Chapter 31

Well, I guess the award to the luckiest girl in the world definitely won’t be mine. I was in yesterday’s dress, with my underwear in my hands and disheveled hair. The evidence was here.

“Did I wake you up?” I opened my door and took a step inside.

“Obviously.” She yawned.

“Sorry... I was feeling thirsty, so... I went downstairs to drink some water... You know, after this wine...”

“Yeah, the wine was good.”

The silence. I took another step inside. I was hoping that she won’t ask any more questions. She was still sleepy, so I think she will be asleep as soon as her head lands on the pillow.

“Did you fall asleep in your dress?” Kate, with her curiosity, will be the death of me.

“Apparently, yeah. Kate, listen, I hope to sleep a little more...”

“Where were you?” Now she was standing with her hands on her hips.

“In the kitchen. I told you.” I wasn’t going to admit anything to her. I will be holding on to my story, no matter what. Nothing happened between Logan and me. The end.

“Bullshit. I know you, Becca...”

“Give me a break, Kate! I am tired of these suspicions... I said that I was in the kitchen and that’s it. See you in the morning.”

I barely restrained myself from slamming the door before her stunned face. But honestly, who does she think she is? I stood in the middle of the room. Should I go to the shower, or the best option will be to try to sleep? I glanced at my phone, which I left in the room. There was an unread message from an unknown number. I recognized it immediately. It was from Drew. I didn’t want to deal with it, not after Kate’s accusations. I checked the time, and it was 6:30 already. I sighed and plopped myself on the bed. I hoped at least to sleep for 2 hours. As soon as I hid under the blanket, I fell asleep. When I was wakened up by Lily’s cheerful voice, it was 11.

“Becca, are you planning to sleep till will be the time to drive off?” She was sitting on my bed, and she was smiley. Ugh, my head hurt.

“No.” I stood up from my bed, and I guess too quickly as I felt dizzy in an instant. I closed my eyes and counted to three before opening them.

“Are you okay?” Lily was worried. Just what I needed.

“Yeah, just... I will go to the shower, Lil. Is there any food left?”

“Of course. Mom saved you some snacks. And for Logan too. She went to wake him up. He watched soccer again, so he overslept too.” I walked to the bathroom door, turned around, and looked at Lily.

“Lil, I will go to the shower, I need it to wake up properly.”

She nodded and stood up from my bed. When I was in the shower, I heard the door closing. I leaned my bareback on the shower door and sighed. Was I feeling guilty because of what I did with Logan? Absolutely. Was I regretting this? No. These feelings gave me a headache. I need to take a shower and go for breakfast. That’s what I will do.

After the shower, I got dressed in my skinny jeans, a blue t-shirt, and braided my hair in two Danish braids. I was forced to apply makeup to hide my black circles under my eyes and my pale face. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I looked cute, nothing special, but okay. I went down to the living room when it was almost 12:30. It was already near lunchtime.

“Good morning, sleepyhead!” Mr. Jones greeted me with a smile; he was sitting on the couch with a book in his hands.

“Good morning. I am overslept, and we’re leaving today, and I think...”

“Don’t apologize, Rebecca. There is nothing wrong! When you are back from the lake, I hope you will have dinner with us before leaving for your hometown.”

“With pleasure!” I smiled at him. He was really kind and so considerate.

“Now, go! I am sure, you’re starving! I heard that Drew called, and he will be there soon to pick you all up.”

“Thank you!” I walked to the kitchen, and only then, I remembered that I received a message from Drew and still didn’t read it. Did I even want to know what was in there? I entered the room and was greeted by total silence. Mrs. Jones, Logan, Lily, and Kate were here, but they weren’t talking, and now they all were staring at me.

“Look, who finally decided to join us!” Kate’s voice was full of sarcasm. I had a feeling that she will try to interrogate me about this night’s events.

“Kate, it’s okay. Some of us need more sleep than others. Especially after the excellent wine.” Mrs. Jones winked and smiled at me. “Come here, Rebecca. There is food for you.”

I came closer to the kitchen counter and sat between Kate and Lily. Unfortunately, now I was right in front of Logan. He was eating some cereal, and when I sat, he looked at me and smiled. I instantly relaxed and smiled back. I guess I was right when I thought that our relationship with him would be different. Strangely, this tension between us disappeared. I couldn’t say that I didn’t feel attracted to him; my sympathy to him still was there. It just changed. Why didn’t we do it sooner?

Mrs. Jones placed a bowl with cereal and plate with sandwiches before me, then she turned around, and the next thing I know, there was orange juice before my eyes. I was very thankful to her, but at the same time, I felt guilty. I snuck to her son’s room and had sex with him, encouraging him to cheat on his girlfriend. Wow, when did I become so sluttish? Because this was precise, who I was.

“Earth to Becca! You need to eat! We will be leaving very soon. Did you pack your things?” Lily was eyeing me.

“Yeah, I packed everything. Thank you so much for the food, truly!”

I smiled at Mrs. Jones and started eating. In 15 minutes, we all walked out of the kitchen and went to our rooms. I took my bag and left the room. I was the first there and stood leaning my back on the wall, and soon I heard steps, and Logan appeared before me. Why had he needed to be ready so fast?
