Chapter 3

I had my usual dream. A brown wolf appeared before me. The wolf seemed much larger than an ordinary wolf and had smooth, luscious fur. In my dreams, the wolf always followed me almost as if it was my silent protector. I never really understood why I dreamed of the wolf or what it meant. After the dream became a reoccurring thing, I decided reading up about it on Google wouldn’t hurt. The majority of the sites indicated that the wolf was a representation of support or a guardian. The dream itself wasn’t too crazy, so I honestly didn’t overthink about it. That was before the dreams changed...

On this particular night, my dream started off pretty normally. The brown wolf protectively circled me. I dropped to my knees and held my arms out to the wolf. The wolf stops and stares at me intensely before coming towards me. I was happy that the wolf actually came to me. It usually kept its distance, and my usual attempts at getting close to it often ended up in failure. I giggled as the wolf licked the palm of my hand. I threaded my fingers through the wolf’s fur and scratched behind its ear. The wolf hummed in content before laying its massive head on my lap.

“You’re not as scary as I thought.”

The wolf seemed to nuzzle deeper into my lap. We seemed to go on comfortably like this for a while before the wolf tensed and a low growl emitted from the back of its throat. The wolf began circling me again suddenly on high alert.

“What’s wrong? What’s got you all riled up?”

The wolf let out a sharp growl. It was short and vicious, much like a warning. That’s when I saw it, the inky blackness that climbed up the walls. The inky blackness seemed to swallow everything in its path, and because I’m so damn lucky, I seemed to be what it wanted most. That’s when my fear spiked. What would happen if the darkness sucked me in? What lies on the other side of the darkness? I knew there was more darkness to come and maybe even hell. As it inched closer and closer to me, I was knocked down by an unknown force, but whatever it was, it wasn’t right. I knew this was the end. I knew that the wolf could only keep the darkness at bay for so long. I shut my eyes tight and waited for the darkness to claim me, but it never did. I open my eyes to see my room erupt in flames. I scanned my room, searching for the wolf, but it was nowhere to be found. I now preferred darkness. I needed to find a way out. I couldn’t die, not like this. Before I had a chance to find a way to safety, flames reached out, licking over my skin, causing me to shriek in agony.

I awoke panting, and I was sure that I was sweating. I was wondering why the dream changed so suddenly and what it could possibly mean, although I probably didn’t want to find out. Before I could dwell on my dream any longer, I got up and took a shower.

I combed out my silky black hair before deciding to curl it. I looked in the mirror and smiled at what I saw. My olive-toned skin looked fresh and hydrated, my olive green eyes sparkled with excitement, and my makeup looked flawless. I was more than ready for my first day of school.

Once I was done, I packed my bag and jumped into my electric blue Camaro that I got for my 16th birthday. When I started my car, my ring tone “My Main” by Mila J came on, and I knew it was my best friend, Leila.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“I was wondering if you could come to pick me up. My stupid brother was supposed to drop mr off and completely dithed me.”

“No problem. I’m on my way.”

When I got to her house, I honked twice, and she came running down to the car.

“Thanks, you’re a lifesaver. I so... didn’t want to walk to school.”

“You know I got you, baby.”

When we got to school, we headed to our lockers. We were lucky to get our lockers right next to each other. As I was opening my locker, I felt two hands wrap around my waist, and when I turned around, Emmett greeted me with a kiss.

“Hey baby, I had a dream about you last night.”

“Yeah, what about?”

“Well, we were in my room and let’s just say we did a lot of this....” he said as he kissed me deeply.

“I think I like that dream,” I said, smiling up at him.

I smiled when Emmett looped his arm around mine and Leila’s and walked us to class.

Before I walked into the classroom, I gave Emmett one last parting kiss and walked to my usual seat in the front. When I sat down, I noticed that the “Bad Boy” Dylan Alverez passed by his usual seat and sat down next to me.

“So, how were your parents this morning?”

“Annoying lately all they’ve been doing is fighting. My mom and dad argued for some unknown reason, and they blew up at each other for five minutes before deciding they were just going to ignore each other altogether.”

“Whatever it is, they definitely don’t want me to know.”

Before Leila could respond, our Spanish teacher Ms. Rosita walked in.

When the lesson started, I felt a piece of paper hit my arm.

Can you help me? I have no idea what she’s saying.

-Dylan

After I read the note, I looked up at Dylan. He was smiling at me, and I couldn’t help but return a smile.

Umm sure I don’t see why not

-Vanessa

When I slipped the note back to him, his smile grew wider.

Okay cool, how about your house tomorrow?

-Dylan

Yeah sounds good to me. Here’s my address: 3629 St. Mary Street.

