Chapter 1: Bored to death

Secret admirer’s p.o.v.

It’s crazy when you stop and think of what we do in the name of love...

I am bored.

I was at home with my parents, but we had a family dinner and my cousins, those of my age, couldn’t make it. The little ones were either playing amongst themselves or sleeping and the adults were talking together. Including my parents. So, you see why I am sitting or lying (it’s in-between the two) here. Wondering where ‘here’ is? Well I’m in the kitchen, more precisely on the kitchen counter.

I picked up my phone to text my best friend Clara but remembered that she was on a date with her soon-to-be-boyfriend, as I called it and therefore won’t be picking up or replying anything from me, at least not any time soon.

Sighing I put my phone back down but picked it up again when I heard the notification sound. It was a notification from Instagram notifying me that Aiden Percival had posted something on his story. I opened it on his page and sighed dreamily. Gosh he was cute. How can he be this good looking but such an ass when he opens his mouth?

A few months ago, Aiden got signed as a model so now he weekly posts pictures of himself and some brands. Is he any good you might ask? The number of his followers has almost tripled since he started posting those pictures, going from 2 thousand to almost 2 million in six months.

I quickly wiped my artificial drool from my face and scrolled down. My breath hitched in my throat when I read his caption on an old pic: 'Text me cuz I’m bored 😉'. I contemplated it you know, until I remembered who I was and who I was thinking about texting. Oh, hell no! You just don’t text him unless you are super pretty, confident and rich. Well at least that was what I thought. Looking at that picture again an idea popped into my head.

What if I did? I would send him messages but not through phone because he could hire somebody to find me and that would be horrifying. That was the day that ‘Secret admirer’ had been born. I quickly went up to my room for preparations.

Monday morning:

The entire day I’ve been anxious. It’s already third period but I haven’t seen him yet and it wasn’t as if I could go to his locker. I was basically invisible and invisible people had no business next or close to his locker, but I was an exception, which at times I was happy for. No, my locker is not next to his, but it is about eight lockers away. Amazing right? No, it isn’t. I get to watch him making out every week with a new girl. There were some exceptions though, for example he went out with this girl Lori for an entire month. The whole school was buzzing about it and I overheard Lori once saying that she had changed him because he didn’t cheat on her or whatsoever. The next day they were done.

Anyways back to business. I still haven’t found out how I would drop the note in his bag, but I was happy with my seat in class. I sit a chair in front of him at the back. No, I’m not your typical nerd, who sits in front. I mean whoever said that all nerds do that, is so wrong. We also don’t raise our hands at every single question asked. Believe it or not there are some who prefer to pretend as if they don’t know it and then you have me; sometimes sleeping in class, drawing or playing dumb with the rest ‘huh?’.

Before I could let my thoughts wander off more, he came in. I sighed dreamily. I couldn’t help it, he has that effect on me, actually on all the girls. All the sudden he looked in my direction, caught me staring and before I could look away or pretend that I was staring at something else, he smiled at me. I froze and looked behind me to see if he really was smiling at me or to someone I wasn’t seeing and thus making a fool of myself if that was the case. Nope, nobody there. I turned back around to see his smile broader now. Shyly I smiled back.

The whole class had obviously watched everything, and I looked around to see all their mouths agape. Suddenly I heard a thud next to me making me snap out of my daydream and I jumped off my seat. Those were my books on the floor which had caused the thud. I looked up to find the source of the fall. Aiden, of course, why not? Wow his eyes were even bluer up close.

“What are you looking at?”(Aiden)

He didn’t even try to pick up my books or apologize for making them fall.

“Aren’t you even going to say sorry or better yet, pick my books up?”

All the sudden it became silent. So quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Aiden was looking at me as if I had grown two heads. Well, I’m sorry that I can talk back. Not.

“Hello? I am talking to you. Are you deaf or something?”

Shaking my head, I snapped back to reality. Ugh, why did I start to daydream now?

“N-Nothing.” I answered stuttering. Curse that stutter when I get nervous. He looked at me again before moving on to seat behind me and I used that opportunity to pick up my books. Then the moment I had been waiting for presented itself. He had dropped a note. I picked it up between my books and pretended as if I hadn’t noticed it was there. Quickly I took out my special note paper and started writing.

’Dear Aiden, I’ve been meaning to tell you that you have incredible blue eyes.

Oh gosh, what on earth did I just write? I scratched it and took a new paper and started afresh.

‘Dear Aiden, I’ve been meaning to tell you that I’ve been watching you. Not in a freaky stalkerish way of course, but it’s nice to see that you care about other people.’

Sincerely yours,

Your secret admirer

Simple, but so much better.

I turned to see him resting his head on his table with his eyes closed. Is he asleep or is he faking it and why hasn’t the teacher noticed it? I shook my head and glanced down to see his bag open. ‘This couldn’t be any more perfect’, I thought. I casually glanced around to see if anyone was paying attention and then dropped the note in his bag, then I went ahead to do one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever done: touching Aiden. I placed my hand on his shoulder and shook him slightly while whispering his name.

He didn’t budge but now his neighbors were starting to look at me with interest.

“Aiden”, I whispered again but this time it was a little louder.

“What?”, he snapped at me while sitting up straight and opening his eyes. His eyes seemed so dark and terrifying, but it looked good on him.

“Eh, I- no you dropped something too, when you caused my books to fall.”

“Excuse me? Who said that I dropped your books?”

I wisely ignored his question because I didn’t want any more attention than the one I was already getting.

“This note. I found t-this note between my books. It’s not mine.”

He glanced at me, then at my hands and snatched it away from me.

“Did you read it?”

“I didn’t recognize it, so I opened it but then I saw your name and I closed it again. I swear, other than your name I didn’t read anything else.”

He looked at me and opened his mouth to say something but instead he shook his head and sighed.

That was the end of it. Nothing else happened.
