Chapter 17

Raiden

My hands are bloodied and blood seeped from the wounds on my knuckles and hands to the floor. The bedroom was completely destroyed and darkness filled the room with my mood. My hands stung in pain but it did nothing to ease the emptiness inside of me. I feel like a thousand needles have been carefully inserted underneath my skin and every time I move, pain consumes me.

I allowed myself to be taken alive by my demons. The miserable darkness that I hold at bay, came crashing through the wall like it was shattered glass. It pierced and raged inside of me bringing me to my knees.

No gold or imperial home can suffice what I sought most. I closed my eyes tightly to stop the tears from slipping. My hands curling into fists. My fingers digging into the palms of my flesh.

Memories of my lacerating past flashed in my mind. It replayed without a stop button. I couldn’t pause or stop the pain even if I could. Years of being pushed aside. Years of nothing but accusations and indictment for crimes I never did. The only thing I did wrong was being born into this wretched world.

On my knees, I pounded my fist over and over into the hard marble flooring. It was gruesome but...

Anything.

Anything other than what I am feeling now.

I veered my fist down only to have it grabbed by a pair of soft tiny hands. I opened my eyes to see Anna May kneeling before me. Her worried eyes sought mine and searched for what ailed me.

“Raiden,” She whispered.

The area between her eyebrows creased with concern. She was concerned for me. It was something I have never experienced before. Her almond cinnamon colored eyes glimmered even in this darkness of mine. The eyes are the gateway to someone’s soul. They were a deep pool of restless daylight, an ocean of hope and kindness.

As I looked into her eyes I knew, all the beauty of this universe could not even hope to compete with this simple woman before me. Compassion turned her almond cinnamon colored irises into orbs of the brightest light, and in them I found relief. Her compassion and kindness made her all the more beautiful like a goddess. A goddess I am more than willing to drop to my knees for.

She directed her eyes to my fisted hand that was wrapped in her hands. A strand of hair fell over her forehead and without thinking I lifted my other hand and smoothed it back behind her ear. She looked back up at me.

“Are you okay?” She asked.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. No one had ever asked me that.

Ever since returning, she had removed all pieces of jewelry save the necklace I gave her. It never fails to amaze me. Her beauty. It strikes me like river’s ice at the touch of spring--so beautiful as it sparkles underneath the glowing sun.

When she stared at me intently, I realized I haven’t spoken. Blinking, I turned away from her. I pulled my hand back but she refused. She tugged it back which caused me to look back at her in silent surprise.

Ever so slowly, the darkness pulled away. Light shed the room. She looked around her before turning her eyes back to me. Her eyes dipped to my wounded cheek.

“What happened to you?” She whispered the question but I can see it that the question really directed at me. More like she was mumbling to herself.

“Let me help you clean-”

“You don’t have to.” I finally spoke, my voice rough with all kinds of emotions.

She seemed to be startled at my voice. Her eyes searching my face for anything else but I masked the turmoil inside of me.

“The wounds will get infected. We need to clean you up.” She insisted.

I shook my head, “They will heal in a few hours.”

She stopped, a frown marring her dainty innocent face.

“How?” She questioned but then seemed to answer her own question. She shook her head and continued, “Dragon, right.”

She conceded and dropped to her knees before me. My eyes followed her like a lost puppy. She released my hands and moved to smooth back my hair to get a better look at my face.

Her touch was anesthetic to my pain. I closed my eyes briefly before speaking up.

“What are you doing here, Anna?” I asked.

She seemed to realize what she was doing because she dropped her hands from me. I opened my eyes to find her looking out the window that was slowly turning back to azure blue.

“The fishes were gone.” And I couldn’t help smiling. She came to me because she knew I was feeling angry but just as quick as the smile appeared, it disappeared the minute she turned back to me.

“What do you want me to do?” She offered and my heart thumped dangerously against my ribcage.

“Stay,” I answered. Her presence seemed to keep my demons at bay.

She nodded and together, her and I sat in the destroyed bedroom. She didn’t move. She didn’t speak. Only sat there and allowed me to gaze upon her beauty.