-Vanessa

And that’s when the bell rung.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Dylan said, winking at me

“Kay.”

I only had a minute before Leila cornered me and started badgering me with questions.

“What was that all about?” Leila asked.

“What was what all about?” I said, trying hopelessly to get to my locker.

“Well, for starters, you didn’t pay attention in class, and you couldn’t help me tell Jesse he was mucho sexy in Spanish because you were too busy passing notes with Dylan Alverez.”

“Well, if you must know, I’m going to tutor Dylan at my house, and maybe if you paid more attention in class, you could tell Jesse that he was muy caliente yourself.”

When I saw the confused look on her face, I sighed, “It means very hot. Leila, I love you dearly but if you don’t get serious in Spanish your really going to fail.”

“Ohhh okay, I’ll keep that in mind,” she said completely ignoring me. I laughed and nudged her gently. her and her damned selective hearing.

“You know, Emmett won’t like you spending time with Dylan, right?” Leila said, giving me a look.

“I don’t see why Emmett would be upset,” I said, heading towards my locker.

“What boyfriend wouldn’t care that their girl is spending time with Dylan Alverez, the school’s bad boy and one of the top ten hotties around.”

“It’s just tutoring Leila. I’m not going to seduce him as soon as he walks through the door.”

“I would,” Leila giggled.

“Come on, Nessa. Don’t you at least find him just a little bit tempting?” she asked, raking her eyes over him.

“No,” I said, lying through my ass.

“That’s bull, and you know it, I mean, just look at him.”

And I did. He looked delicious enough to eat. He had golden tan skin, luscious lips, and muscles that could make a girl go crazy. And I couldn’t forget his mesmerizing green eyes or his black hair that is always styled to perfection.

His whole demeanor screamed sex and other than the times that he pulled little pranks or ditched a couple of classes with his brothers, I don’t see why people labeled him a bad boy. I mean, he can be scary at times, but from the little time we spent talking to each other, he seems pretty sweet.

“You do realize you’ve been eye-fucking him this whole time right?” Leila teased, trying to keep her laughter in.

“I was not!”

On the way to the cafeteria, we got into a conversation about how Justin Bieber and Paul Wesley kind of look-alike until I bumped into something made of stone. I looked up to see Dylan smiling down at me.

“Sorry, I should’ve been paying more attention,” I said sheepishly.

“It’s okay, I don’t mind bumping into a beautiful girl,” he said, making me blush.

“I’ll see you around,” I said, flashing him a smile and he nodded his head in response.

As I headed over to our table, I felt a smile take over my face as I thought about Dylan.

“Hey babe,” I said as I sat down next to Emmett.

“Hey, I got your lunch,” he said, kissing my cheek.

“What took you so long to get here?” Emmett asked, returning to his pizza.

“She was talking to Dylan Alverez,” Leila answered for me.

“Dylan Alverez?”

Hmm...Is it me or does Emmett sound jealous?

“Oh, Emmett, don’t tell me you’re jealous,” Leila said, reading my mind.

“Nah, I know Nessa’s all mine,” he said as he put his arm around me.

I usually hated it when people called me Nessa, but it sounded really sexy coming from Emmett’s mouth. When the bell rung, we all parted ways to our last period class. I was glad P.E. would be my last class. When I finished getting dressed, I headed for the gym and found Dylan waving at me. I walked over to the bleachers and sat down next to him.

“This is the first time I’ve seen you without your friend Leila.”

“Yeah, we’re usually not apart for too long,” I chuckled.

“Okay, class, settle down!” Ms. Harrison’s voice boomed.

“Today, we are going to learn some trust exercises.”

“Ms. H, how do you expect us to trust that?!” Katherine said as she pointed to Lucas, who had his hands in his P.E. shorts.

“What?” Lucas said, oblivious to half of the girls looking at him in disgust.

Ms. Harrison shook her head and continued speaking.

“To start off, basically, you guys will be falling into each other’s arms.”

“And since Lucas and Kat seem to be having problems, they will be partners,” Ms. Harrison finished.

“Hold on! You want me to fall back in his arms?! Did you not see what he was doing with his hands? For all I know, he could be carrying around some type of disease,” Kat protested as everyone laughed, but Ms. H just walked back to her office, completely ignoring her.

“So, do you want to be my partner?” Dylan asked.

“Yeah sure,” I said, smiling up at him.

Lucas and Kat took their positions a couple of feet away from us.

“Drop me, and I’ll kick your ass!” Kat said.

Dylan chuckled and held his arms out for me. When I finally did fall back, it felt so good to be in his muscular arms, and I instantly felt safe and protected. I almost didn’t want to move, but I thought it would be pretty weird if I didn’t. When I was back on my feet, I heard a loud thud.

