Chapter 15

Storm watched Talya as the days progressed, looking out for symptoms while keeping her as comfortable as possible. They talked about the possibility of the pregnancy, as her symptoms became more pronounced. Nausea was a constant companion and her breasts were achy and enlarged. She was also more tired than usual and just that morning she had reached out for Jason when she had felt the room spinning head over heels around her.

She had to be pregnant, right.

“You do know that I will become fat and unattractive if I am pregnant.” Talya warned as they sat cuddling on the couch.

“I will still love and adore you.”

“I might go completely off sex for the whole nine months of the pregnancy.”

“Oh, that’s going to be a problem.” Storm replied.

“Well you should have thought about that before you married me.”

“I think I’ll survive, but you’re such a nymph... you sure you’re going to be able to go without for that long?” Storm teased.

“I miss you already, Jay.” Talya whispered.

“Honey, I want you too.” Storm said turning to kiss her.

“Another two days before we know.” Talya said.

Storm placed his hand on her womb. “Another two days, my sweet.”

To lighten the mood, Storm got up and pulled Talya into his arms. “Dance with me.”

“But there’s no music.”

“We don’t need music.” Storm smiled as he gently swayed with her.

They spend the rest of the evening talking about the changes they would have to make if, and when the pregnancy was confirmed.

Saturday morning arrived and Talya felt like she had been waiting for this moment all her life. Nausea made her run to the bathroom a dozen times. She was terrified of the results despite the symptoms she had been having. Storm was with her. She told him, “Please don’t be too disappointed if the results are negative.”

“Shh, love.” Storm said.

“Promise me, you’ll be okay.”

“I promise Talya. You need to calm down.”

“I know,” Talya said. “But I can’t.”

Storm hugged her close and let her express her fears. His gut told him they had nothing to fear. But then again this wasn’t a Goddamn case. This was their baby!

A pathologist arrived to draw the blood sample. Talya was so nervous and couldn’t watch.

“We’ll have the results within the next hour,” The pathologist said before leaving the room.

“Oh Jay… I don’t know what I’ll do if it’s negative…”

“Shh.” Storm held her close as nervous excitement mixed with terror raced through them. The next hour seemed to drag on forever.

Finally, a nurse told them Dr Coleman was ready to see them. They entered her office and waited as she finished a call.

“Talya, Storm I’ve just received your results.” Dr Coleman said as she pulled a results sheet out of a folder.

“What does it say?” Storm demanded.

“Am I pregnant?” Talya asked.

Teddy entered the lab and stopped. Lebo sipped noisily out of a large plastic cup. Her eyes were glued to her desktop phone, next to which there were four more large plastic cups.

“Did you drink all of that this morning?” he asked looking at his watch.

Lebo nodded.

“You’re not going to sleep for a week with that much caffeine running through your veins.”

“What?” Lebo looked as if only then realizing that he was there, speaking to her. “Oh Teddy, the waiting is killing me!”

The lab doors opened again and Mike stepped in.

“No news yet?” Mike asked.

“No.” Lebo replied.

“How long do these tests take anyway?” Mike asked.

“Results on a qualitative HCG test are usually out within an hour of the blood sample being taken.” Lebo said.

“What time were they seeing Dr Coleman?” Teddy asked as the lab doors opened again.

“8am, I believe.” Dr Singh said.

“So it’s been about an hour now.” Teddy said.

“We should be hearing something soon, then” Mike said.

“Yes, Talya promised to call me as soon as they knew.” Lebo said. “But what if she is too upset to call?”

“Now, now Lebo. We should not jump to conclusions.” Manie said, patting Lebo on the shoulder just as the lab doors swished open again.

“I thought I might find all of you here.” Amanda said.

“Have you heard anything?” Lebo asked.

“No,” Amanda replied. “And I don’t expect to for at least another hour or so.”

“Why?” Mike asked.

“Because, whatever the news may be, Jason and Talya will need time to absorb it. Therefore, I suggest everyone get back to work now. As soon as anyone hears anything, we will convene in my office and share the news.” Amanda said before she turned and left the lab.

“The Director is right.” Matthews said.

“I know.” Lebo replied.

“I’m going out to get coffee.” Mike said. “Call me when you hear anything.”

“Get me another one, will you?” Lebo said to his retreating back.

“Actually my dear, I do believe you have had more than enough. Why don’t you join me for a cup of tea, rather?” Manie said leading Lebo out of the lab.

“I sure hope it’s going to be good news.” Teddy said when he was alone in the lab.

Back in Dr Coleman’s office, the tension was palpable.

“Doctor?” Storm demanded.

“Just give me a moment, Agent Storm.” Dr Coleman said as she scanned the report.

“Jay....” Talya squeezed his hand tightly. She was on the verge of tears. The question was would they be tears of joy, or tears of sorrow?

“Talya,” Dr Coleman said a smile on her face. “Congratulations, you are pregnant.”

Jason and Talya sat still, frozen in that moment. Talya could hear her every heartbeat, her vision blurred as tears flowed, and her mouth was open as she struggled to draw a breath. Jason’s face broke out into the most amazing smile. His eyes sparkled with unbridled joy. He pulled Talya close, hugging her, kissing her face and repeating how much he loved her.

Was this really happening! Was this real? Could it really be...?

