Chapter 1 Chasing shadows

It was the end of summer and we were on our way to our new home in the great city of Los Angeles. I couldn't have been more excited a new city a new life. I looked out the window and watched the desert speed by; the sun beaming down on hot sand and dry tumble weeds. It was mid day and it seemed everything was going my way. I had such a hard time at the school I left and I was hoping that this next school year at a new school would be the start of something new for me; I didn't know what it was I was looking for perhaps it was adventure in the big city or the need to make new friends. Either way I was ecstatic, enthusiastic and driven with boundless inspiration for what this city would hold for me.

"Hay we need to stop for gas real quick you want to get something to eat, kid" I look over at my old man in the driver seat. He had just turned forty-six two weeks ago and even to me he looks like he was only pushing thirty. Mom always said he was like a fine wine; to tell the truth I still don't get that analogy, but he was quite good looking for his age. Only a little graying in his hair which was covered by an old baseball cap and a slight bit of visibility in wrinkles when he smiled but it was his eyes that gave him away; the deep rich green contrasted by dark brown skin could never fool me of his true age. They held a lot of wisdom, wisdom he usually bestows upon me which I unwillingly listen to. But all in all I am grateful for him even if he a black man that likes county; Vary unhip by the way.

"Tija did you hear me, you hungry?" I snap out of my daze to answer him.

"Yeah Dad, do they have a fast food place I really don't want any more gas station market food."

"Well it sure looks that way, look." He pointed to the red and yellow billboard approaching on the right side of the road. He turned on his turning signal and started to exit the highway to the gas station rest stop.

When the car stopped at the pump he handed me a fifty dollar bill and told me to fill it up. I hurried in to pay. There wasn't a long line just a single lady getting a few food items before me. After she finished up I walked up the lady dressed in a blue pin striped uniform shirt with the logo of the gas station on the right breast pocket and handed her the money telling her.

"fifty on four please" I didn't wait for her to say anything she just nodded and I rushed off, quickly returning to the old gray/silver SUV parked at pump number four. I walked over to my dad who was pressing the button for the type of gas he was putting in the car.

"You want something from Mc'Ds Dad?" He stud for a moment with one hand resting on the gas pump that was inserted in the gas tank and the other propped on his hip. "Why don't you get me a number one and make it super sized."

"Super sized dad, with all the stops we have made so far do you really think that a super sized soda would get us there any faster?" I criticized.

"Common baby girl it's hot out here." He pleaded taking off his hat and faning himself in a dramatized fashion, it worked I throw up my hands in defeat and walked away with a dramatic wave of my hand over to the restaurants.

Before I knew it we were back on the road to Los Angeles. "Are you excited Tija? New City, new school; you got to be right?"

"I guess I am a little…"

"You don't have to play cool with me missy I remember when you liked cartoon guys over real ones. Who are you into now, that Bieber kid right or is it That Christ Brown guy?"

"I don't like either one, Justin Bieber us to be cool but now I think he'd becoming a tool and Christ Brown is so not cute now a days!"

"Listen to you; 'So not cute now a days' but that white boy ow he hot girl; you hear yourself I have looked through your music before, where all the brothers at? I like Christ Brown."

"I do not sound like that. and what about all that drama happened with Rhiana?"

"Hay I never said the brother was right in the head I just meant I like his music I don't want to marry the guy." We both started to laugh. His laugh always reminded me of a Wayne's brother but most people would say he looked like Carl Weathers. I bet he could do a good impression if he tried. He looked over to me and smiled, there were bits of burger in his teeth from the big Mac he was eating while driving; yeah that's my Dad a real charmer. I smile anyway because the look of him looking so ridicules was funny to say the least. I could help but love the old man he was a great dad and I wouldn't have asked for different. I know we have ut ups and downs more so after mom... I look out the window and back out into the abyss of dry land and smelly cows. This move has to bring more for me then what has been.

We didn't Reach LA till night. We pulled up to the house; it was an one of thoughts new suburban houses that only come in two colours, egg-shell white and salmon pink. This one happened to be the pink type. It was a nice place thought none the less. I got my bag and opened the car door my dad did the same. As we reached the front the door swung open and a little round woman ran out to greet use. It was my Aunt Casey; she came and stayed at the new house while the movers moved everything in for us. It was definitely better than having to do everything yourself. She ran to me and throws her arms around me, squeezing me tightly and swilling in my ear. I was certain she was loud enough for the neighbors to hear but it was only seven pm so it wasn't that big a deal but I sure I'll be deaf come morning. She than left me and ran to my Dad; her not so little brother and did the same.