“Uggh!” Kat yelled and jumped up to her feet.

“What the hell did you do that for?”

“That was for being annoying,” Lucas said, trying to cover up his laugh.

“Kiss and make up already!” Ms. H yelled from her office.

“Okay fine, I’m sorry.” He said, holding his arms out to Katherine.

Kat smiled as she embraced him.

“See, I knew you would come around,” Lucas said, wrapping his arms around her.

And that’s when Kat’s knee made contact with his groin. Lucas hit the ground, groaning in pain.

“That was for being a jackass!” Kat yelled and stormed off to one of her friends.

A little later, the bell rang, and Dylan and I agreed to meet at my house tomorrow after school. This was the first time in a while that I had gotten excited to tutor someone and I was really starting to question my reasons as to why.

After school, I met Emmett and Leila at the mall and was surprised to see Jesse with them. I was definitely going to have to get the details from Leila later.

“So where to first?” I asked.

“Okay, well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m hungry, so I say we hit the food court,” Leila said, and we all agreed. When we got there, I was surprised to see Dylan sitting down with his family.

“What do you guys want to eat?” I asked.

“Well I could go for some Chow Mein,” Leila said.

“To Panda Express we go!” The boys said and ran off.

They are too weird. When Leila and I started walking towards Emmett and Jesse, I caught Dylan and his brother Tony looking at us. The classic song went off and “Don’t Wake Me Up” by Chris Brown came on. Leila and I glanced at each other and smiled before dancing over to our table.

When I sat down, I felt two hands touch my shoulder and turned around to find Dylan looking down at me.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Mi familia quiere conocerte.” (My family wants to meet you.)

“Not bad, right?” Dylan asked

“No, not bad at all,” I said, smiling at him.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Emmett glaring at Dylan, but Dylan either didn’t notice or didn’t care.

“Please come, or they’ll never leave me alone. They really want to meet you,” Dylan whispered in my ear.

“Bien solo dame un minuto,” I said, and he looked at me confused.

I laughed, “I said fine, just give me a minute.”

“Oh.. I knew that.”

“Sure you did,” I said, patting his arm.

“I’ll be right back,′ I said to the guys.

I got up to leave the table and Emmett grabbed my hand.

“Where are you going?”

“Just to meet his family.”

Emmett cocked an eyebrow. “It took you a month to meet my family. I didn’t even know you guys were friends so why does he keep showing up.”

“Yeah, well, he’s not my boyfriend so I don’t exactly have to be nervous about whether his family likes me or not, now do I?”

Emmett cracked a small smile. I bent down and kissed him.

“And he’s a new friend so try and be nice, please.”

Emmett huffed but nodded his head and I couldn’t help but smile.

As I followed Dylan back to his family’s table, I felt Emmett’s eyes burning a hole into the back of my head. I’ll have to figure out a way to make it up to him later. When we arrived at the table, a pretty woman greeted me.

“Vanessa, cariño es un placer conocerte.” (Vanessa, it’s a pleasure to meet you.)

“Igualmente,” (Likewise.) I replied.

“I’m Dylan’s mother, and this is Rafe, Tony, Sage, Eva, and the baby is Nyla,” she finished.

“And, what an adorable baby she is!” I said, lightly tickling her and her angelic laugh filled the atmosphere.

Then, the song “Sin City” by Chrishan started playing in my pocket. I rolled my eyes when I realized it was Emmett texting me.

Emmett:

Does it take that long to introduce yourself?? Not like you left your boyfriend and friends or anything, right?

“Oh Dios Mio!” (Oh My God!) I groaned.

That boy was so infuriating sometimes.

“I’m really sorry, but I have to go. It was nice meeting you all,” I said, and Nyla looked like she was about to cry.

“Well, you definitely made a good impression on Nyla, you’ll have to come and visit us.”

“I’d love to.”

“Goodbye, baby girl,” I cooed to Nyla.

“Well, I thought you’d know by now I’m not a baby nor am I a girl,” Dylan said smirking

“Shut up!” I laughed.

“Goodbye, Dylan.”

“See you,” He replied

“Really, Emmett! Was that really necessary?!”

“What? I just didn’t think it was cool to leave like that. I mea-.”

I cut him off.

“Emmett, please shut up! I didn’t ditch you. He said he wanted me to meet his mom, so I did!”

I kinda felt bad for yelling, but he was really starting to piss me off.

“Look, I’m sorry for yelling, but you need to chill out.”

After we all calmed down, we headed to the movie theater and decided to look at “Columbiana.” When we found our seats, Emmett slid his arm around me, and I snuggled up to his side, my past anger now gone. Hopefully, Emmett would stay mellow because I really hate fighting with him.
