Chapter 33

CHAPTER 33: BANG BANG

“Can you stop tickling my foot for God’s sake?” I grumbled in annoyance, straightening to swat away Ryan’s hand. My voice sounded scratchy to my own ears and my throat was sore.

“I was just testing to see whether you could still feel anything.”

“I just broke my ankle, I’m not paralyzed, Einstein.”

“Who?” He furrowed his eyebrows, making me realize that he was actually serious.

“Seriously?”

He shrugged his shoulders in response.

“You can’t get both beauty and brains now, can you?” He replied smugly, waggling his eyebrows.

I shook my head at him, obviously realizing that he was trying to distract me from the situation at hand as I wiped away the tears consistently trailing down my cheek with the back of my hand, ignoring the concerned look I had been getting from Reid for the past few minutes as he sat in front of me, driving and stealing glances at my face in the rear view mirror.

“How much more time is it going to take?” I asked, looking up to finally meet his gaze in the mirror.

“5 minutes tops.”

I nodded, continuing to call her phone again and again, in hope that she would pick up her phone, or just... anyone one would pick up her phone.

All of a sudden, Nathan who had been sitting stiffly in the passenger seat looking like he rather belonged in Madame Tussauds as a wax statue received a call.

“Yes...Fine, thank you.” He muttered and ended the call.

“You were right, she is in the warehouse downtown.” He turned to Reid who nodded in response.

“What warehouse? Where is she?!” I all but shouted, trying to get an answer out of them both. Ryan put his arm around my shoulder, trying to calm me.

“Elizabeth...I need you to relax for a minute there because I have to tell you something really important.” Reid said as he suddenly applied the brakes and turned around to look at me.

I looked outside to analyse where he had stopped when my eyes read the words ‘Parker Warehouse’.

“Wait...why does it say Parker...oh my God, what is going on?” My eyes widened in shock as I tried to figure out what the hell was happening.

“This... all of this was just not Dominic Elizabeth, this was my father.” He hesitantly said, his thumb slowly stroking my cheekbone.

“What...I don’t understand...how?” I pulled at my hair, confused.

“I’ll explain later baby, but first we need to get your mother out of here before it’s too late.”

“I’m coming with you.” I said, as I unbuckled my seat belt, ready to bolt.

“Liz, please don’t. It’s not safe out there. Only Nathan and I are going-”

“You don’t think I can take care of myself?” Given the situations that had marked the beginning of our relationship, he probably does think that, a little voice said in the back of my mind.

“No, of course not. I just don’t want her to be put in any danger...I cannot let anything happen to our child.” He explained, his hand trailing down to my abdomen, stroking the lovely small bump.

“Wait...you are pregnant?” Ryan gasped out next to me, “Oh my God! How did I not notice that...awfully loose top you are wearing?”

We both ignored him and I leaned forward to kiss him, one last time.

“Go get her.”

I leaned against the car, biting my nails as I tried to keep a close eye on the entrance of the warehouse. It was hard to even believe that there was even anyone in there since it looked so isolated and peaceful when all of a sudden, the sound of a gunshot echoed through the heavy air and my stomach dropped.

I gasped and my eyes widened to the size of saucers, matching the look on Ryan’s face.

“Don’t even try to stop me.” I told him as I started limping towards the entrance, my heart beating fast.

“I’m not going to.” He replied earnestly, joining me as we both walked as fast as we could, not knowing what to expect as we turned around from one corner to another, searching through different rows.

“Where are they?!” I exclaimed, slightly tired as my legs wobbled and I leaned on Ryan for support, feeling a sharp pain in my ribs, as if someone was tearing my rib cage apart.

“I don’t know...let’s just keep looking! Come on Elizabeth.” He encouraged me but if felt dizzy as I grabbed onto him for dear life.

“I don’t think I can hold up anymore, everything hurts...” Before I could finish my sentence, he bent down in front of me and asked me to climb up his back, offering me a piggy back ride that I was more than willing to accept.

Before I could even process anything, he was running across the empty space, searching until we just came to the very corner of the unit and then, we found the six of them but as soon as we did, the awful sound of another gunshot resonated in the almost empty warehouse and right in front of our eyes, he fell on his knees and then came the sound of a deafening scream.