"I'm going to check out my new room Dad." I called out to them; he nodded and started to converse with my Aunt.

I walked into the house and found it well decorated with family pictures and African wooden wall hangings that Dad had gotten from his travels before I was ever born. I walked up the stairs and wandered about the upper level. To my immediate right was the bathroom and one door down was my Dad's Room. At the left of the stairs was my Dad's office and on the far end my room. I walked through the doors into a black room I touch the door in search of the light switch. I find it and turn it on; boxes were in the corner of my room with labels I put on them weeks earlier. Too tried to unpack my bag or boxes I walk over to the bed and drop on the soft surface. I yawn from lack of oxygen to my brain telling me to go to sleep when I hear a voice speaking to me from the door way. I looked over to see my Aunt standing there smiling at me. "That's why I bad up your bed; I knew you would be tired. I didn't unpack for you I though you would want to do that yourself."

I non at her and sit up. "Yeah I'll get onto that tomorrow, are you staying the night Auntie?"

"On, your Dad already asked but I have plains to go out for drinks tonight with some of my coworkers. But I'll be back here tomorrow to help you and your Dad do more unpacking. Lord knows you guys need it with all the stuff this man hoards." He laughs and it's just as loud as her squalling. I just smile and ask her turn off the light for me, she does and then I am alone again this time in darkness.

It doesn't take long before I fall asleep, a ten hour drive from Eureka CA to Los Angeles with minimal to no sleep during the drive left me pretty drained, so I was more than happy to be out like a light.

I stud in a dark parking lot it must have been at a late hour because the moon seemed so high up. I could hear foot steps behind me but when I turned around there was nothing. The air around me went deadly steel and a deep thick fog rolled in from out behind the parked cars. Slowly the feeling starts to creep up on me. I am not alone. I could feel him behind me; his breath against me, tickling the bare skin at the nap of my neck. He says something but it's unclear. His hands are on my stomach forcing my body to press against his. My body trembles in his hands but I feel as if I know this stranger; like we have met in this parking garage before. I am not afraid of him but his unheard words make me sad, but when I turn to face him he is then too far to see. I ran after the fleeing man I couldn't see and right when I reached out to touch his hand he jumps off the concert wall of the parking garage and in to the night. I called out a name I do not know but he is gone and I can no longer see him.

It was like a jolt of electricity shocks me back to life bringing my body into darkness once again. Emotions burst out of me and I start to sob. I don't know why I am crying I didn't know the person I was chasing and I couldn't recall what he had said to me. I roll over and turn on the night stand light and standing on its wood surface is a picture of mom. It was the picture of us at Disney world one year ago before...

I roll over to the other side and try to sleep again and this time there is no dream there is no stranger there is nothing.

The next morning I woke with a mission. I started off with my cloths first; my dressers were already in place so all I had to do was put cloths in them. It took a moment to get everything in place but by the end of the afternoon I had a real working bedroom. Dad and I went over my school schedule and it would be my first day tomorrow; new kids, new teachers. For most teens they might think this is the worst part of moving but I wanted this more than he did.

It was the first day at my new school and dad had taken it upon himself to drive me. I really did protest but to no prevail and there I sat in a huge SUV in the front of Arleta High School. My stomach fluttered nervously while I stared out the window at the large numbers of students entering the school in hordes. I kept telling myself this was what I wanted and it was true it was but it still was scaring the crap out of me to walk in through though doors with so many unfamiliar faces. I would only be attending two years here and then off to college and I had the chose to study at home but I thought that this would be a much better chose.

"So you ready to go in sweetie?" My father's deep voice echoed in my ear, I just nodded and opened the door; there was no use sitting in the car wasting my dad's time procrastinating. I stepped out and shut the car door with a loud thump; I started to walk over to the curb and remembered to turn and wave my dad away. I know he would wait just to see if I would change my mind and for a minute standing there watching him watch me with a huge grin on his face I know he really feels sad and sympathetic to me going back to school but this was what I wanted. So I step away and turn to enter the school.

