Chapter 50

Fascination. Is it really 'fascination' that I felt towards Veronica?

I watched as she turned the faucet on and splashed water on her face and used the water to wipe her arms and neck. Everything was in slow motion or was I too attentive?

She was sweaty from all that horse riding she did and she ended up to an open sink, where she washed her face and then looked at me completely oblivious to my staring.

“How did you know where I am?” she asked as she took the towel from my hand and wiped her face. Her hair was still loose and wet at the end. It stuck on her glossy skin and my finger itched to touch it but I refrained myself from doing so as I stared into her eyes.

“Your secretary spilled the beans to Noah,” I said internally grimacing over the fact that I completely forgot Noah’s presence back there in the field. He might have already seen me kissing Veronica. Shit!

“Did she? Somebody needs to find a new job then,” Veronica winked at me as I raised an eyebrow at her.

“You are going to fire her?” I asked and she shrugged tying her hair up before looking back at me. “Are you not happy that I found you and came to give you a surprise?” I asked and she smiled incredibly. “Of course I am! I am very happy,” she came forward putting her arms around my neck.

“But the one who doesn’t understand work and privacy is not going to be with me,” she said and withdrew her hand turning around.

“But because it was you, I will let her go this time just with a warning,” she looked back at me and as I smiled, she winked at me and we walked back towards the entrance where I had previously left Noah.

I saw him standing near the fence with his back facing us and I approached him. His eyes were fixated on something and I looked at the direction to find him staring at a woman.

“That’s Ava, my secretary,” Veronica looked up at me before walking up to her secretary who was caressing a brown horse completely oblivious to our presence. I watched as the brunette woman, looked back at Veronica and all of a sudden, the smile faded away from her face as she joined her hands and nodded at Veronica.

It looked like Veronica was giving her the warning but let her off the hooks because of me.

Why is it me for whom she is ready to change her ways?

I looked back at Noah to find him still staring at the brunette woman. “Are you done with your staring?” I asked and all of a sudden he seemed to snapped out of his thoughts because he got hold his tab from a side table and looked into it.

“Let’s go!” I told him and he nodded not even looking up at me.

“And-” I began but stopped thinking whether or not to ask him if he saw me with Veronica. If he did, then he would definitely tell my father and before he does that, I needed to get ready for an explanation. But then, I wasn’t sure if he did see us. What if he got distracted and didn’t mark us? In that case, if I ask him anything about it then he would have an idea.

So, I came up with the conclusion to go with the flow and let the matter dissolve.

“You call this your house?” I asked as I looked out of the car’s window towards the gigantic structure.

“It’s a mansion,” I exclaimed and she smiled at me.

“But still my house,” she said and I looked back. It was a contemporary modern surrounded by walls. As we got inside and the car came to a halt, I got out to look at the place. The design exudes luxury and it was a white colored structure.

A maid walked out of the house and Veronica handed her gloves and a bag before looking back at me asking me to follow her.

“Where are you two staying?” Veronica asked as we made our way into the house and I looked back at Noah totally flabbergasted by the interior. Even the interior exudes luxury and style incorporation spacious flow throughout allowing for an easy relaxed indoor and outdoor.

“In a hotel,” I told her as she looked back at me narrowing her eyes at me.

“Shift here, I have six bedrooms and I only use one,” she smiled and I chuckled nodding my head at her.

“It’s alright, we can man-”

“Did I ask? I told you to shift,” she said in a demanding tone which made me roll my eyes, still smiling. What amazed me the most was the doors in the living room. The living room had large fold-away doors that open up to spacious covered patio that leads to sparkling heated pools, and separate gym or flatlet. I saw that because some maids were cleaning and they left the door open.

"You live alone?" I asked and she nodded.

"Sometimes my parents do come here to live with me but currently I am living-" she stopped mid-sentence as I stared at her raising an eyebrow. She smiled as she signaled me to look back and I did only to find a woman in a wheelchair helped by a maid making their way to us.

"Cami," she said and I instantly looked back at her as she nodded and smiled.

The woman in the wheelchair smiled as she stopped before us and I knelt down to hold her warm hands.

"You must be, Mr. Ace Knights," she said in a soft voice as I nodded. "And you must be, Cami," I said as she smiled radiantly and looked back at Veronica.

"I have heard a lot about you," she said which made me look back at Veronica who averted her gaze which made Cami chuckle at her reactions.

"You are in a wheelchair," I mumbled and she nodded as her eyes shadowed up with sadness and I remembered Veronica telling me everything about her from being in London school of science to asylum. She even told me that Cami, during her asylum days, jumped off a building and perhaps that caused her paralysis and she ended up in a wheelchair.

"My mom also uses one but she is always radiant!" I joked and that made her smile. "Am I not radiant?" she asked and I nodded, "Perhaps more than her," as I said that, Cami grinned at me and I smiled looking at the blonde woman with glasses.

Even though she smiled, I could still feel her sadness as I stared into her eyes. Now I do understand what made Veronica go such extents. Perhaps, she was unable to witness her sadness and wanted to have solace for her.

I knew how it felt to see your loved ones suffering and as I suffered watching my mother on a wheelchair and my father's agony, I knew Veronica and her family were equally suffering with Cami. It was torturous and heartbreaking.

But that's family.

Giving support to each other at a difficult time of life.

Understanding Veronica is one hell of a thing. The woman is puzzled up with secrets and whatnots but still, I couldn't help myself from falling head over heels with her again and again.

Veronica, I really love you. I hope I will soon, let you know about this.

She looked back at me raising an eyebrow and I shook my head and she came forward holding Cami's hand while Noah stood to the side staring at us perhaps thinking about what was going on.
