Chapter 20

Aiden

I sighed as I continued to pace. Chris was currently looking at me with concern.

“I didn’t mean to worry you, but you should know that it’s a possibility that they might go for your daughter.”

“Why, damnit?!”

Chris sighed, “You know that I don’t have to explain that to you. Your bloodline consists of the most powerful witches ever known. Our enemies, as well as some of our allies, would want that power.”

“Then, why not me?! I roared

“Vanessa is younger; they consider her easier to manipulate. You shouldn’t worry just yet; it could be another few years before they even take notice of her.”

I continued pacing, as I got lost in thought. Astrazia was an organization of pseudo witches. They viciously killed witches and then extracted their magic out of their body. The theory of extracting magic and implanting it into your own essence was originally made by a human. Of course, humans didn’t know what they were doing, but the supernaturals did. Both humans and supernaturals soon banded together and formed an organization called Astrazia. No one’s heard from then in over a century, and all of a sudden when Vanessa starts practicing magic, they resurface. I wanted to believe that they weren’t after my baby girl, but I had to prepare for the worst.

When I got home, I found Vanessa on the couch and pulled her up into a hug.

“Whoa, everything okay, dad?”

“Everything’s fine, baby.”

I smiled down at her and ruffled her hair. She was strong; if the time comes, then she would get through this. I believed that with every fiber of my being. She is her father’s daughter, after all.

Vanessa

I had just finished some errands when I crashed into another body.

“Shit, I’m sorry.” A deep voice apologized.

I looked up to see an incredibly gorgeous guy.

“Hey, I’m James.”

“Vanessa. I’m sorry for bumping into you.”

“Don’t worry about it. It was my fault anyway; texting while walking,” he said, waving his phone around.

We ended up having a long conversation, longer than I expected anyway. James was new in town, and like me was also running errands for his mom.

“It was nice meeting you, but I have to go now.”

“Really? I’d like to talk to you some more.”

James was definitely charming, but he was starting to give off creeper vibes. I slowly started backing away.

“I don’t think you understand. I need you,” he said as he snaked his arms around me.

If I were any other girl, I probably would have melted on the spot. His voice was low and seductive, and his eyes held the right amount of affection. He was already getting creeper stats and him groping me didn’t help in the slightest. I struggled and thrashed against him, but he had a vice-like grip on me that was impossible for me to break free. I had to think. Whatever this loser wanted from me, he sure as hell isn’t going to get it. When he shoved his tongue in my mouth, I wracked my brain for a spell- any spell that could help me. And then it came to me.

‘Respiracion Electica’

Breathe of electricity was the perfect spell for this asshole. As soon as I thought the spell a shot of mild electricity shot out of my mouth and into his; completely stunning him. I had a feeling he would follow me so as soon as I was able, I hauled ass. I asked water to cloak me in mist; which was perfect for a dreary day like this. I sighed in relief when I finally made it home. I waited for my heartbeat to slow down before collapsing on the floor. I decided not to tell anyone about my earlier encounter. Dad was already seemed to be stressed out. Plus, I didn’t need the guys in a rage over some guy I’ll probably never see again.

James

I sighed. Astrazia held three meetings in one week on the same exact bullshit. My job was to locate and retrieve Vanessa. I wasn’t exactly sure why everyone was so persistent about getting her, but if she could give me the power that I wanted, then I was more than willing to do the job. Or at least that was what I thought until I had met the bitch. Now I admit that I could’ve been a hell of a lot smoother, but the bitch is fucking crazy! I didn’t have time to play romantic games. Ailes pretends to give his full support, but I know the minute you’re not useful he throws you right out. Sure things got out of hand, and I got a bit aggressive, but that doesn’t mean you fucking electrocute somebody! That shit hurt like a bitch and if the voltage were any higher, I probably would have been dead. I was lucky none of my nerves were damaged. Hell! I was bloody lucky I only got minor burns. I may be slightly more agile than the average human, but that’s all I am - human.

I pushed open the heavy metal doors I guess you could call Astrazia’s headquarters. Everyone stopped to stare at me as Ailes; the leader approached me.

“Did you make any progress?”

“No.”

Ailes pursed his lips before they settled into a frown.

“Well, I suppose there’s always tomorrow.” Ailes sighed, clapping my back.

“No.”

“No?”