With all the things that had gone wrong up till now this is what I needed most, a new start.

First periods bell rang indicating the start of the school day I left the office in search of my first class. The long halls and numerous doors had me for a loop though; my first class was English and I couldn't find my class, some classes had their doors open and I couldn't see the class number and the others weren't the right class. As I walked the morning announcements started. Just great now I was really late; I turned a corner coming smack dab into a thick cotton wall, that wasn't a wall at all but a tall student with the body of a tank? That's what it felt like anyway. My bag and all the books I was carrying hit the floor. I backed up and held my face scents that was the first thing that hit the surface of this human made of brick. I felt stunned like I had been hit in the head with a hammer and my nose burned something fierce.

"I'm sorry I was in a hurry." His voice was like a whisper but deep and masculine, I could hear that voice singing and not at all sounding like a girl like most male singers now a days. I looked up and found myself looking into eyes the color of star dust. I could only think that no human being in the world could have eyes this color, they were hypnotic and casted a spell on me that could not be broken. His hair was as black as coal and hung lose in his face which had a strong chiseled jaw structures but not bulky like a cave man more like a mescaline male model. I felt like I had seen his face before but couldn't place it, he was nice to look at and I probably was staring more then I should have been because he quickly looked down while pushing up a pair of thick black glasses that I hadn't noticed he was wearing before. He spoke up again much louder than the first time and his voice sounded strange to me; he had an accents that I couldn't place, it sounded slightly British but not at the same time.
"Are you lost?" he sounded a bit worried for me, like being lost in the in the school was a dangerous thing in a school as large as this one on your first day. I nodded anyway still taken off guard by the color of his eyes. "Yes, it's my first day." I explained sound very much like a damsel in distress. He watched me for a moment looking at my face perhaps studying me but not really looking me in the eye.
"Would you like me to show you?" he asked suddenly and I couldn't have been happier to hear the offer.
"YES, I mean yes please. I should be in English with Mr. Bitts?"
He laughed as he stooped down to retrieve my belongings and it made me laugh although I didn't know why I was laughing. The sound of his voice just sounded so genuinely amused it made me want to join in too. "I don't get why that's funny."
He stud up and I realized just how tall this guy was. He had to be at least six, six. "We like to call him Mr. Pitts and you'll find out why, my names Silven by the way."
We started to walk down the hall he handed me my bag and carried my books for me I didn't protest
"My name is Tija." I blushed and looked down at my high tops. I decided to wear a cute black dress and that came just above my knee a jean jacket and my favorite kicks; a pair of old black all star high tops, I hoped that I looked the part of the cute new girl. Silven didn't say much while he walked me to class but it could tell he was looking at me. He was really attractive and his boyish nerdy glasses mad him all the more cute. He looked too big to be a geek but he didn't dress like a jock. He had on slim fitted jeans that showed off the muscles in his legs and the black button down shirt that wasn't tucked in and a red tie. He was wearing black motorcycle boots and to me clashed with his outfit but with a chiseled face like his it grow on me. "What grade are you in?" I asked trying to strike up a conversation before we reached my class.
"This is my last year." He said his voice seemed deeper somehow. I looked up at him again I just couldn't get enough of looking at how handsome he was. I thought that there were a lot of white actors and male singers I found attractive but he was out right gorgeous. My first and last boyfriend was black so I really didn't know much about white boys except that all black female comedians said that they were crazy and if you left them they just might find you at the bottom of a river or buried in the desert.
This one probably already had a girlfriend though; a girl would be crazy to not be with him.
"Is there something on my face?" he asks and I feel my face going numb with embarrassment. "I'm sorry I just feel like I've seen you before."
"You never know maybe it was at a school thing, what was the last school you went to?"
"I just moved to LA from up north." I told him, he looked intrigued and wanted to know more so the rest of the walk to class I told him about Eureka. When we reached my class (which felt like hours time had gone by) we said our goodbyes and I entered into the room and I handed the teacher Mr. Bitts my class schedule; He was a tall and vary skinny male teacher with thinning red hair and thick bottle cap glasses, he gave it a good looks over then got the class's attention razing one arm in the air and yelling at the class to quiet down for a moment. That's when I realized why they liked to call him Mr. Pitts. The air was running and the class like most I've been in, twenty degrees colder then outside and it wasn't a hot day out and even so you could see that he was hotter than the core of the sun by the heavy sweat stains under his underarms.
