Marry Him
“If you want to succeed,
There is a way,
If you can’t succeed,
Still, there must be a way around,”
Adam looks at me with his pouted lips. He looks tired and bored after hearing my short speech just now. Well, he asked for the lecture himself.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked him while smirking.
I don’t know why he asked me to say something to motivate him. He did know that my motivation speech all turned out to be boring.
“You’re bad at motivating people,” He said as he gets up from the bench. Stretching his back and yawning.
“You’re lucky to have me as your friend,” I said as I pack my things.
We are neighbours, and we go to the same college. Both of us had the same desire to become a well-known entrepreneur. Well, he isn’t as admirable as I thought he is. When the professor gives us homework, he keeps himself glued to me all the time.
“I think I am,” He said smirking.
His eyes glow with mischief. I rolled my eyes.
“I regretted meeting you since the first year,”
“No, you like me being around you,” He winks at me.
I pursed my lips and stretched my hand to pinch him on the arms.
“Ouch!” He squeals.
“You’re so mean,” He said glaring at me.
I rolled my eyes, feeling annoyed. I walk past Adam and towards his car. I’m thankful that he knows how to drive. He opened the car, and both of us get inside it heading home.
“You shouldn’t waste your time anymore, Adam. This is our last year being in a college. You can’t just hang on to me to pass. After this examination, we might get separated,”
“I don’t want you to get in trouble when you’re working on your own in the future. I don’t want that to happen, Adam. If you really want to achieve your dream, you can if you had the wills to do so, you can succeed even if you do it in your own ways,” I spoke with a serious expression on my face.
“Stop it, Elaine!” He mutter.
“Adam, listen to me. I can’t help you to succeed in your career again after this. We might work far away from each other. If you really had a will to be an entrepreneur just like me, you had to work harder on your own sometimes,”
“I said, STOP it!” He shouted.
I turn my head to face him. He rubs his forehead using one of his free hand. His face turns dark as his expression became serious. It kind of scared me to see him act like that.
“I-I’m s-sorry,” I stuttered as I bit back a sob that wanted to escape my lips. It hurts.
He only acts like this when he takes something seriously.
Was it wrong to advise him? Did I say something wrong back then? Fine, he wanted me to stop, so I’ll stop.
I lowered my head and hid my face with my hair. Tears began streaming down to my cheek. I breathe slowly trying to stop more tears from coming. I bite my lips, holding my sob inside.
As we arrive home, it was already raining. I open the car door and quickly run to my house, not saying goodbye to him. I remember him calling my name. But, I don’t have the heart to face him in my condition right now.
I dash into my home and run into mom. She looks at me, curiously. But, I ignored her and ran to the stairs, heading straight to my room.
I showered, get in clothes and get ready to sleep. I was just about to close my eyes when my phone vibrated. I stretched my hand and grabbed it.
It was Adam. Should I answer him? I can’t live comfortably holding a grudge against anyone. I slide my finger on the screen and put the phone on my ear.
“Elaine?” His voice sounds full of guilt.
“What do you want?”
“I’m sorry for shouting at you,” He seems sincere.
“I’m hanging up,” I try to sound irritated.
“Wait, I want to tell you that you have to take a bus to go to school starting tomorrow. I can’t take you because I have decided to go abroad and study on my own,” My eyes widened in terror at his remark.
I run downstairs as quick as I can but just as I reach for the doorknob-
“Elaine, my dear. I’m sorry, but I’m not at home. I’m in a hotel because my flight is tomorrow,”
“You’re mad at me, right?” I felt hurt seeped into my voice.
“I am not mad. Wasn’t it you who told me to study and grab my dream on my own?” He said as if to mock me.
“You’re leaving me because of that?” I lean my back to the wall behind me as I close my teary eyes.
“Don’t cry. This is why I leave earlier. You wouldn’t want me to go. Miss me as much as you like, okay? When I returned, you’re the first person that I’ll meet,”
I bite my lips. Why are you doing this to me, you jerk?!
“Well, goodbye, Elaine,” He hangs up the second I burst out crying.
I love my best friend. But, it felt more than that.
Two years later
Ding! Dong!
I ran to the doors and opened it, hoping it’s him.
I open the door, and finally, my smile crept up to my face. I jumped and hugged Adam as he returned the hug.
“Did you miss me?” He asked, looking straight to my eyes.
“Yes!”
“Did you cry a lot for me?”
“Yes!”
“Elaine?”
“Yeah?”
He got on his knees and took something from his pocket.
I gasped when he opened the small box containing a diamond ring.
“Will you be my wife?” He said grinning at me devilishly.
“Yes! Absolutely!” I squealed.
Then, I heard peoples cheering and clapping. I blush at my change of behaviour. I looked like a dead person for the past two years. But, he made me feel alive when he returned.
It's official. I wanna marry him.
The end