“I quit.”

Sure I wanted power, but I wasn’t going to kill myself over a power that wasn’t even guaranteed. They were only basing all of this on theories and stories passed down. And even if it was true and people were able to transfer others magic into them, then what’s to say Ailes won’t take all that power for himself. If I were supernatural, my answer probably would have been different. I could be a bit reckless with my life and not actually send myself to an early grave, but once again, I was human.

Ailes nodded in what I thought was understanding.

“Very well, then.”

I turned around to walk out. What I didn’t expect was for a strazian styled dagger to pierce my heart from behind. Well, isn’t this a bitch? Why didn’t I think of the consequences of walking away? I landed on the floor with a thud, and no one even made a move to help me. This was how scared of Ailes they were, either that or how much they really didn’t give a fuck about me. I breathed out a ragged breath, my blood forming a puddle beneath me. I really hope Vanessa and whoever was in her corner kills these bastards. That was my last solid thought before I faded.

Vanessa

All of us were excited. Our whole year was throwing a party. The best part was that all of the younger teachers were chaperoning, so we had a bit more freedom in the planning. We were all sort of leading towards a Hollywood theme, and that was perfectly fine with me. The girls and I decided that this was a party that we weren’t going to plan. Of course, Chloe was having a fit, she, like the rest of us, wanted the party to be epic. Luckily Callie and Sarah were in charge, and we all knew they were going to be party planners in the near future. They were organizing it so that we would have a picnic the day before and we would all bring something to eat and chill so those who weren’t too fond of the Hollywood theme could still come out and have some fun. Leila was bringing finger sandwiches, and I was bringing two liters of soda and plastic cups. I had no idea what the others were bringing, but I was sure that it would be store brought.

The set up for the picnic was a success. We got a secluded area at Kenathan Park, and it was absolutely beautiful. It was incredibly peaceful and compelling scenery. It was nice talking to everyone; especially those you started to drift away from since starting high school. The only thing I could even complain about would be Bianca glaring at me the whole entire time. Talk about uncomfortable.

Zion

’Zion, you’re up!” Ailes called up to me.

I smiled. This was going to be a piece of cake. I already did my research. I was going to use the person that hates her the most to kill her. Bianca. Not that I actually need her, she would have minor tasks that would otherwise seem troublesome to me. That’s precisely why James got himself killed, he went in blind, and quit when things got tough.

I guess I could only judge so much considering he was human. I, on the other hand, was a shape-shifter and had more durability. Plus I had a bigger motivation for this power. My parents laid their lives and souls on the line for this organization, and I was going to finish what they started. Apparently, today was the day of their little picnic, which was a perfect opportunity for me. It gave me direct access to both Vanessa and Bianca.

When I arrived at the park, I felt a spark of jealousy. I never had time to do stuff like this, and it looked like they were having fun. It seems like I forgot what it even means to have fun. It wasn’t too hard finding Bianca, she was the only one burning holes into the back of Vanessa’s head. I was confident in my charm and looks; I was positive I would catch her attention.

“So, you don’t like her either, huh?” I asked after approaching her.

Bianca snorted. Not the most attractive thing in the world, by the way.

“That’s an understatement. I hate the bitch.

Bianca looks me up and down, and I can tell she’s instantly attracted to me.

“What’s your beef with her?”

“She cheated on me twice.”

It’s a perfect reason to hate her, and it was simple.

“So, she isn’t the saint everyone thinks she is, huh.”

Bianca smirked, and I took a step towards her.

“This may be a bit forward, but how about we work together?”

“Work together?”

“To make Vanessa miserable.”

I flashed her a charming smile, and I knew that I had her.

“I think that’s a great idea.”

“My name is Bianca, and you?”

“Zion.”

“Cute, I like it.”

If this all weren’t an act, I would have rolled my eyes. Who cares what you think? This was much easier than I thought it would be.

Vanessa

Today was the day! Leila had on a cute grey knee-length dress that hung off her shoulders, and I wore a black one-shoulder dress that had a slit on the left side. The rest of the gang met us at the house so we could head out. Everyone looked spectacular. The girls were dazzling, and the guys were dashing. We were taking Kayden’s hummer and my dad’s SUV. It was about the only way we were all going to fit without taking three cars.

I was seriously impressed when we entered the school gym. I t was completely transformed. Dylan and Kayden wrapped their arms around my waist.

