CHAPTER 31: ONE TRUTH NO LIES
I woke up to the constant beeping of the heart monitor, groaning lightly as sharp white light entered my eyes, making me close them again.
I shifted my left hand in discomfort, suddenly registering the presence of the IV digging into my skin.
“Elizabeth?” The bed dipped to one side as I heard a voice mumble my name with concern.
“Are you awake?”
I opened my eyes so as to give Becca an answer.
“What happened?” My voice sounded strange to my own ears and my mouth felt as dry as the Sahara.
“You were...attacked.” She replied, grabbing my free hand and capturing it in her warm one.
“Is...the baby okay?” I asked, my brow creasing as I freed my hand from hers and connected it to my abdomen.
She nodded her head, giving me a sad smile. I sighed in relief as I rubbed my hand over my lower abdomen, calming myself down.
“What day is it?” I asked with doubt in my voice, feeling like I had been out for more that just a few hours.
“Thursday.” She replied after thinking for a moment, “You have been out for two days”.
I nodded, my eyes falling onto the neatly patterened floor as I asked her the one question I had been dreading asking, “Where is Reid?”
“Oh my baby! You are finally up!” I sucked in a breath as my mother wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. She had finally made her way here as soon as she had heard I was awake, giving Becca the perfect excuse to escape the hospital, probably her least favourite place in the whole wide world.
“Hello mom...I can’t breath!” I muttered when she did not loosen her hold.
“Oh sorry.” She cheekily smiled at me as she sat beside me, “How do you feel?”
“I’ve been better.” I replied honestly.
“You’ll be feeling good soon honey, don’t worry-”
She was cut short as a doctor entered the room, smiling warmly at me and my mother stood up from next to me.
“Good Morning Elizabeth...” He said as his eyes fell on the notepad in his hands, “How are you feeling?”
“Well, good. You are making a fast recovery. I’m happy to inform you that your baby is fine but you have two bruised ribs and a fractured ankle.”
I nodded at him, smiling a little as he confirmed that my baby was fine.
“You are free to discharge tomorrow morning. It will take about 6 weeks for your ankle to heal and I would suggest after that you get a few sessions of physiotherapy. Get well soon.”
I thanked the doctor and he left soon.
“Who did this mom? Who did this to me?”
“The Michelakis family.”
I frowned, expecting her to say Bea’s name. I racked my brain for any connection and my mind went back to the day I sat hidden under Reid’s desk in his office as I sucked his dick and his father talked about the Michelakis family and how... dangerous they were.
“Where is Reid?” I asked her the same question I had asked Becca earlier that she had chosen to avoid answering.
My mother hesitated for a minute, her mouth continuously closing and opening without any word escaping her lips. She sucked in a an audible breath, “He...he is hunting down Dominic Michelakis, the man who did this to you.”
I gasped, my eyes widening in horror, “How long has he been gone for?”
“A day and a half now...We haven’t heard from him since then.”
“Oh my God.” I shot up from the bed wincing as a sharp pain shot up on my right side, “They will kill him. Oh my God no. Why didn’t you stop him?”
“Elizabeth, I saw no reason to. Dominic tried to kill you and...your baby with you. It’s only fair that he has to face the same fate as he planned for you and Reid went just to make sure of that.” I was shocked at the words that were coming out of her mouth.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Have you lost it? No one has to die and especially not Reid!” I all but shouted at her to break her out of her murderous reverie.
“I’m sorry...” She hung her head in shame as she realized what she had said, “I have no idea what came over me baby. I was just really scared about...you and at that moment I was not in a position to stop him from leaving.” She sighed, kissing the top of my head,“He’ll be fine. He has the best of his security with him. He is a wise young man, I’m sure he won’t kill anyone. It was so absurd of me to even think-”
“Mom, I have to tell you something and you have to promise me that you won’t freak out.” I dragged my eyes away from hers, making up my mind that it was time she had to know.
Before it was too late.
My gut told me that it was indeed too late.
“What is it, honey? You know you can tell me anything.” She replied, stroking my hair.
I smacked my lips, my mouth suddenly feeling even drier, “Can you first give me some water?”
She nodded and filled up a glass of water quickly. She helped me get up into a sitting position and kept the glass onto my lips, tilting it and keeping my head in place as I quickly gulped it down and quenched my thirst.
I thanked her and leaned back onto the bed, suddenly feeling nauseous.
“You might want to sit down for this.” I muttered as she stood over me in concern.
She sat next to me, grabbing my hand, kissing my knuckles and keeping it secure in her lap.
“Promise me, for the sake of your grandchild that you won’t try to kill me after I tell you this-”
“Why would you even say tha-” She interrupted, obviously not knowing what I was about to tell her would probably make her lose faith in me.
“Fine, I promise I won’t freak out and try to kill my own daughter, like I would ever do that honey.” She let out a snort.
I closed my eyes and said the words I had been trying to keep a secret from her for so long, “I am pregnant with Reid’s child.”
