I picked up my cell and just looked at it again and then I found myself and got in to action. I ran to my mothers bedroom, "Mom, wake up. I need you to watch Sam. He is sleeping." I said.
"What's wrong?" She asked me.
"I don't know know, Hunter needs me he is down at the hospital. I've got to go." I said. She nodded her head at me and I ran back to my room. I threw on some clothes and grabbed my car keys and took off as fast as I could. I reached the hospital and parked in the no parking zone. I just didn't care at that moment. I ran inside and started looking for Hunter. I found him siting on the ground against the wall. He was covered in blood. My hands went to my face and I saw his covered in tears. I ran over to hid side. I went to my knees and placed my hands on him. He looked up at me. I don't think I've ever seen Hunter look like this. In all the years I've known him. "Hunter, what happened?" I asked softly. He just looked at me and more tears fell down his face. I helped him to his feet and we walked over to some seats. "Hunter, talk to me." I pleaded with him.
"Things were fine. I mean things were great actually. We went to bed just like any other normal night. She woke me up in pain. I thought maybe it was time and I got up and turned the lights on. I went to grab our bag for the hospital and that's when I looked over at her. She was covered in blood and I called the ambulance. She bleed out on the way to the hospital. They couldn't stop the bleeding. She was gone when we got here. They tried to get my daughter out of her in time, but they were to late. I lost them both." He said. Oh my god. I said to myself. Hunter went into tears again and I pulled him to me. I held onto him while he cried.
"I'm so sorry Hunter." I said as I rocked him back and forth. He wrapped his arms around me and just lost it. He was completely alone here. Blair's family had shown up, but Hunter had no one. I just sat there and held onto him. "I wont let you go Hunter, I'm here." I said. He sobbed more. Since Hunter and Blair were not married. All final decisions were left to her parents. They were good people has they let Hunter decide what should be done. I don't think he really knew what he was doing. He signed all the paper work and it was time to leave the hospital. Hunter asked the doctors if he could see them before we left. He asked me to wait outside the room while he said his goodbyes. I waited patiently for Hunter. Blair's parents told me thank you for being here for Hunter. I said goodbye as they all let the hospital. I couldn't believe what was going on. This was crushing him and I was powerless to stop it. He is going to need someone to help him though this. I knew that someone was going to be me.
While Hunter was still in the room. I called my mother and told her what was going on. I told her I was going to bring Hunter home with me and asked her if she could go pick up Tim and bring him to the house. Hunter was going to need his son around. My mother agreed and I hung up with her just as Hunter came out f the room. I stood next to him being available for whatever it was that he needed. He took a deep breath and leaned against the wall. Tears were still falling down his face. I walked over to him and reached my hand out for his. "Come on Hunter, let's go." I said. He took my hand and I lead him out to my car.
"Where are we going Chloe?" Hunter asked me.
"I'm taking you back to my mothers with me." I said.
"I want to go home." He said. I reached over and touched his hand. He moved it away from me.
"Please Hunter, just come with me tonight." I said. He just sat there not saying a word, looking out the window. "Fine, if I'm taking you home I'm going with you." I said.
"I don't want you to." He said.
"This is not up for discussion. You pick the place, but no matter what place you pick. I'm going to be there." I said sternly. I heard him take a deep breath. "Where to?" I asked.
"Home." He said. I drove us both back to his house. He got out of the car and headed straight inside. I took a deep breath and followed him. He walked down the hallway and passed Tim's room. He went inside the room at the end of the hall and slammed the door shut. I stopped at his bedroom door and saw the blood covered bed. I decided to give Hunter some time alone and clean up everything the best I could. I tossed the sheets and blankets away. I got out rug cleaner and cleaned the mattress. I even scrubbed the floors all the way out to the front door. I stopped at the bathroom and washed my hands and looked in the mirror.
That's when I lost it myself. I started to cry and my heart was braking for Hunter. I didn't know if he would ever be the same after this. I was so worried about him. I looked towards the room he was in and it took me a minute to move myself towards the door. I knew in my heart what I was going to find behind that door. I just knew it was his new daughters room. That made my tears fall even more. I had to get it together for Hunter. I had my hand placed on the door knob. I stood there and took a deep breath and pushed the door open. I found Hunter sitting on the floor against the crib. He was holding onto a baby blanket. He glanced up at me and then placed his head back down. I walked into the room and closed the door behind me. I walked over to him and sat down next to him.