“You look beautiful,” Dylan whispered.

“Absolutely stunning.” Kayden threw in.

They were seriously going to inflate my ego with all their praise. Not that I mind. What girl doesn’t want to be told she’s beautiful?

Callie and Sarah bounded over to our group, overflowing with energy. Callie squealed, effectively damaging my eardrum.

“We have to take pictures of all of you. You guys are totally going to be on the cover of the yearbook and probably the school paper!”

“Why us?”

Was I the only confused one?

“Why? Why not? You guys look like a bunch of demigods and goddesses!”

Leila and I giggled. “You’re definitely exaggerating,” Leila said.

“Callie has a knack for exaggerating things, but she’s right, you guys do look otherworldly.”

We all chuckled at that and gave them our thanks. We let them snap a couple of photos before heading to the dance floor. The party was definitely a huge success. Once we started dancing, it was as if we couldn’t stop. Leila suddenly tugged on my arm

“Can we please take a break?”

I giggled and let her drag us to an empty table.

“Ugh, my feet are killing me.”

“That’s what you get for buying the highest heels you could find!” I laughed

“Mmmh, don’t laugh at my pain.” Leila groaned.

I looked around the room and smiled, everyone was having a great time. But that was to be expected when Sarah and Callie stepped up to the plate. But what I did not expect was to see Emmett here with someone other than Bianca. He currently had a redhead clinging to his arm, and he looked like he was going to die of boredom. I wonder what happened to Bianca. I highly doubt that she would let anyone else sink their claws into Emmett. I shook my head. Their drama wasn’t any of my concern. It had absolutely nothing to do with me. I turned my attention back to Leila and smiled. Rafe was at her side in a flash. I was glad Leila finally found someone to dote on her; she deserved it.

I felt a flash of annoyance when a shadow loomed over me. I cocked my head to the side to find that it was none other than Bianca, but what caught my attention was the guy next to her. He had raven black hair, mocha skin, and eyes just as black as his hair, if not darker. How Bianca could even stand to be beside him was beyond me, his aura oozed out something ominous. It was like tendrils of darkness kept him caged, but there was no key. He seemed to have drowned himself in darkness. He was dangerous, and it rolled off him in currents. It was overwhelming, and once that current pulled you in; it could leave you fighting against your own paranoia and fears. I couldn’t move as my eyes stayed trained on him.

Bianca’s annoying wailing brought me back to reality. I was never more grateful for her nasal-like voice in my life. I guess Kayden and Dylan noticed my distress and were now standing at my side.

“Back off!” Dylan snarled.

Bianca held her hands up in shock before smirking.

“I just wanted your precious little bitch to know that she’ll get what’s coming to her.”

What the hell?!

“Was that a threat?” I asked, stepping up.

Bianca looked a little panicked but held her ground.

“More like a promise, princess.”

If she wanted to play, then we could play. I was getting really tired of her. I didn’t see the point in anything she did anymore. Why was she fighting? For Emmett? What sense did it make to fight over something I didn’t even want anymore? I refuse to let her stand here and threaten me, though. I was getting ready to launch myself at her when Kayden and Dylan hauled me away. I struggled out of their grasp and sat at one of the empty tables. Mason and Noah plopped down next to me

“You good?” Noah asked

I let out a sigh and nodded.

“Yea, I’m good.”

Mason smiled “Then come dance with us, beautiful.”

I giggled and followed them to the dance floor. Kayden strode over to us after a while.

“Are my idiot brothers showing you a good time?”

“Yes, yes, they are. They were perfect gentlemen.”

I laughed when Kayden made a displeased sound and Mason smirked.

“Dear brother, why on earth do you seem so irritated? Are you coming down with a nasty case of jealousy?”

“While I do admit that you look rather dashing tonight, green is just not your color, brother.” Noah chimed in.

“Yeah? Well, how about I paint your faces red, little brother?”

I laughed and wrapped my arms around Kayden’s neck.

“They were only teasing, Kayden. Leave them alone.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the boys sticking their tongues out, and Kayden rolled his eyes. I giggled. They were so silly.

“Of course you stick up for them.”

“Oh, stop pouting.”

Kayden kissed me on the cheek, and we headed back towards our group and danced the night away.

