Chapter 3

Kara squashed the tiny bug of despair that had begun to crawl up her spine when she had heard Adam’s words. He still wasn’t clear about where they stood? But what about him saying that he wanted them to give this- whatever it was between them- a chance? Isn’t that what this all was about?

She kissed Adam gently, noting how his hands were gentle on her skin, caressing her in a way that made her feel like he was almost reverential. She was shocked at the wanton display that she’d just done.

Jesus.

Never ever, in her entire life, had she imagined herself in such a situation. Desperate for the touch of the person she was sure she had feelings for. When she had been younger, Kara had always imagined falling in love with someone who was just like her and understood her really well.

Adam was on the other side of the spectrum completely. He was her opposite in so many ways and he was nothing like the person she had imagined herself being with.

At that very moment, Adam’s strokes subtly changed from just smoothing over her body to forceful strokes that made her skin tingle and cause the pulse between her legs to return.

She let herself get lost in his touch and let out a soft sigh of surrender when he dragged her torso closer so that she lay flat against his upper body. Reaching behind her, his hands now began a firm massage of her ass and Kara felt the rush of blood to her cheeks when she realized how close his fingers were to her most sensitive parts.

She broke away for a breath, trying to raise herself up on his chest, but he stopped her midway, one hand going around her nape and holding her in place. “Don’t move.” His voice was soft but hard at the same time and the look in his eyes turned her on even more. It was as though there would be punishment if she disobeyed.

Kara couldn’t stop the slight upturned smile that crept along her mouth. “I should spank your gorgeous ass just because you find it funny when I’m being utterly serious.” He said it with a straight face but the slight amusement in his blue eyes told her it was okay.

“You call that a punishment?” She said coyly, curious as to whether he’d really spank her and eager to find out if she’d enjoy it.

His eyebrow shot up. “Have you been spanked before?”

Kara unconsciously bit her lip and pretended to think about it.

Anger leaped into those ice blue irises, heating them up to a darker shade of blue. “The answer better be a no, baby.” She felt his entire body go rigid underneath her.

Kara tamped down the giggle that threatened to spill out of her. She shook her head, keeping her expression serious. “No.”

She was elated to see the fire in his eyes thaw a bit but return when she unknowingly moved her hips in a restless motion. “Are you trying to get away?”

Kara almost frowned at the sudden swing of his emotions. Did he go through something that made him so quick to anger? She remembered the look of pure hatred on his handsome face when he had rescued her at Max’s home, punching him till she was sure he would kill Max if he hadn’t been stopped.

Then an image of him holding her while she slept crept into her mind. The panicked look on his face when he thought she had left, all of it made her realize that she didn’t know a lot about the man beneath the stony exterior he put up for all the world to see. The sweet gentleness and the raw passion he displayed with her were something, but she now knew that he had many layers that she still had to peel off layer by layer lest she spooked him by trying to push into areas of his life that she wasn’t sure she was welcome into.

“Adam?”

His face relaxed somewhat but his hand stayed on the nape of her neck, his firm grip not scaring her in the least but instead making her realize that maybe, he always needed to have some sort of control in every situation. Did it have to do with his parents passing away when he was a child and no one really caring about him the way they should have?

She watched in fascination as his pupils dilated when she leaned in further to his hold, wanting him to know that she wasn’t going anywhere. Not now, not when he needed her. “I want you to take your shirt off.”

His breath left him in a harsh sound. Letting her go only slightly, he sat up, making her lean back. Kara slipped her fingers underneath the hem of his tshirt and pulled the material off when he raised his arms above his head to help her out.

When his warm, tanned and tattooed skin was exposed to her, Kara froze, and heat stole up her body again. He was so beautiful, it hurt to look at him. She saw that the bruises on his body had faded away to a lighter shade of purple and yellow. She reached out tentatively and put her hand on his flat stomach that showcased a hard six pack. She looked up at him with a question when she felt the muscles ripple below her touch.

“Fighting’s taken its toll.” He said grimly, giving her a slightly sheepish grin.

“What do you mean?”

He took her hand in his and placed it on the spot where his heart rested. “The scars.” He said in a quiet voice, a hint of uncertainty in it. Kara could feel the rapid thud of his heart and she was stunned when it seemed to pick up pace the more he watched her.

She shifted closer to him, aware that she had his complete attention.

“What are you thinking?” She asked, trying to gauge his reaction to her touch.

He didn’t answer her for a moment.

“I’m thinking about how you’re too good for me.”

Her hand faltered. She looked at him to see a hint of vulnerability in those eyes that had been so cold at one time.

“Why would you think that?”

His response was slow but it seemed like he had given it a lot of thought. “Look at me, Kara. I’ve made shitty choices, bad decisions all my life.” He placed his hand over hers and she thought he was going to take it away. But he just pressed it firmly to his skin and continued.

“I have nothing to offer you.” He swallowed and for a moment, the insecurity in his look broke her resolve to let him speak and get it all out. “You are this amazing, beautiful woman who has something great in store in your future and I’m not sure you’ll want this when you come to your senses.”

Kara tilted her head to the side and took her hand away, making him drop his own to his sides.

“Is that what you really think?”

“Yes.” He nodded. Then he surprised her when he wrapped his strong arms around her waist and pulled her higher up his lap. “But that’s not all.”

Kara frowned this time. “There’s more?”

“Yeah.”

He leaned his forehead against hers and dropped a soft kiss on the tip of her nose.

“I want you.” He said in a firm voice.

When she opened her mouth to say something, he silenced her with his finger on her lips.

“More than I’ve ever wanted anyone or anything in my entire life.”

Kara felt the first rush of fire in her belly.

“I love the way your body responds to mine and the look of trust in your eyes every time I touch you.” His words made something inside her melt.

“Adam, it’s the-“

“Hush.” There was a gentle reprimand in his voice. Kara pursed her lips and tried to sit still. She knew she was wet again, her body primed with his touch and the words he was saying to her.

“But I also know how precious that trust is.” He kissed her eyelids.

“And yes, I want to fuck you so bad that my cock feels strangled each time I jerk off to thoughts of you.” She gasped at his admission which made him chuckle lightly.

“Oh yeah I fucking do, baby.“ He kissed her forehead.

“But I swear, I’m going to do whatever it takes to be what you need me to be. And if a knight in shining armor is what you want, I’ll be the best fucking one.”

Then before she could say a word, he leaned in and sealed his promise with a kiss.
