I turned off my cellphone, avoiding the call distractions. It was the rehearsal dinner. Friends and family had gathered to congratulate Audrey and I, while stuffing their faces with food.
I wasn't happy about being here, but my guilt wouldn't let me leave. I had cheated on Audrey countless times just to accomplish a silly goal I had up with my friends since in high school, but that silly goal led me to a wonderful young woman. A young woman I couldn't get out of my head.
"Wouldn't you agree, Christian?" my mother asked.
"Huh?" I asked, shaking myself from my thoughts.
"To honeymoon in Paris," she answered.
"Umm, yeah, sure, why not?" I was at a lost. My head wasn't in the dinner. Audrey's hand found mine underneath the table. She was sitting right next to me.
"Are you okay?" she asked in a whisper.
"I'm great," I lied.
"So, Christian," my mother started again,"After marriage, comes the kids. You'll make some beautiful babies with Audrey."
"Mother, kids are the last thing on my mind right now. Just like this whole wedding."
The clattering stopped and every pair of eyes were on me.
"What does that supposed to mean, Christian?" my mother asked again, her voice rising with every word she shot out.
"Nothing," I answered to avoid the now building tension in the room. Oh, how I wish the ground could open and receive me now.
"You know something....I can't believe..."my mother paused between her words as she chocked.
"Something....is..stuck....in my," she tried to say.
"Don't, don't speak. I'm taking you to the hospital!" I yelled as she spat up blood. I quickly help her off the chair she was sitting on and Tim assisted me with carrying her to my Range Rover.
I stepped on the accelerator with the emergency light flashing.
"I NEED A DOCTOR!" I yelled when I rushed my mother through the hospital's entrance, carrying her slender frame bridal style.
Two nurses and a doctor ran towards me, one pushing a gurney.
"Something is stuck in her throat," I explained as I set her down on the gurney.
The doctor inspected her mouth. "Airway is blocked. Let's move her!". I watched in horror as they rushed my mother down the aisle, disappearing through double doors.
I sat down on a near-by chair in the waiting room area with my palms covering my face.
"Boss?" I heard a voice. I looked up and saw Josh.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"It's my mother. We were having dinner. Something got stuck in her throat, she couldn't breathe, she was spitting up blood," I told him.
"Oh man, that doesn't sound pretty," he said.
"What are you doing here Josh?" I asked him now.
"I came to drop something off for Sacha."
"Sacha?" My eyebrows creased in confusion.
"Yeah. She fainted earlier on today."
"Oh God," I exhaled. I felt even worse. She had been calling me and there was something she had to say to me but I shut her off without hearing her out. She wanted to tell me that she was in the hospital.
"Which room is she in?"
"Female Recovery. Room 09."
"Do you mind giving me a few minutes with her?" I asked him as I stood up.
"Sure. Go right ahead."
I found room 09 and walked in. Indeed, Sacha was on the bed, playing a game in her cellphone. Her eyes popped open wider when she saw me.
She put her phone away and turned her attention to me.
"Hey," I started.
"Hi," she answered softly.
"I saw Josh outside, he told me what happened. Sacha, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were in the hospital."
She stayed silent, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at me. I slowly walked over to her side and took her hand into mine as I stoked her cheek with my thumb.
"Are you going to be okay?"
She nodded yes.
"Good. I'm happy to hear that," I said and an awkward silence fell into the room. For once, it felt like all my worries had been washed away and I was at peace with myself.
"My mother is in here as well. She got something stuck in her throat at dinner tonight."
"Oh. I hope she'll be okay."
"Yeah, me too."
"Christian, there's something you ought to know and help me to make a discussion on because I can't do this on my own or without you knowing about it." There was a serious expression on her face.
"Oh, you mean besides you fainting?"
"It's what caused me to faint," she said and began fidgeting with her fingers.
"What is it?" I didn't like the sound of things.
"Visiting time is over," a doctor said as she entered the room.
"Doctor, please, five more minutes. This is the guy," Sacha told her.
"Christian Alexander!" the female doctor turned to me with her mouth opened and she froze as if doing the mannequin challenge, "Okay, five more minutes," she finished and left the room.
"What was that all about?" I asked Sacha.
"Christian, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry," she cried. The tears wet her beautiful face and my heart hurt as they did. I spotted a box of tissues on a small table and handed several to her.
"Sacha, what is it?" I asked again.
"I'm pregnant," she whispered but I caught it.
It took a minute for her words to register. "Pregnant?" I thought back at our encounters.
When did I ejaculated inside of her?
Oh right! The back seat of my car, almost a month ago when I ended things.
"Oh man," I almost shouted and I started pacing the room back and forth. I was lost for words. I couldn't think. I couldn't wake up for this dream because it wasn't one.
"Christian, you don't have to fret about this. We can have an abortion. Nobody has to know. We can just get rid of the baby and you can move on with your wedding and never have to see each other again."
"To hell with that Sacha! You're not getting rid of my unborn child so please shut up about abortion!"
"But this baby would change everything! Your life, your career, your image, your name in the media," she said.
"You think I give a damn about that?"
I wasn't ready to be a father. I had other plans in life than being a father but sometimes things happen, and you've got to reschedule and adapt. I couldn't bring myself to let Sacha abort my own offspring inside of her, despite the circumstances facing us.
Audrey would just have to deal with it.
How would Audrey deal with it? Find out in the next Chapter.
