’t realize how late it was. I still have to get ready. You mind saving Kayden and me a seat?”
“Sure. Text me when you get there.”
I quickly hung up and glared at Kayden. He shrugged and looked at me, innocently.
“You said I could misbehave a little.”
As much as I tried not to a smile broke out on my face. After I changed, we made our way to the game. You could feel the excitement in the air as soon as we arrived. I sent Sage a text, and she told me where they were. I instantly spotted Dylan’s sister and marched up the bleachers. I smiled when I saw Nyla in Ava’s lap. I squealed and reached for her. My heart melted when she came to me. She was such a doll baby! I nudged Kayden when I saw his brother and sisters at the bottom of the bleacher’s.
He stood up. “We’re up here.”
I cocked an eyebrow at him. There was no way that they had heard him over all the excitement and went to tell him so until they began making their way to us. I tilted my head in confusion before shrugging. They greeted everyone and sat in front of Kayden and I. Leila was fashionably late but managed to find us all anyway.
I was in the middle of talking Levi when the crowd erupted in cheers. I didn’t even have to look to know that the Jaguars had stepped onto the stadium. The game was intense. I stared at the field with laser focus, and I was almost positive that I was going to lose my voice with all the screaming I was doing. I don’t remember being this pumped for a game when I went to see Emmett play previously.
We all stood up and cheered as Tony made the final Touchdown. We had won 24-20. Dylan’s brothers felt like big brother’s to me so I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Honestly once Kayden’s family had warmed up to Dylan’s and vice-versa, it felt like we were melding into one big family and I loved it.
We all wait for the boys to change before we surrounded them and congratulated them. I pecked Dylan’s cheek.
“I was really proud of you out there.”
Tony threw his arm up. “I was the one who made the touchdown!”
I giggled and gave Tony a peck on the cheek. Rafe opened his mouth, and I pecked him before he could even say anything.
We all laughed, and Leila stepped up to Rafe. Leila gripped the collar of his shirt and tugged him down to her.
“Lucky you, you get two kisses,” Leila said as she brought her lips to his.
We all whooped as they continued to kiss. When they broke apart, Rafe looked at her in a daze. I shook my head as the boys teased him about being whipped. As they continued to tease him, I bumped Leila with my hip.
“You put hearts in that mans eyes, girl.”
Leila giggled. “I’ve wanted to do that for a while.”
My attention had turned to Rafe, who had finally had enough and pointed at Dylan and Kayden.
“You two can’t talk about being whipped! Vanessa’s got you both wrapped around her fingers.”
I felt heat rush to my cheeks but smiled when the boys couldn’t deny his words.
“He has a point.” Levi and Avery said at the same time.
I giggled and turned back to Leila.
“Are you coming back to the house with us?” she asked
I cocked my head to the side. “Pretty sure that was an invite for Leila only. The boys are having dinner with my parents and me.”
“Oh shit, they’re meeting the parents!”
I giggled and nodded. Leila paused, and her cheeks turned pink.
“Wait, does that mean I’ll be alone with Rafe?”
I hummed. “I can practically see all the dirty thoughts running through your head right now.”
Leila chuckled and lightly punched my shoulder. “Shut up.”
Dylan and Kayden glared at them before shrugging. After we all talked some more Dylan threw his car keys to Rafe, and we parted ways with everyone.
“I see you’re more comfortable separating from your car,” I commented as I drove home.
Dylan shrugged with a slight smile on his face. “As of right now, Rafe is the only one allowed to drive my car.”
I laughed and shook my head. The streets blurred past us and left me deep in thought. When we reached my house, no one made any moves to get out
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“Well, this dinner is with your parents, right?” Kayden asked.
“Is that a problem?”
I rolled my bottom lip into my mouth. Were they starting to have second thoughts?
“What if they don’t like us?” Dylan asked.
I burst into laughter. Pfft. That was such a silly thing to be worried about.
“Don’t worry about it; they’ll love you both,” I said, slipping out of the car.
Mmmh... As soon as I opened the door, I could smell Mama’s cooking. I’m pretty sure I smell eggplant parmesan.
“Mama, Papa, I brought friends over for dinner!” I called out.
“Bring them on in!” my mom called back.
When we walked into the dining room; which was connected to the kitchen; my dad narrowed his eyes at the boys. I bent down to kiss him on the cheek and whispered to him
“Papa, be nice, please.”
Dad feigned innocence; then he smirked and nodded silently.
“This is Kayden and Dylan,” I said, introducing them.
My dad raised his eyebrows but didn’t say anything. I hung my coat up before taking my seat. The boys both greeted my parents and took seats on either side of me. Well, so far, so good. I can’t guarantee that my dad was going to behave all night.
“Bebé, están calientes! Usted no me dijiste que estabas rodeado de ojos dulces! ¿Los has besado ya? ” (Baby, they’re hot! You did not tell me you were surrounded by eye-candy! Have you kissed them yet?) my mom asked.
“Mama para!” (Mama, stop!“) I said blushing. My mother, oddly enough, didn’t have any qualms about me kissing the guys. My mom clicked her tongue impatiently.
“Bueno, ¿verdad?” (Well, have you?)
I sighed. “Sí,” I said glancing at Dylan and Kayden.
My mom sent a wink my way causing me to blush harder.
“Do they do this a lot?” I heard Dylan ask my dad.
“You get used to it.” My dad replied with a shrug.
Dinner went on with light conversation. My dad was hurling questions at Dylan and Kayden.
“Do you know what college you want to get into?”
Both boys stated that they weren’t positive, but were keeping an open mind for other options.
“What about work?”
They both planned to work under their fathers. Kayden would start getting ready to take over his father’s position as CEO of his company. Dylan would take over his father’s car repair shop and help his mother book talent for her art exhibits.
“Babe, stop badgering them with questions.” My mom said, nudging my dad.
“Okay, one more question.”
“Do either of you have the intentions of hurting my daughter?”
I sighed. I knew this was coming sooner or later.
“Sir, we would never do anything to hurt Vanessa,” Kayden replied, and Dylan nodded in agreement.
“Heard that one before.” My dad muttered.
“Yea, well Emmett was a piece of shit.” Dylan and Kayden stated casually.
They whipped their heads around to face each other and stared wide-eyed, but before they could stutter out an apology, my dad roared out a throaty laugh.
“I like you guys already.”
The table erupted in laughter as they let out a relieved sigh. I was glad that my dad approved of them both and that my parent’s approval meant so much to them.
After dinner, I walked Kayden and Dylan to the door. They both wrapped me in tight hugs before saying goodbye. I smiled. Tonight had been successful. I walked into the living room and plopped onto the couch next to my dad. Once I sat next to him, I let the memories of what happened earlier flood over me.
“Okay, what’s wrong?”
“Daddy, I screwed up.” My voice cracked.
My dad pulled me into a hug, and the tears started to flow. This was the first time that I was scared of the concept of magic. What would I have done if I had hurt someone? What I had done was so reckless, and I didn’t know what to do about.
After telling dad what happened, my tears slowed as my dad nodded in understanding.
“We’ll start training your control of magic.”
I sighed in relief and fell into a deep sleep in my father’s arms