I’m a wretched selfish man. I took her away from her family and into my world. I am willing to give her everything yet here she is asking for nothing. I feel powerless around her.

She smoothed some strands of hair back behind her ear before biting her bottom lips. My eyes dropped to that one single move and I couldn’t wait to kiss her. I dropped my eyes lower and saw that my dragon mark on her stomach was slowly turning into a dark red color. The color of my dragon. A sense of possessiveness washed over me and I knew for a fact that I can’t ever let her go.

How can I? When she is the light to my darkness. She’s the Angel to demise. She’s my refuge when I needed to find my way back again.

“Thank you,” I said and her eyes flitted back to me.

She nodded and glanced around the room before returning it to me.

“You destroyed this room.” She asked and it was my turn to look at what I did.

The whole room was completely destroyed. No furniture or cloth was left in any kind of shape. Glass and vases shattered on the ground. It was then I noticed she came over in barefoot.

I frowned and my eyebrows furrowed. I am upset. She shouldn’t have come in here like this.

“You aren’t wearing any shoes.” I pointed out. She wiggled her toes and then gave me a half grin.

“I was in a hurry to come to see you.” She said in a timid voice.

And just like that my anger melted. This woman has more control over me than I thought. Her innocent replies were like tidal waves, catching me off my feet and drowning me. At this rate, she will stop my heart before I could even kiss those plump peachy lips.

“Anna...why do you do this? Why do you break me and fix me all at once?” I breathed, one bloody hand coming up to cup her cheek, slowly.

Her eyes fell on my hand before meeting my eyes. In them, I swam to shore. She inhaled softly when she felt my hands touch her cheek. She didn’t recoil and it encouraged me to lean forward. I pressed my forehead against hers. I could smell the scent of the cherry blossoms we picked for bath faintly on her skin. It was addicting and I couldn’t resist brushing my lips against her forehead.

“I didn’t do anything...” She said innocently.

I chuckled and again pressed my forehead against hers. When I opened my eyes, I found her watching me.

“You should laugh more.” She blurted out and realized she just admitted to liking my laugh, she pulled back from my touch.

She stood and her ruby sheer glitter skirt fell around her feet. There are a few things I have learned about this woman before me. Her eyes are windows to her soul but her mind is as stubborn as a mule. I can see she is attracted to me but I know she fights it. That doesn’t stop me from swelling with pride and protectiveness when I saw that my mark on her is growing quicker.

“I think you should sleep in your room again.” She said. “It is only right. I have spent enough time there. I think it is about time I found my own room.”

The thought of her sleeping somewhere else besides my bed didn’t sit well with me.

“I’ll sleep in another room,” I told her.

She shook her head, “Please, you should sleep-”

“There is no use in arguing with me. You will sleep only in my bed.” I took a step forward and she took one large step back. Unfortunately, she didn’t see the broken bed frame behind her and went falling back.

I wrapped both arms around her and pulled her close to me, “Are you okay?”

Again, she bit her bottom lip and nodded. Having her so close, so near. It heated my body in a different kind of way. I visibly gulped in front of her before releasing her. She let out another yelp at my sudden release and went tumbling onto my body. Caught off guard, I fell onto my back and her on top of me

Lord have mercy on me.

I can feel every single soft curve and her breasts pressed against me. This was just like the tormenting night at Huisong. Her eyes landed on mine and I watched those widened almond cinnamon eyes dip to my lips.

Immediately, my body reacted and I can feel myself become hard. I pushed her off me and she went tumbling to the ground beside me with an ‘oof’.

“I have a dinner tonight. After I am done, I am wondering if I can come to visit you?” I asked.

She looked up from her position and it looked like she was irritated with me for pushing off me but I didn’t know how to handle all this. She was the first woman I have ever reacted this way to.

“If you want me to bite your head off.” She mumbled before standing up again.

I smirked, “Maybe I do.”

“Then you are more than welcome to visit me.” She offered before stomping out of the room. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair as what is to come next bathe me in misery once again.

I don’t know what I am doing. I have no intentions whatsoever of having Song as a mate or my chosen but my father’s wrath was one worth considering as well. I rubbed a hand over my face in frustration before heading to the washroom to clean up.
