Chapter 16

Raiden

Grenagon’s form of government is an absolute monarchy. The King holds supreme authority over the realm. There are customs and laws in place but easily manipulated by the King himself. The position can only be gain by hereditary descendants thus maintaining the pureblood line.

Although the King holds the absolute power to the realm, he does maintain a cabinet filled with specialized government officials. These specialized government officials offer insight to the political issues in our realm. They provide guidance and information when needed.

I know what I have done.

I have done the inexcusable.

Falling head over heels for a human woman and bringing her secretly into our realm will cause chaos, but I do not regret it. The fact that the next King to take the throne will finally defile the bloodline with human blood has never been heard of. Dragon Kings are born strong and with pure dragon blood running through their veins.

If I was given another chance to do it again. I would without hesitation. She is worth it.

This leaves me in a bit of a dilemma. My father’s blood flows through me without a doubt. The prevailing power of the Dragon inside of me reflects that very fact. I’ve been told I look a lot like him. It is one of the reasons why he has accepted me as his son and taken me away from my mother.

But that is all we share. We are nothing alike. All my life, I’ve lived under the principle that I will become King someday. My father never misses in reminding me. There is an expectation that I need to follow like the fathers before me.

At this moment, he sits before me in his studies. The room is usually darker than any other rooms. He like the quiet environment and the curtains hanging from the windows to be closed. His head was buried in many paperwork. When he heard me come in, he set aside his pen, crossed his arms and leaned back.

“I called for your presence because there is an urgent matter I need to speak to you about.” He started. “Song’s father approached me the other day. His daughter is completely smitten with you.”

My father quietly regarded me for a reaction. I gave him none. I locked my jaw and counted in my head to control the beast inside of me.

When he received no reaction from me, he saw it fit to continue.

“What do you think of her?” He prodded, still quietly regarding me.

“She’s like a sister to me.” I replied and my voice didn’t waver. It showed no emotions.

My father chuckled darkly, “She won’t be your sister if you took her to bed, Raiden. I swear if it wasn’t for that face, I would question if you were my son.”

He rubbed his chin and there was this devious glint in his eyes as if he was plotting something horrible. Unfortunately for my father, I do not share the same sentiment as he does. He thinks that by tying me to Song I will learn to love her. Little does he know about love. He treated my mother like a rag. After he was done using her, he tossed her aside.

My stepmother hated my mother and every female Dragon that my father had slept with. I can see it in her eyes. The way she looks at me like I am defiled and nobody will want me. The lies that she spins through her lips can easily be mistaken for kindness. I’ve learned since I was a child that I will never be anything more than a bastard child.

“You are not my son. Do not call me mother. If I hear it out of your mouth again, I will slap it.”

“Your mother was a w/hore.”

“You don’t deserve the throne. Ronin does. He is the rightful heir.”

She stopped talking like that once I turned thirteen and knew better. She was afraid father will find out and that when I become King she will be thrown out.

My hands tightened on the chair but my expression remain unreadable. My father realized I didn’t return his humor and let out another sigh. He leaned forward and propped his elbows on his desk.

“You need to start courting the female Dragon. She will make a fine Queen. People love her. She’s sweet.” My father encouraged.

“I can’t.” I told him.

His eyes glowed orange and I knew he was getting irritated with me.

“Why not? Is there something I am not aware of? In all my years, I have not seen you touch a single female Dragon. Ronin has touched his fair share of females yet you have yet to touch one.”

He was sneering. His eyes glaring back at me. I refuse to let his temper get to me.

“The answer is simple. I do not love her. Our feelings are not mutual. If I am going to choose my Queen, she will be someone that I can stand next to. Someone I care and love-”

My father chuckled again but it didn’t reach his angry eyes. It was shallow and dark.

“Love does not need to come into the equation right away. Song is a beautiful! It won’t take long after you two mate before your mark shows on her skin.” He tried once again.

“I’m not going to mate with Song.” I said in a low tone. My voice wavering with my own irritation. I slipped and showed emotion.

My father’s hand slammed against the table breaking the attempt at compromising. Things rattled and fell off his desk. He stood up on his feet and stared me down. His eyes glowing red, his teeth sharpening and elongating.

“You will do as I say.” He snarled.

I stood up to meet his eyes, “You have no control over me what I want with my life.”

“You thought wrong! You are my son. You will do as I say.” He roared.

My fingers dug into my palms, pain extruded from the piercing of my own claws.

“I will do what I want with my life.” I emphasized, holding my ground.

In a flash, he clawed my right cheek. Pain hit me and the smell of blood hit the tense air. Blood dripped from the wound. He disappeared from behind the desk and appeared in front of me in seconds. His hand put me in a choke hold. Squeezing tightly.

“I will remove you from inheriting the throne!” He threatened with a roar.

“Then do it.” I tossed back at him. My own eyes glowing red now. My hands are fisted at my side. Yet, I still maintain some kind of control. His grip was tight on my neck. Our dominance rippled between us in waves.

After a moment, he blinked and pushed me away from him.

“Her father has connections in the trading division. He has earned recognition for his brilliance and brought honor to his family for all that he has done to Grenagon.” He was furious with me now but pulled back enough to speak calmly again.

Grenagon is well known for their agriculture. Our realm has rich soil that prove enhance our agriculture growth. Most of our realm trading and revenue come from selling our silk, rice, and vegetables. Song’s father manages that division.

I didn’t respond. My father stopped talking but continued to glare at me.

After a long pregnant moment, he spoke again.

“She’s coming to see you today. You will have dinner with us and if you disobey me, you won’t like what I would do next.” He proclaimed with a threatening tone.

I clenched my jaw. I couldn’t argue with this. My father can do bad things when he is angry and with Anna sleeping in my wing, I couldn’t risk it.

“You can get out of my face. I do not want to see you until I have calmed down.” He dismissed me angrily.

I turned on my feet and walked out of the study. Underneath his attention, I was able to hold everything back but as soon as I was out of his sight. The full leash of my anger oozed like an overflow boiling pot.

When I was in the room I was sleeping in. I allowed my fury to blind me temporarily while holding a small grasp onto it. In seconds, the neat and untainted room was tattered with broken vases and furnitures, torn curtains and covers.

Although it was mid-day, A glance outside the window that now had ripped curtains, the sea was dark--pitch black, not a single creature in sight. Angry, I lifted my fist and slammed it against the wall, cracking it under impact.