Bianca

When Zion asked, I nearly melted. He was so sexy, and I was dying to see him in a suit. I looked in the mirror and smiled. Everything was perfect from my smokey-eyed makeup to my silver dress decked in in gems, to my silver strapped shoes. Zion was an absolute gentleman when he picked me up.

“You look beautiful.”

I blushed for the first time in a while.

“You’re looking pretty sexy yourself.”

I was completely irritated that he, just like Emmett, immediately found Vanessa in the room. He kept his eyes on her at all times, and I was ready to throw a fit. I stopped myself from getting jealous when I remembered why we were together in the first place. He hated her just as much as I did. I glanced around and saw Emmett with some trashy redhead. He was obviously bored. I felt a smile creep on to my face; soon enough, he would be mine.

I made my way over to Vanessa and dragged Zion with me. Vanessa merely glanced at me before turning her full attention to Zion. I was getting irritated with their intense stare down. Before I could even get a word out, her guard dogs were at her side in a second. They really treated her as if she were some precious jewel. I held my hands up and stood back.

I let Vanessa a warning that I was coming for her. She was going to pay, and I was going to enjoy every movement of it. She, however, didn’t seem to appreciate it and was now in my personal space, and I was starting to panic. I was almost positive Vanessa could take me, but that didn’t mean I wouldn’t bullshit my way out. I instantly placed a smirk on my face

I was tired of Vanessa getting everything that she wanted, especially when I wanted them. She always gets love and affection, while I’m just the school slut. Don’t get me wrong, I know I made that name for myself, but if the roles were reversed no matter how much of a slut she was, she would have guys falling for her left and right. I honestly don’t get it. I glared as Dylan and Kayden hauled her off. I slumped into a seat next to Zion.

“Do you want to dance?” I asked

“I don’t dance.”

“What do you mean? Everybody can dance if they try.”

“That’s precisely why I didn’t say that I can’t, but that I don’t.”

I huffed. Was he always this much of a bore?

“So, when are we going to start this little plan that you got going on?”

“Soon.”

I sighed.

“I’m supposed to be your partner in this, right? So give me more information than ‘soon’!”

Now slightly annoyed, he turns toward me.

“Look, for now, all I need you to do is keep tabs on Vanessa. What’s she doing? Where’s she’s going and when she’s doing it, okay?”

“We’ll move when I say so. So until then, don’t question me.”

I slowly nodded my head before turning away from him. I heard him sigh from behind me.

“Do you wanna dance?”

I smiled and took his hand. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all.

Vanessa

The next couple of weeks went by like a blur. School was boring as usual, and everyone was preparing for exams. I didn’t really do much this weekend besides hanging out with Kai and our family, and I was really starting to dread Monday. Early Monday morning Leila’s ringtone woke me up.

“Hey babe, what’s up?”

“The schools closed!”

“Really? For what?”

“Apparently, they found a faulty design in the building. It’s a crazy safety hazard.”

“Wait, aren’t they just going to move us to another building like they did in middle school?”

“Nope, the high school has way more students than the middle school. We’re the biggest school in town, so none of the other schools are going to be able to hold us.”

“Nice. Do you know how long we’ll be out?”

“I’m not sure. Know one knows if they actually have to take the entire building down or if it is something that can be easily fixed. I do know that they don’t want it to be any longer than a month, but until then our assignments are going to be sent to us via email. I feel like a month isn’t a reasonable estimation. Stuff like that takes time, right?”

“I would think so.”

“And...” Leila dragged out.

“What do you have planned?”

“I think we should go to Kayden’s family lake house. They just brought it so everything new.”

“Leila, you have to actually talk to them before you start making plans.”

“I already did. He told me to run it by you, you know since you’re his girlfriend and all.”

“Shut up.”

Leila giggled, and I shook my head. This girl was too much.

“Well, then It looks like we’re going on a trip!”

Packing for the trip was a breeze, even though Leila tried to pack her entire closet. I was pretty excited about this trip. It had been a while since I got away and it would be nice to chill with everybody. Leila and I went to various stores and made sure that we had everything we might need. We wanted to make sure we were well prepared in case anything happened.

“So who’s going with who?” I asked Dylan

“You, Kai and Kayden are with me.”

“Sadie’s taking Ava, Noah, Leila, and Tony.”

