The next morning Tyler and I went to the kitchen together. Tasha and Jake were already here. They’ve been waiting for us with fried eggs with bacon and freshly brewed coffee. I glanced at Tasha, trying to read her emotions, but she only smiled at me. Jake wasn’t very happy about Tyler’s presence in his house, but I was grateful to him for not judging me at least.
“So, lovebirds, is everything alright between you two?” Tasha asked, as soon as we sat at the table.
“Maybe we should have let them eat, don’t you think?” Jake’s eyes wide open and eyebrow raised in surprise.
“Nah. I waited the whole night. Now I already lost my patience and want to know the truth.”
“You’re impossible, but I love you too much to argue with you.” Jake kissed her temple and turned his attention to us. “Well, are you two together? As a couple? Or only friends?”
Tasha snorted so loudly, so all of us stared at her. My hand with a fork hung in the air, Tyler blinked and laughed. Jake turned to Tasha with an amused look on his face.
“Did I say something funny?”
“Do you really so naïve? They were alone in the room for almost the whole day, they didn’t leave a bed for more time than it was necessary. I am sure as hell, they were making up for all these 4 years. Besides our friend is not that discreet as she thinks she is.” Saying that she winked at me and I felt my cheeks burning hot.
“I am sorry...”
“Are you serious? You shouldn’t apologize. I’m happy for you.” Tasha placed her hand on mine and gave it a little squeeze.
“Well, I am sorry for asking. But they were used to hooking-up all the time in the past... So I just wanted the confirmation...” Jake shrugged his shoulders and stared at Tyler. Hard. “If you will hurt Vera, I will give you hell. Believe me.”
“I would never do that to Vera. Not anymore. I know now, what I want and who I want to be with. She’s too precious to me. It’s a miracle that she still wants to be with me.”
“Yeah, this girl is a saint. To put up with all your shit and still being there with you.” Jake wasn’t going to back away. He didn’t know Tyler too well, but he knew everything about my relationship with him and it was enough to not have any respect to him.
“She agreed to be my girlfriend and I also asked her to move into my place. I want to marry her. Because I am 100% sure, that she’s the one for me.”
The kitchen plunged into silence. Tasha and Jake were staring at Tyler, they were surprised to hear it. Especially from someone like him. But he was right. He was the one for me. I didn’t need anyone except for him in my life. I couldn’t even imagine my life without him. He was making me whole, like glue putting my damaged pieces in one.
“You know, Tyler, it’s good to hear. Somehow I know, that you will make her happy. But I’m warning you too... You’re too used to hurting her with your bullshit, with your father and other chicks. So I advise you to put your shit together and do not screw up.” Tasha was serious, not even hint of a smile.
“Listen... First time in my life I want to make everything right. I want to be with a woman, with whom I was in love for a long time. So I don’t have any intention to screw things up. I am going to make her the happiest girl in New York. Believe me, Tasha, I know what’s on stakes.”
“Guys, I want to try. I want to give it a shot. Tyler knows that it’s his last chance, our last chance. If something happens and we couldn’t be together. I won’t be coming back. Never. He knows that. I know that. I love him, but my heart will not stand another heartbreak. I won’t stand it.”
“Oh God, why do I feel like a jerk now?!” Jake shook his head. Then he extended his hand to Tyler and he eagerly took it for the handshake. “Let’s start over? I don’t have so much history with you. I hardly know you, if I can be honest. But if you’re going to stuck with us, I think we need to fix it.”
“Yeah, it will be good for a start.” Finally, I saw a smile on Jake’s face.
We all had a chance to finish our breakfast. After that Tyler and Jake went to the living room to watch basketball and to talk things through, leaving me and Tasha alone. We needed to talk. I was so grateful to her, for her help with Tyler. If it wasn’t for her, I wasn’t sure, that I would have had the strength to talk to him.
“Well, I have a confession to make.” Tasha’s mischievous smile appeared on her lips.
“What is it?”
“Will you be my maid of honor?”
“Wha... Oh my gosh!!! Of course! When did it happen? How did it happen?” I wrapped her in my arms, squeezing her hard.
“Uhm... After I left you with Tyler yesterday, I went to Jake’s. He wasn’t happy with my decision to call Tyler. He was angry at me. You’re like a sister to him, so you could imagine his reaction. We went to our favorite café and sat there and talked. I told him about your feelings for Tyler and about what he told me about you. We talked and talked. I said to Jake, that if you two could solve your problems, that you will be together till the end of your life. I guess you could understand our surprise. I talked with Jake about your possible marriage with Douglas and now he was sitting in our kitchen, saying that he wants to marry you.”
“Okay. But I am not following. How come that you’re engaged now?”
“Well... We started talking about marriage, about our plans for the future... Suddenly Jake got up from the table and said that he needs to go somewhere. You know him, I wasn’t even surprised by his outburst. When he was back, he kneeled before me and proposed to me. Customers and the waitresses were ecstatic, especially after I said “Yes” to him. I even yelled, if I can be honest.”
“I am so damn happy for you two! Shit, I wasn’t going to cry, but here I am...” I hugged Tasha again, she was crying too. “When do you want to get married?”
“We were thinking about the summer. Maybe July or August?”
“Why to wait? I love him, he loves me. We were living together for a couple of years already.”
“But the wedding of your dream...”
“I don’t care. I need Jake, you and my parents at this wedding, the other stuff doesn’t interest me.”
I talked with her for hours. Tyler and Jake joined us after some time and we spent this day watching movies, eating takeaway food, drinking beer and laughing. I wasn’t that happy for years and I enjoyed every second of it.
