When she lay in Adam’s arms later that night, Kara thought about some of the options she had a feeling would be a good choice as a gift for his birthday. Maybe she could cook them a nice meal first, top it off with cake and dessert and then spend the evening doing anything that he’d like to do. Of course, she’d need Megan’s help to get his apartment a little more festive while keeping him engaged elsewhere. She wanted to make the day memorable for him. While she was still skeptical about the gift she could get him, she knew that celebrating that day with the people close to him, which were just Megan and her from what she knew so far, would be something that he would like. She knew she would cherish any memory she created with him.
“You’re thinking again.” Adam’s voice distracted her from her planning.
He had his arm around her shoulder while she rested her head on his. With his fingers, he traced patterns on her arm, leaving behind a warm, pleasurable feeling. She loved it.
She was dressed in a pair of boy shorts and one of Adam’s shirts, simply because she liked how they smelled of him. His was a distinct scent that she was coming to love more and more every single day. Turning her head, Kara dropped a kiss on his chest.
“How did training go?” She asked, keeping her voice low and hoping the curiosity and apprehension that she felt like a constant weight in her gut didn’t make itself known.
She felt it the moment he stiffened beside her. Hoping that she hadn’t asked him the wrong question that got him upset, she stayed quiet, praying that he’d share what was on his mind with her. Kara wanted to help ease his burden, she wanted him to know that she had his back, even though the possibility of him getting hurt in any way made her stomach clench painfully. She wouldn’t be able to handle losing Adam.
When his fingers resumed their movement, she relaxed.
“It’s going well, actually.” She felt the increase in the tempo of his heartbeat.
“I have my first fight next week.” He continued quietly.
His words made her go still.
Adam squeezed her arm, bringing her closer to him.
“Oh,” she tried to calm the panic beginning to rise in her chest.
There was silence for a long moment.
Then Kara felt him adjust his position so he was hovering over her, looking down into her eyes.
“Are you okay with that?”
“Am I okay with what?” She tried a light smile, fighting to keep her fear for him from showing.
She knew she had failed when she saw that familiar intensity appear in his eyes.
“Kara, it’s no big deal. I’m going to be fine, I promise.”
She swallowed and nodded.
Adam raised his right hand and cupped her cheek, his blue gaze softening.
“I’ll always come back to you, baby.”
His attempt to comfort her made her heart stutter. She could see the worry in his eyes and a hint of the vulnerability that had been there when he’d told her his history. Kara felt the pinprick of tears. Placing her palm on the back of his neck, she pressed slowly, till his forehead was against hers.
He was close enough that they were breathing the same air.
She placed her other hand on his chest, her palm covering his heart.
“Do you promise?” She asked softly, a plea in her voice.
Adam nuzzled her nose with his, dropping a kiss on the corner of her mouth.
“With everything I am.”
Her heart surged with love for him.
Kara hugged him to her tight, holding on like he was about to leave at that very moment. Adam’s body was heavy on hers but she didn’t mind. Proving that he was always thinking about her, he flipped them over so that he was on his back and she was plastered to his front. Adam held her equally tight, if not more, his lips pressing soft kisses to the crown of her head.
“Thank you, little raven.” He murmured softly.
She raised her head and looked up at him.
“For understanding.” He said simply, looking down at her, his fingers clasping her arms tight.
She laid her head back down, her ear on the spot right over his heart. She could hear the steady beat thumping through his body. Recollecting the bruises he had on his abdomen the last time he had fought made her swallow hard. This wasn’t easy. Standing in the sidelines, unsure of whether or not Adam would be okay was something that had the potential to eat her alive if she wasn’t careful.
Then suddenly, a new question made its way to the forefront of her thoughts.
How in the world was she supposed to explain to her parents about Adam. What was she supposed to tell them? That he fought for money? That she was afraid he wouldn’t come back to her some day?
Kara could almost imagine the frown that her father would adorn his features with if he knew what Adam did for a living. While Kara knew with absolute faith that her parents weren’t judgmental whatsoever, she was very skeptical about them being okay with it. Her dad wasn’t overprotective but he loved his family more than anything in the world and was always on the lookout for anything that might be a potential issue for any of them.
The men that Adam was involved with, were far from safe. They were dangerous, at the very least. And Kara had no idea what they were capable of.
She snuggled closer to Adam, conscious about how every inch of her body was fitted tight against his. For a brief moment, Adam let go of her, only to reach out and pull the comforter over them, tucking it around Kara, making sure she was completely covered.
“You okay?” He asked, placing a finger beneath her chin and tilting her head up towards his.
When Kara looked at him, she saw the worry he was trying to hide.
Slipping off him, she curled herself into his side and then proceeded to press her lips to his in a soft, gentle kiss. “Are you tired?” she lightly placed a finger on the dark circles below his eyes. His body looked exhausted. She reached over and placed a kiss on his cheek, wrapping her fingers around his neck.
He was so damn perfect.
Kara looked thoughtfully at a small blemish on his chin. It looked like a cut that hadn’t healed very well.
“Can I come see you fight?” she asked, focusing on his warm blue gaze.
She saw the surprise on his face.
“Kara,” he ran his fingers through his hair as though he was hesitating.
“What?” she asked, grabbing his hand and holding on to it.
“Baby, it’s not safe. I don’t want them to see you and I don’t want you exposed to all of that fucked up shit in any way.” He sat up as he spoke, looking at his hand in hers before focusing on her.
Kara wanted to let the tiny spark of denial grow but she tamped it down.
“Fine.” She said, dropping his hand. “But I want you to promise me that you’ll be truthful to me about all of this.” She demanded, crossing her arms over her chest.
“No more secrets, Adam. No more lies and omissions. Do you understand?”
He nodded solemnly.
“No more. I promise.”
Kara nodded, tucking her hair behind her ear. Adam lifted his arms and held them out to her.
“Can I have you now?”
She couldn’t help it. Her lips curved in a reluctant smile.
Without answering, Kara went into his embrace. She knew she always would.