"Do you remember when we were around ten years old and we got lost down by the caves? I was crying and scared and you held me. You told me how everything was going to be okay because we had each other. Do you remember that? no one found us for two days. I'm here Hunter and as long as we have each other everything will be okay." I said. I slowly wrapped my arms around him. He didn't push me away. He leaned his body into mine and I just held him. I couldn't help my tears that fell as I heard him start to cry.
The next day I opened my eyes. We were still in the baby's room. We had fallen asleep in each others arms on the floor. Hunter was still sleeping in my arms and I didn't move. I just watched him. He looked so peaceful and the last thing I wanted to do was wake him. I squeezed him just a little tighter. I brushed his hair from his beautiful face. He took a deep breath and opened his red eyes to me. He gave me his beautiful smile that I loved and then I saw the reality took over and his sadness was back. I smiled at him and kissed his forehead. He stayed in my arms and I held onto him.
I packed up some of Hunter and Tim's thing and we headed out to my mothers house. I had talked him into staying with us for awhile. I didn't want him to be alone. I let him know I was staying at my mothers for awhile and I didn't want him alone. The funeral was in two days and we were all going. I promised Hunter I was going to be by his side as long as he needed me. I was just finishing getting ready for the funeral when my mother poked her head in the bathroom.
"Hunter walked off towards the ocean." She said. I nodded at her and left to find him. He was standing at the waters edge.
"Hunter?" I said.
"It's beautiful don't you think?" He asked me. I came up beside him and took his hand in mine. His eyes were on the water.
"Yes, you know I've always thought so." I said.
"What happened to us Chloe? There was a time when you and I were inseparable. Here we are now with much tragedy that had gone on between us and were still stuck in the middle. Why?" Hunter asked.
"I don't know why things happen the way they do. I just try to live each day the best I can." I said.
"I feel like I'm being punished for something." he said. "Ever since you left me back in high school. Things have gone to shit." He said. "I'm only ever okay when your near me."
"I'm sorry Hunter, I didn't want to go. I was forced to go. I'm sorry I forgot you. I'm sorry I started a family without you. I'm sorry." Was all I could get out. I felt his arm go around me. He pulled me into him. We stood there just holding on to each other.
The funeral was sweet and Blair and the baby were buried next to each other. After people started to leave Hunter stayed behind in his seat. I helped my mother get the kids into the car. I told her we would be along shortly. I walked back out to Hunter. I sat down next to him. He turned and looked at me, he smiled and looked back to the ground.
"I'm okay." He said.
"I know you are." I said. "Did you love her?" I asked him.
"I think maybe I did. She was good to me and I was good to her. We were both very excited when we found out we were having a girl. She wanted to call her Melinda. I didn't care for the name so much, but that's what we started to call her." Hunter said. I smiled at him.
"I think Melinda is a pretty name for her." I said. He touched the top of my hand.
"Let's go okay?" He said. I nodded at him and we both got up and headed back to the car. I was finishing up dinner and I could see Hunter in the living room playing with Tim and Sam. They had legos all over the living room. I just smiled at them and continued dinner. We all ate outside on the back porch. It was nice and warm this night. Hunter and my mother cleaned up the dinner and I stayed outside sipping on some tea.
"Have you heard from Cooper lately?" I heard my mother ask.
Nope, but it's okay. I know he is busy." I said. My mother sat down next to me.
"How are you doing?" She asked me. I took a deep breath. I felt very tired and worried.
I'm okay, I'm still pretty worried about Hunter. He is putting on a brave face, but I'm still worried about him." I said.
"Hunter is a strong man Chloe. He will be okay." She said. I knew she was right and he could stay here with us for as long as he needed. My mother kissed my head and headed back inside. A few minutes later. Hunter came out onto the porch.
"Both the kids are asleep." He said.
"Thank you Hunter." I said. He sat down next to me with his beer.
"They are good together." He said. I looked over at him.
"Who?" I said.
"Tim and Sam." He said. I smiled.
"Yeah, they always have been." I said and took a sip of my tea. Hunter downed his beer. He got up and went back inside the kitchen. He returned with another beer. I looked over at him. "How many of those have you had tonight?" I asked him.
"I don't know maybe a few." He said.
"Maybe you should slow down." I said.
"Are you worried I'll get drunk Chloe?" He ask me.
"No not really. I just don't think you should drink so much." I said.
"Chloe, I'm fine." He said. I just smiled at him and went back to my tea. "Chloe, can I ask you something?" Hunter said.
"Sure." I said.
"Do you ever miss me?" He asked. I turned to face him.
"All the time." I said.
