Prologue - Welcome to a disaster I call my life

“You did what? Are you insane? Why would you quit your job? Richard, I’m starting to think that you’re not taking your responsibilities seriously. We have loans in the bank and if we don’t pay them they’re going to kick us out of our house. Is that what you want for your son? My job isn’t going to be good enough to pay the debt and you won’t be able to find a new one in time.”

“It wasn’t me who wanted all these fancy things in the house. You’re the one who went to the bank. We were fine without the pool and this huge useless TV. No one even watches TV anymore. You keep buying all these new stuff to impress your slut friends but guess what, Veronica, no one cares. They aren’t even your real friends, all they do is drink and gossip about each other behind their backs and once they see you as you really are, without this glamorous mask that you put on for some unexplained reason, they’ll be gone from your life faster than a millisecond.”

“That’s not even a valid point, you unemployed piece of garbage. That doesn’t explain why you would quit your job. And as for my friends they aren’t sluts, they are good people and they know me and love me as I really am. They are the only ones who truly see and understand me so don’t even dare to insult them like that. Anyways, would you please explain to me why you left your only source of income?”

“I quit because I’m miserable. I hated working there from the day one but I worked because I wanted our family to have a better life but now I realize that money isn’t going to fix any of our problems so at least I won’t have to put up with my boss’s bullshit for another day. And don’t worry about the loans, we can sell a lot of things from the house, like the TV or your jewelry, bags and shoes. You don’t even use half of those.”

“Oh, please, Richard, grow up and be a man at least for once in your lifetime. Everyone hates their jobs, that’s what jobs are made for but they also pay you money which you need so you won’t starve to death. And how dare you talk about my wardrobe like that. Don’t even think about touching my Louis Vuitton bags and shoes, you Neanderthal. They are the only things that keep my sanity in this house. I’d rather sell you than let any other human disgrace their purity.”

“Oh, I know you’d love that but I’ve got some bad news for you, sweetheart, I’m not going anywhere and we both know that your reputation would be ruined if we ever got separated and there’s no way you’ll let that happen. You know what happened to our neighbors when they divorced each other. They got completely erased from the town’s high society. ”

“Ugh, shut up, you moron. I hate you and I wish I’d never even met you. The day my father told me I had to marry you was the day my life ended. Oh god, what I wouldn’t do to change that.”

“Would you guys stop fighting for one second, please? At this point you’ll end up throwing chairs at each other.” I interrupted my parents who were eager to murder each other. I’m not even exaggerating. You haven’t seen their faces and trust me that’s a good thing. That stuff’s going to haunt me in my nightmares and not only my dreams are ruined and I can’t do anything to change that, real life isn’t any better at all.

This is the 10th time they’re arguing. And that’s just for today. Tomorrow they’ll find a new subject to fight each other and the cycle just keeps going and going. It doesn’t seem like it has an end if I’m being honest.

I wish they would just get a divorce but they’re too stubborn for that. The whole town talks about how perfect their relationship is but little do they know they are a complete opposite of that. I still don’t know why they keep torturing each other and not only that. After they’re done fighting they end up being aggressive towards me too. Thankfully not physically. But at this point I’d rather get hit by a car than listen to their argument one more time.

“Ugh, go to your room, Jesse. The adults are talking.” My mom practically yelled at me. Her eyes were full of abnormal rage and her face looked like a bull that was ready to reap out a poor bullfighter’s insides.

I rolled my eyes and left those two together. Unfortunately I could still hear their annoying voices in my room so I decided to turn on some music. I didn’t even want to listen to the music but as you can probably tell by now I didn’t have much of a choice. It was at least better than listening to my parents dueling like they were in the Hunger Games.

Oh, sorry, I was so distracted with those two I completely forgot to introduce myself.

Hi, I’m Jesse Goodman and I’m a 17-year-old high school student. This is a story about my unfortunate, miserable and melancholic life.

I live in a little town so there’s really not much to do here. Everyone knows each other so you can’t even meet new people.

I’m a writer for the school’s newspaper. I also don’t like sports and partying. That’s why I’m spending a Saturday night in my house and not somewhere being unconsciously drunk. I tried drinking but it just tasted awful so I gave up on that. Honestly I wouldn’t mind being drunk as long as I don’t have to listen to my parents battling downstairs.

On a more positive note I actually have friends. I don’t know why I’m saying that like it’s something out of the blue but for a loner like me it’s actually quite a nice surprise.

One of my friends name is Lucy. She’s like the most popular girl in school or something. Maybe not the most popular but if there was a contest she’d definitely be at least in top 5.

You might be wondering why a girl like that would be hanging out with a loser like me. Well she and I were really good friends since middle school where she wasn’t pretty, like at all. Some guys used to call her piglet and not in a cute way. But after the summer break her boobs got bigger and well pretty much everybody knows what happens after that so I won’t bore you with unnecessary details. Fortunately for me and Felicity she didn’t forget about us and she still hangs out with us losers.

Felicity’s my second friend. She’s mute. She wasn’t born like that though. She got in a real bad accident with her father when she was in 5th grade. Sadly her father couldn’t make it and she hasn’t spoken a word ever since. Me and Lucy tried everything we could to help her but our every attempt ended up without a success. After that we kind of gave up on trying to help her speak so we discovered a new solution. We learned sign language. It was super hard but we had a good motivation so it didn’t take that long to learn the basics. Soon I pretty much became a pro and I can literally understand everything Felicity tries to tell us. Lucy isn’t as good as me but at least she didn’t give up halfway through.

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the whole reason why I’m even this lonely and depressed.

I’m... gay.

I haven’t told anyone about this and you have no idea how many nights I spent without sleep because of that. If my parents knew they would literally kick me out and disown me. A lot of the times I even thought about taking my own life but I couldn’t do it in the end.

But a week ago I decided to finally face my fears and come out of the closet. But only to my closest friends. The ones that I mentioned above. I planned the whole thing. I would take them to the restaurant on this Sunday and just talk to them and hopefully they wouldn’t tell me they never wanted to see me again.

And that was exactly the plan for tomorrow. But knowing my luck something had to go wrong... Something always goes wrong when it comes to me.