"Class this is Tija Hamden new to this school and LA, right?" he asked from over the frames of his glasses. I nodded and gave a small wave to the class in front of me. I walked to the back of the room to the only empty desk and took a seat next to a girl a warring a school cheerleading uniform. Her hair was dyed blond I knew because you could clearly see her roots showing. She looked over at me and gave me a fake smile then went about texting on her iphone. No one talked to me the whole time in class and it made me feel awkward but I did my work and just tried to fit in with the class curriculum. After class I walked out the door and into the hall. "Wait!" A soft voice called to me, I turned to meet a short girl with curly blond hair. She smiled up at me w a small had in my face. "I'm Anna Bella Smith!" I toke her hand and shook it politely, "Tija Hamden." I introduced myself with a smile.
"Would you like to walk to your next class with me?"
I nodded and we started to walk down the hall.
"I have History next." I told her, she smiled widely.
"YAY! So do I!" we both smiled and laughed in an awkward way and continued out journey to our class.
While walking Anna Belle took to letting me in on the clicks that hung about the hallways. It was the usual; gothic kids, rocker, science nerds, comic nerds, beauties and jocks that occupied every school in America. But there was a group that by the usual serotype, just didn't fit in. They hung around in a huddled group of five. And among them was Silven.
"What can you tell me about the guy with the black hair in the glasses and red tie?" I asked trying to sound nonchalant about him.
"Oh you fancying a piece of Silven Stormwater huh? Good luck he's so tightlipped. I swear the guy doesn't talk at all."
"Really, I spoke to him this morning. He walked me to class too. Seem really nice." I told Anna Belle she looked at me as if I was telling a lie.
"You're kidding right? He's in my homeroom, dude never talks. And his sister is always up his ass, I swear she's blowing him."
I looked over and found him watching me walk past but he didn't make a jester to me. Our eyes met and that was all the conversation he had. I looked away and Anna and I walked into our next class.
The rest of the day seamed to go by in a blur. Before I knew it the day was over and I was walking home. The streets were full of students walking to the buses and to nearby neighborhoods. I had agreed with dad that I would wait for him after school to pick me up so I wondered to the end of the parking lot when I got a text on my phone from daddy telling me he couldn't come get me but that my aunt should be here shortly to get me. I sighed in frustration at the inconvenience and sat down on a nearby bench. I stared out at the busy parking lot listening to my iPod making up short stories of where and what the other teens were doing after school when I spotted a familiar face across the lot. His wild raven hair blowing in the worm LA breeze; he turned and looked my way and our eyes met from the far distance. He stud next to a black beat up 95 Honda with his hand resting on the top while his large frame held the door back for three other teens to get in. It was a strange moment that felt like time had shifted into slow motion and I felt like I it was only him and me in the large school parking lot. He smiles with just a slight lift of his left cheek and when he raises his hand to wave to me he suddenly stops by the interruption of a short thin red head that turns to stare in my direction. Her eyes were cold on me; a deep set of forest green stabbing angry daggers into my face like I was a red target board for a knife thrower. I couldn't hear the conversation the two were having but it must have been a bad one from the look on Silven's handsome face being cast down and turned away from her like her voice was the last thing he needed to hear. The red head turned to look at me again with a look of disgusted, "well same to you!" I mouthed out to her and she quickly looked away and got into the car. I looked back to Silven, he was watching me and then just as I was about to wave him bye, Aunt Casey pulled up before me with the window rolled down calling my name for me to get in. I opened the door and paused to see Silven had already gotten in the car and they had driven out of the parking lot. I got in to my Aunt's car and shut the door and we left the school for home.
The night I did my first sets of homework but found myself very distracted by the tall handsome silver eyed boy from school. Even during dinner I really couldn't think about anything else. It was as if my mind was bewitched by the handsome Silven. I needed to know about him, there was something I could not get my mind around about the guy and I needed to know, I was hungry to know; dying of starvation of lack of knowledge.
That night I feel asleep and dreamed of silver eyes and black hair.

"I'm sorry I was in a hurry." His voice was like a whisper but deep and masculine, I could hear that voice singing and not at all sounding like a girl like most male singers now a days. I looked up and found myself looking into eyes the color of star dust.
