Lost Hope

I could hear motorcycles as I woke up. There was fighting and gunshots ringing out. My eyes fluttered open and I blinked several times before they settled on Brody laying on the bed next to me with his arm around me protectively. I pulled the oxygen mask off and he noticed I was awake. His eyes were that of his wolf. He was in protective mode. Almost immediately they turned back to his normal color. Jax Teller’s voice rang out from the Sons of Anarchy episode and I smirked at Brody. He paused the show on Netflix and pulled me carefully into a better position for my side.

“How is Angelina? Did you guys kill them all? What happened after I blacked out?” I started to move around more than I should and Brody pushed me down so I wouldn’t overdo it.

“Stop moving you’ll reopen your stitches.” He put some weight on me to still me. I sighed with frustration.

“She is doing better. She was really beaten up, she is healing slower than you would. She is part wolf and that is why she is alive. Her mom was human. You’ve been out for more than a day and you are about half healed. You should be okay by Monday for school if you want to go.” He ruffled his hair and his eyes took on a pained expression.

“What? What haven’t you told me?”

“Her little brother didn’t make it. Rourke’s guys ripped him apart in front of her.” The little boy flashed in my memory and I felt the pain of losing a young pack member. “She is angry and hurting, dealing with her fury and anguish.”

He chuckled a little bit to himself and rubbed the back of his neck a little. “Oh and I guess we missed her seventeenth birthday this week.” I looked at him oddly. I was not connecting the dots yet.

“What? Why is her birthday suddenly important?” Brody shook his head with a grin. He leaned against me and kissed me passionately for a moment.

“Because she hadn’t been to school since then and she found her mate in the middle of the fight.”

“Who?” I asked, my eyes wide and curious.

“NO! Really?” I couldn’t believe how funny fate was and how karma could be such a bitch. My smile was both happy for her and Jax and sad for her loss of her little brother.

“Jax is moving her in with him as soon as she gets out of here.”

“As I was blacking out I saw you guys with Rourke. He is dead right? His men too?” I was afraid that he somehow got away and I wasn’t sure I could handle that right now. Brody put his arms around me and shoved his nose in my hair tickling me just a little as he inhaled my scent.

“He couldn’t be more dead. He was torn apart and buried in four different corners of the territory. His men were in the area and he called them in before realizing that we were there, so we took care of them too. There is no one left to hurt you.”

I hadn’t realized I was holding my breath until I let it out. He was laying back on the bed with me a little later when the door opened and Brooke bounced in beaming happily. She ran to my bed and crawled right over Brody as if he wasn’t even there. When she managed to knee him in the groin while she hugged me I heard a grunt as he slid off of the bed while she happily slid into his place. Ryker stood between Brooke and Brody. “Sorry man she can be pretty unstoppable when she gets going but you know that.” Brody walked around slowly to my injured side and made sure that my best friend didn’t accidentally hurt me. I’m pretty sure she meant to hit Brody there on her way into the bed. He was glaring at her. She giggled and smiled sweetly at him. I tried to keep my expression neutral but it was so hard. I finally had to turn away from him.

“I’m so glad you are awake. Angelina and Jax are mates! Brody said that he carried you out and that Jax had to almost fight her to get her to let him help her. She was fighting to get to her little brother’s body. She is going to give him grief I think. She was really worried about you and she keeps asking for you.” I could see that she was linking someone and just a couple of minutes later Angelina walked in with a very protective Jax on her right.

“Hope? Can I talk to you?” I looked at Brody and he nodded and gave me a peck on the cheek then grabbed Brooke by the arm and dragged her out. Ryker laughed at Brooke’s laughing cries of abuse. Jax gave Angelina a soft kiss on the forehead and closed the door on his way out. She looked a bit uncomfortable.

“I never expected to find out that I was an alpha’s mate, especially your cousin’s.” Her embarrassed smile made me grin. “I was wondering, um, why did you come to my house? I mean, we weren’t exactly friends. We kind of torture each other for fun.”

I shrugged a little and winced that it pulled on my side. “When I knocked you down by accident I noticed you were hurt. When you didn’t show up at school I started to get worried and the more days you were gone the more I was certain that something was really wrong. We may not have been friends but we were pack mates. I’m glad I went and that you survived and I’m deeply sorry that your little brother didn’t make it.”

She nodded and her eyes teared up. She wiped them and forced a change of topic. “Jax wants me to move into his place when I get out of here. I’m still not sure of him, but I don’t want to go back to that house again. What do you think I should do?”

I smiled and reached for her hand. “Jax is a great guy. He will treat you right and take care of you. If I were you I would move into his pack house and if you aren’t ready for sharing a room with him then get a room of your own until you are ready.”

I linked Jax. Cuz? Where are Angelina’s things? Are they still at the house or did you have it moved to the pack house already?

It’s all at the pack house. I didn’t want her to have to go back there if she didn’t want to.

Okay, thanks.

“Jax had all of your stuff moved into his pack house so you wouldn’t have to face that house again if you don’t want to. He is really a sweet guy.” I yawned and started to get really sleepy.

Angelina nodded her head, a far off look in her eyes. “Yes he is. I’ll let you get back to sleep now so you can heal. Oh and Hope?” I raised my eyes at her.

“Thanks.” I smiled and Brody walked through the doorway. Angelina walked out and Jax put his arm around her and smiled at me and waved before shutting the door. I felt the bed dip as he climbed back in and laid me into his body comfortably. I fell asleep to the sound of his heart and motorcycles in the background.