The world seemed to have tilted on its axis... and black spots danced in front of her eyes.

“Take deep breathes Talya.” Dr Coleman’s words broke through to her. She was now lying on her back, her legs elevated by pillows, Jason kneeling next to her, stroking her hair.

“Did I faint?” she asked.

“You did.” he replied, smiling adorably.

“Oh.... Jay.... Did she say,” Talya swallowed against the lump in her throat. “Did she say I’m pregnant?”

‘She did.” Jason smiled. “We are going to have a baby!”

“Oh God… Oh God…. Oh my God!” Talya smiled, even as tears streaked down her cheeks.

Storm took her hand and placed it over her pelvis.

“We are having a baby,” he said in awe.

“We are having a baby!” Talya shouted and laughed as she wrapped her hands around his neck and pulled him close for a deep kiss. It was only the sound of Dr Coleman clearing her throat, which drew them apart.

When they were both seated on the couch, Dr Coleman said, “I’d like you to come in for a scan in a week’s time. We should be able to see your baby then. Now all I want you to do is relax. You are likely to feel tired and the nausea will continue for the next few weeks. Also no strenuous activities and no field work.”

Storm looked at Talya and was glad when she nodded at Dr Coleman’s instructions.

As they left her office, they thanked Dr Coleman for everything she had done for them.

Storm was so excited and so happy, he decided to take Talya straight home. Both of them were smiling and laughing. Talya was about to head upstairs. But Jason had other plans. He led her to the guest bedroom on the ground floor.

“Jay?” She asked once he forced her to sit on the bed.

“I’ve been working on something.” He said as he opened the cupboard.

Talya frowned clearly curious to see what he was up to. She watched him lift a large piece of wood out of the closet and set it down. Then he looked at Talya.

“Oh Jay! It is beautiful!” Talya whispered.

It was the shell of a baby cot. It had carved corners and a delicate inlayed pattern on each panel. It was smooth to touch and its mahogany colour made it look warm, inviting and safe.

“I still have a lot of work to do on it before it will be ready.”

“There’s no rush.” Talya whispered.

“Oh my Darling,” Jason took her into his arms. “Today is one of the happiest days of my life!”

“Mine too,” she smiled before kissing him deeply.

The incessant ringing of his phone finally pulled them apart.

“Storm.” He answered.

“Jason, its Lebo.”

“Oh I promised to call her with news....” Talya replied.

Storm handed the phone over to Talya.

“Is Talya okay? Are you okay?” Talya heard Lebo asking.

“Lebo,” Talya said. “We are fine.”

“You are sure?”

“Yes, and you can tell the rest of the team that ...”

“That!” Lebo demanded.

“I’m pregnant!”

Hoots of laughter and shrieks of joy filtered over the line. Storm and Talya laughed too.

Could life get any better than this?

A week later, Talya lay on the examination bed, Jason next to her. The last week had flown by and Talya loved every moment of being pregnant. Everyone at the office pampered her and did things for her, even Mike. Most of all she loved being so thoroughly loved and almost worshipped by Jason. He was so attentive, so giving, so loving and so amazing.

Dr Coleman entered the room and smiled.

“Let’s take a look.” She said as she prepared the ultra sound arm and inserted it.

“Here we go.” She said adjusting the settings on the monitor. Storm and Talya stared at the screen. Then they heard it, the rapid fluttering.

“That’s your baby’s heartbeat.” Dr Coleman smiled. Talya looked from the ultra sound monitor to Storm.

“Oh Jay!” She gasped. He took her hand and squeezed it. He was too emotional to speak.

“That’s your baby.” Dr Coleman said, drawing their attention back to the screen. It was just a little curved mass, with a rapidly moving flap. But that was their precious baby.

Dr Coleman moved the ultrasound arm, magnifying the image. “And what do we have here?”

“What is it?” Talya asked, concern creeping into her voice.

“Doctor?” Storm looked from Dr Coleman to the screen.

“I do believe we have a second heartbeat. Listen to it.” Dr Coleman said.

Storm and Talya listened and they heard it, one flutter a nanosecond before another.

Twins?” Storm asked, his eyes widening in awe.

“Yes, twins.” Dr Coleman replied. “There it is, almost hidden by the other baby.”

Two babies!” Talya whispered reaching out to touch the screen with one hand as her other stayed over her pelvis.

“I thought this would never happen.” Talya whispered. “I thought I would never be pregnant.”

“I know,” Jason kissed her forehead. “But it has happened and we are going to have two wonderful babies.”

“I love you Jason Storm.” Talya said. “Thank you for....”

“Shh my sweet.” He said.

“Thank you ... for making this happen...”

“Shh.... I love you too,” Jason said his hands cupping her face. “I should be thanking you for giving me this chance to be a father and a husband again.”

“Everything looks great Talya.” Dr Coleman said. “Stick to the vitamin regime I’ve given you and I would like to see you again in two weeks time.”

Dr Coleman removed the ultrasound arm, covered Talya and left the room.

Storm moved to lean over Talya. He lifted her chin and looked into her eyes. She took his hands and laced his fingers before covering her pelvis. His fingertips gently stroked her flesh.

“I love you.” He whispered.

Her reply was to pull him close and kiss him deeply.
