Brody’s POV

I walked into the pack house and straight up to my room. Hearing soft sobs I opened the door quietly. Brooke was stroking Hope’s hair and talking softly to her. Hope was much calmer but was far from okay. Her eyes were red from crying. She had been through something bad. I was certain of it.

Entering the room I walked over to Brooke, who kissed her forehead and walked out of the room closing the door softly. I sat on the bed and looked at my mate. My wolf and I were worried about her. She glanced up at me and then closed her eyes. I noticed that her fists were clenched in the covers. I stood and then positioned myself so that I could spoon her and hold her close to me. I kicked my shoes off and they fell off the end of the bed and landed with a thump.

“I- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you.” Hope sniffled.

My soft laughter seemed to calm her. “It’s okay babe, just rest now. We’ll talk later.”

She tensed, then relaxed as my arms and body wrapped around hers like a protective cocoon under the covers. I leaned my chin over her head and just laid there letting the soft sparks of the bond calm her. I was not going to question her. She just wasn’t up to it.

At some point we both fell asleep. I woke to a light knock on the door. “Come in.” I said tightening my grip on my mate. The door opened and Brooke entered with Jaxon and Luna Sherry. I slid out from under the covers so I didn’t wake Hope up and went to them and we walked out into the hall to talk.

“Sorry to barge in Brody. I need to take her home and find out what all of this is about. Thank you for calming her and taking care of her.” Her Luna said softly.

“Okay, that is probably a good idea. Do you want me to come with you in case she needs me?”

“No, I’m not sure she would speak about it in front of you. I think this is something that is deeply personal, something that changed who she is and how she sees herself as a person. If we need you I’ll have Jaxon call.”

I nodded. I didn’t want to let her go but it did seem like she needed her aunt. Jaxon walked into my bedroom and pulled her into his arms and easily lifted her. He murmured something to her and she cuddled into his chest and wrapped her arms around him. My heart felt like it was being stabbed as he walked out with her. My wolf growled in my chest and I push him back.

“Thank you Brody. She is lucky to have you.” I gave her a half smile as she followed her son out the front door. I didn’t think Hope felt that way though. If only I could get a read on my mate. She seemed to blow hot then cold as if she was undecided or confused. I watched as they drove off.
