Chapter 9

When we arrived at the wedding venue it was magnificent with its cultural and architectural building. The landscape of the villa was crisp and clean with an outside pool. The environment was warm and inviting. When we entered inside, it was even more breathtaking than outside. It will be where we will be staying a week before the wedding. Again, all expenses paid for by my dear lovely cousin Emery and Ronald.

“Are you sure your mom won’t freak out with you dressed like that?” Axel asked for the second time.

A broad smile appeared on my face because I don’t give a fuck what she thinks. I was dressed in Axel’s t-shirt and a pair of black leggings I brought with me. My hair was tied into a messy bun.

Pushing my sunglasses up the bridge of my nose I answered him, “She will be pissed off but I don’t give a fuck.”

Axel smirked, “I didn’t realize you had a rebellious streak.”

“I tolerate her because she’s my mother but I know when she passed the line,” I told him. “For today, I’m doing what I want.”

I forgot to mention, I stopped by the gift shop in the hotel and bought myself shoes. My mother will be livid.

When we reached the pool area, everyone was there drinking wine and laughing in their own little group. My mother was talking to Aunt Carol but when she saw me, her eyes narrowed to slits.

Immediately, she made her way towards me. Ronald came to pull Axel away from me. So, I was again alone.

“What the hell are you wearing?” My mother barely swears. She only does it when she was extremely pissed off.

She still kept a fake smile on her face as she hissed me that question.

“I thought I told you-”

“Yes, but I wasn’t feeling so well and you asked me to come anyway. I’m going to wear something comfortable and I don’t care what anyone thinks.” I interrupted her, looking her square in the eyes.

“If you think to embarrass me in front of everyone, you better consider it again. I will not let my only daughter look like a fool.” She snapped.

“Look around you, mom. Nobody cares. Everyone is so busy looking at this place and sucking up to the bride and groom they don’t give a fuck what I wear.” Her and I both took a quick glance. She straightened her shoulder prepared to win this fight but before she could say anything a man appeared in our periapical vision. We both turned to him. My mom didn’t waste a second to change her facade.

“Mrs. Friedman, this must be your daughter.” His thick English brogue interrupted our mini argument.

“Yes, “My mother glanced at me. ” this is Ryleigh.”

“It is a pleasure to finally meet you. My name is Maximilian but you can call me Max.” He put a hand out for me to shake. My mother kept a plastered fake smile on her face as she pinched my behind to be nice.

I shook his hand.

“Nice to meet you,” I muttered.

“Your mother tells me you are a librarian.” He asked.

I nodded, “I enjoy the quiet ambiance.”

Maximilian’s hair looks soft to the touch. Its light brown lock shined underneath the sun. He had a nice tan going. He was handsome but nothing compared to Axel.

He smirked, “Did you get a chance to taste the wine here?”

It was an invitation to join him. Again my mother pinched my butt. I clenched my teeth in irritation. I took one small step away before answering.

“No, I have not but I have to find someone. I will be right back.” I gave him the best apologetic smile I could before slipping away.

I went in search of Axel and found him next to Emery and Ronald. He was talking to another woman who could very well look like a Victoria Secret model. Her tan skin and thick long black hair. She had on a creme colored form-fitting dress that reached her knee. I, on the other hand, had mid-length dry brown hair and skin so pale no one would guess I lived in southern California.

Axel had on a smile. They were speaking in Spanish and laughing. The woman eyes were bright and completely eyeballing him. Something inside of me twist and I felt jealousy.

"Si, vivo en el sur de California.” Axel grinned and the woman moved to touch his arms. She said something back in Spanish.

"Lo hago cuando puedo pero entre el trabajo y Ryleigh, apenas tengo tiempo.” He answered her.

Feeling like a fifth wheel, I walked to the other side of the pool. A waiter came by and I took two glasses of wine. He glanced at me weirdly before moving on.

Sitting in a lounge chair, I downed one wine glass as I started at Axel and the other three. Bitterness crawled and ate at my inside. I hated that feeling and so I drowned it out with shooting down another glass of wine.

Another waiter came and I took another glass from him.

I’m completely puzzled. Axel wasn’t mine but why was I behaving as if he was. It irked me that he was speaking to another woman.

His eyes scanned the area. I saw his eyes land on my mother before he frowned and continue looking for something. He excused himself from the group and started walking around the pool.

He was dressed a little bit better than me. In black dress pants, clean leather shoes and a white dress shirt that was unbuttoned at the top.

I sipped my wine and when his eyes found me he walked over.

“Finally, decided to find me,” I muttered bitterly.

“I thought you were with your mom but when I looked and saw you weren’t I came looking for you.” He replied, standing before me with his hands in his pockets.

“Well, thanks for the added backup.” Still feeling angry at seeing him with another woman.

“What’s wrong?” He asked. He looked confused.

“Nothing.” I bit back before lifting the glass of wine to my lips but he stopped me.

“Is that really a good idea, Hermosa?” He asked. “You remember last night right.”

I huffed before getting out of my seat. I started walking away but he grabbed onto only my elbow.

“Something is bothering you and I know it. I can see it burning in your eyes, Ryleigh.” He said.

I huffed again, “It’s fine.”

“Tell me. I can’t help you if you won’t speak to me.” He insisted, pulling me back to face him. He grabbed onto both of my arms and lower his eyes to meet mine.

“It’s nothing.”

“My mama raised me right. She told me when a woman says its nothing, it is never nothing. Now tell me what’s on your mind.”

“Ugh! I don’t want to talk about it.” I tried to wiggle out of his arms. He pulled me closer and wrapped his arms around me.

“Axel!” I snapped.

“Nope, if you are not telling me, I am perfectly fine keeping you in my arms.” He protested.

“God, why don’t you go back and talk to that woman again.” I bit out.

For a moment he looked confused but then he grinned, like a happy grin.

“Are you jealous?” He was happy.

“Oh, you think this is funny,” I said in an irritated tone.

“Actually, I do. I like it when you are jealous.” He smirked. “Guess you aren’t so immune to my charms after all.”

I glared at him, “I get it. I’m not like that girl. She’s pretty when I don’t even compare to her. I have to remind myself that you and I aren’t dating for real. That you will always be the hot-I-can-get-anybody kind of guy.”

“Seriously?” Now it was his turn to sound angry. “Why are you being like this?”

“Forget it.” I shook my head. I felt stupid.

"No sabes lo hermosa que eres." He said in an angered tone.

I don’t know what he said angrily in Spanish but I heard Hermosa so it must be about me. One thing about Axel is when he gets angry he speaks in his native language a lot.

I sighed, “Whatever. Do what you want.”

"Tu. Te quiero a ti pero ni siquiera puedes verlo.”

He grabbed me by my cheeks and pulled me in for a kiss. His lips smashing over mine in an angry fit. It surprised me so much that my lips parted on their own accord. He took full advantage of that. His tongue slipped in and explored my mouth like how he did at the hotel. A groan rumbled from the back of his throat when he got a taste of me. This kiss was angry and punishing but at the same time desperate and hungry. Butterflies erupted in the pit of my stomach and the glass cup dropped from my hand, shattering on the ground.

It broke our kiss and we both looked down at what I did. After we saw the shattered glasses, he looked back up at me. His lips swollen from kissing mine. I touched my lips faintly and his eyes darkened as my finger traced where his lips just were.

Why did he kiss me?

“Are you guys okay?” Brandon appeared and pushed me slightly away from the glass. The workers came to clean it up.

I felt like my body was going into shock. I still can’t believe Axel kissed me again.

My heart hammering in my chest. I watched my brother clean up my mess and Axel speak to the workers in Spanish.
