Chapter 1

As soon as I saw him I knew that he was here to bring me back. The teacher told me to show him around the school during lunch. Which is in three minutes. Oh, and did I mention that this school has two floors? Yeah, that’s my luck. I was infuriated at him and all the rest of them. I sat there steaming in my seat until the bell rang. I waited for everyone to leave including him then I walked as slow as I could to my locker and put my books away. Then I rearranged my locker although it was already neat. I knew that I was procrastinating but I didn’t care. That is, until he found me. I slammed the locker door and stood up to face him. “Why are you here? You have no right to be here. I told you guys I was done and I meant it!” I yelled at him spitefully. “I know Vi, and I’m sorry. They want you and knew that I had the best chance of finding you.” He looked at me apologetically. I stormed off toward the library. He followed right along beside me though. Curse him and his long legs. When I reached the library doors he stepped in front of me to block me from going in. “We need you Violet, you’re the best spy we have.” I stopped trying to step around him and faced him directly. “I have told them repeatedly that I was done. They messed up, they didn’t listen to me and somebody got shot. So if they needed me so badly they would have listened to me in the first place!” I was practically yelling at him. People in the library were looking at us funny so he took my arm and drug me down the hall to an abandoned classroom. “Come on Vi! Can you at least think about coming back with me? I miss you. Don’t you remember? You were always by my side. I trust you Vi, so why should it matter about them?” He had this uncanny ability to make me think back on all those missions, the good times, never the bad. “I know you trust me and I missed you too. I couldn’t keep putting up with that greedy jerk. All he does is get us into malicious fights with others in and out of our gang. You and I were the only ones who didn’t turn on each other like the others did. You weren’t there Dyl, I saw my mentor, the person who taught me how to survive, get shot and die and nobody even gave a backwards glance. They just left his body there. The lying and betraying was always redundant and I just couldn’t stand it anymore. I wasn’t going to stand there and wait for you to be next.” I told him defeated. “Let him send someone after me for my “betrayal”, I don’t care. I won’t come back.” He looked at me sadly, “I can’t let them kill you Violet. I can’t. You have to come back with me. It’s the only way you’ll be able to live.” He looked into my eyes and pleaded with me. I fidgeted, “Look I have to get to class,” I said before walking back to my locker. I gathered my books in my arms, “I’ll talk to you later.” Then I walked into my class.

At the end of the day Dylan was waiting at my locker when I put my books away. I grabbed my bag and jacket and he walked me to my house. We didn’t talk for the majority of the walk. I could see my house when he began, “I don’t want to lose you Violet. I still love you after everything we’ve been through. He’ll put a hit out on you Vi, if he hasn’t already then soon, you know that. Please Vi, please. Come back with me.” He was practically begging me now. “Look I’ll think about it okay? Just let me think over the weekend, no distractions.” I look at him pointedly, “I’ll give you my final answer on Monday morning.” He looked thoughtful for a minute. Suddenly he leaned down and kissed me. I’m so glad my mom isn’t home. She would have freaked out. Dylan leaned back and touched my face. “Don’t leave me again Vi.” Then he waked away. I stood there for a moment, wondering about the haunted look in his eyes. He never had that look before and it worried me.

I did my homework and some research on Friday then I just went to sleep for the night around nine. I didn’t wake up until around noon on Saturday. I had a nightmare last night, but I can’t remember what it was about. I only know my dream-self was running from something; terrified. I thought about this while eating a bowl of cereal. What was I running from? I let it go and got on the computer for the rest of the day. On Sunday I woke up at nine and went for a walk to a long ago deserted playground. I sat on a swing slowly swinging back and forth, just thinking. I was thinking about what Dylan had said and his tortured expression on Friday afternoon. And why did he kiss me? With all this going through my mind I didn’t notice the hours passing by. when I came out of my thoughts it was past one. I stood up to leave, checking my pockets to make sure I had my phone. I was almost out of the playground when I heard Dylan’s voice calling my name. I turned to the sound of his voice and saw him running toward me with a frightened look on his face. He screamed for me to run. Immediately I turned to my right and ran seeing the glint of the sun off of metal on my left. I didn’t get far when I heard a loud noise and felt a sharp pain rip through my back. I gasp and fall to the ground. I didn’t even hit the grass before Dylan had me in his arms. “I’m so sorry Violet; I didn’t know they were coming today. I knew it was soon, but when I found out it was already too late.” He bowed his head to where it was resting on mine. Now I know why he had that haunted look in his eyes and the kiss… he jolted me a bit and I winced from the pain. I was starting to loose feeling in my arms. “I’m sorry Violet, so so sorry. I love you. This is all my fault; if only I had found you sooner.” He was sobbing, “I know you love me Dyl. I love you too. It’s not your fault. If I wouldn’t have left they wouldn’t of had to chase me down. just so you know, I wasn’t coming back with you.” I closed my eyes intending to let the pain have me but just before I lost consciousness I heard his voice, “I know Vi, I was going to leave them to be with you.” I wish I could’ve lived to be with him in the free world, away from the gang. That was my last thought before everything faded to black and I let my eyes slide closed listening to his sobbing and sirens in the background.