“And Chloe’s got Levi, Avery, Rafe, Mason, and Sage.”

“How long will it take?”

“No more than 5 hours.”

“I’ll take the lead, and the rest of you can follow.” Sadie offered

“Okay, then we’re ready to go!” Sadie cheered.

The drive was so calming that I fell asleep in the first ten minutes. I woke up during the third stop and saw the others leaving us.

“Hey, why aren’t we on the road?” I asked Kayden.

“Don’t worry babe. We just needed change for the gas.”

“I’m going to go get some snacks, you coming?” he asked

I nodded my head and followed him in. We came back with our snacks and drinks and waited for Dylan to fill the tank. We were on the road for twenty minutes before the car slowed and eventually shut off.

“What just happened?” I asked

“That’s impossible!” Dylan yelled.

“What?” Kayden asked

“It says the cars on E.”

“What the hell?!”

The three of us got out of the car staring at it in disbelief. I heard the faint sound of dripping and followed the sound to the back of the car.

“Uh, guys? This is probably the answer to our questions.”

“Shit there’s a puncture in the tank! How the hell does that even happen?” Kayden exclaimed

“Call one of the guys to pick us up,” I suggested.

Kayden whipped out his phone and groaned.

“We would be in an area without a signal.”

I sighed it could be forever before we actually got out of here. I just wanted to go to the Lake House and sleep. It was still the afternoon, but not many people took these roads, especially during the week.

“Should I wake Kai up?”

“No, we’ll figure something out,” Dylan said, pacing.

With everything going on I haven’t had the time to go through the grimoire lately, so I was short on spells. This sucked. It didn’t help that the heat only seemed to intensify as time went by. We were all irritated, and Kai was still sleeping like the dead.

“You know, this might be a little easier if you tried to help!” Dylan grounded out to Kayden.

“What the hell am I supposed to do? News flash Dylan, we don’t have any gas. There’s not much that I can do!”

“Besides, this was your fault anyway!”

“My fault?!”

“Yes! You’re the one who filled the tank! How could you have not noticed it leaking?!”

Then their words came down to angry whispers.

“I can’t believe you would put my mate in danger like this!” Kayden hissed

“Your mate? Sorry asshat, but she’s my mate, not yours!”

“No, she’s mine!”

I didn’t really understand what they were talking about, but I knew it wasn’t going to help the situation. They were beginning to get loud again, and soon they were full-on arguing, and half of the stuff they were fighting over was completely irrelevant. Kai groaned in the back.

“Hey, sleepy-head.”

“What the hell are they fighting about?”

“What aren’t they arguing about, is the question.”

“What happened?”

“There was a puncture in the tank. How it got there, no one knows, but we no longer have any gas.”

“You’re kidding, right?”

“Nope.”

Kai got out of the car and stretched before leaning against the car. We both watched as Kayden and Dylan continued to fight. I really didn’t understand. I thought they were finally starting to get along, but apparently, that wasn’t the case. When things started looking like they would turn physical, I stepped in between them.

“You guys need to calm down!”

“Don’t tell us what to do!”

“Stay out of it!”

I was officially done. They could go fuck themselves if they wanted to. I flinched and took a step back. Neither of them had ever so much as raised their voice at me, so I was at a loss for words. I slid my phone out of my pocket and crossed the street, looking for a better signal. Dylan glanced over at me.

“What are you doing? It’s not like you’re going to get a signal, come back.”

I turned away from him before huffing and making my way to the other side of the road. I stopped suddenly. I couldn’t move. There was an ominous presence gradually coming our way. The closer it got, the more bloodthirsty it became, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake out of its hold. The guys had already gone back to fighting, and I didn’t know what to do or say. I couldn’t even form the words. How could I explain this feeling? It was here. Even though everything was happening at the speed of light, it felt like everything had slowed down

The truck coming at me, Kai yelling my name, the fear on Dylan and Kayden’s face as they moved towards me, and then finally, the impact. As I flew into the air, I felt so disoriented. I could still hear, but everything seemed too far away. The wind whistled and whipped around me, and I couldn’t even ask it to stop my fall. I landed with a thud. The sound of my bones crunching and snapping rattled me. The boys were at my side in a second; trying to get me to respond to them in some kind of way, but I couldn’t. My breathing slowed as I struggled to make my mouth form words. And then I stopped breathing.
