Chapter 51

I pull on the ropes around my wrists ever so slightly, but any movement just makes the rope wind tighter around my skin so I give up fighting. It wasn’t the most comfortable position having my wrists tied above me, but at least the bed was comfy.

As time goes by, I get more and more nervous about what Darrius has in mind.

He was having a long bloody shower.

I nearly jump out of my skin as Darrius’ door suddenly opens and I lift my head to see Jaime poke her head in the door, her eyes scan the room and fall on me lying in bed, tied down, with only a towel covering my body.

A blush starts to creep up my neck, could this get any more embarrassing?

Jaime’s eyes widen and she grins.

“I need to talk to you,” she whispers loudly from the door, but she doesn’t enter the room, “But, ah, I’ll come back later.”

“Wait –” I hiss, but it’s too late. She closes the door.

I hear her laugh loudly from outside as she leaves, clearly highly amused by my predicament.

I hear other footsteps outside the door.

I beg it’s just a passing vampire or slave –

…the door knob turns.

Oh, great! Someone else, really? I list off all the people I don’t want to see me in this situation, and the number person I can think of –

…the door opens, I see a flash of that red-gold hair I knew all too well.

I flop my head back on the pillow and squish my eyes shut.

Great, just great.

“Oh, poor darling,” Maximus’ voice fills the room.

“Go, away,” I say through clenched teeth.

I feel a shift in the air around me and I snap open my eyes to see Maximus has run up beside the bed, a huge smirk on his gorgeously irritating face. I meet his eyes, that blush that was creeping up my neck, now reaches my cheeks, and I feel my whole face go red.

“Get lost!” I hiss at him, “What the hell are you doing here? Where is Isobel?”

Maximus shrugs, “I’m getting her – uh, food, and I just came by to drop in to see how Darrius was. What did you do, darling,” he says, eyeing the ropes on my wrists, “To piss him off this much?” He wiggles his eyebrows and I roll my eyes.

“Oh please!” I reply, “Don’t just stand there and gloat, help me untie the rope before Darrius finishes his shower. Please,” I beg Maximus with my eyes, but he just shakes his head, and puts one knee on the bed.

What the heck was he doing?

He puts his other knee on the other side of my thighs and leans down, hands either side of my arms.

He looks me over, and finally his eyes come to rest on my own eyes.

“You are far too cute tied up like this Jennifer,” Maximus growls playfully.

In the bathroom next door, the shower abruptly comes to a halt.

Maximus raises an eyebrow at me and my eyes widen. I beg him with my eyes to get off me. He leans down and kisses my forehead, then leans down to whisper in my ear.

“Good luck, darling,” he says before jumping off me and running for the door at vampire speed. He slams the door shut just as Darrius opens the door from the bathroom.

My face is still alarmingly red, I can feel it.

“Who in god’s name was that?” Darrius growls, angrily, a towel around his waist. He stalks his way to the door and locks it properly this time. He turns to face me, “Well?”

“Don’t ask,” I reply, gulping, “Can you please untie me now?”

“You don’t get to ask, I’ll decide when I untie you, sweetheart,” Darrius says from the door. I see his hair is glistening wet from the shower, and he is now clean from werewolf blood.

“I’m sorry,” I say, “I didn’t mean for all this to happen. For Claudia –”

“ –But it did happen, Jennifer,” Darrius growls – it’s bordering on a snarl, “Now tell me, I expect an answer, who just came in here?”

I sigh.

“Maximus,” I answer, “He thought me being tired up was cute. Thanks a lot, Darrius.”

“I thought he was busy with Isobel,” Darrius doesn’t seem too concerned that Maximus had come in to pay us a visit, “Out of all the years I have lived on this earth,” he says, walking over slowly to the bed, “I have never met a more frustrating girl. You have no idea how to obey, do you?”

“That’s. Because. I’m. Not. Your. Slave.” I say slowly, clearly.

A cruel smile plays at the corner of his mouth as he reaches the bed and puts a finger under my chin, tilting my head up slightly.

I was completely helpless.

“Who’s tied to the bed, sweetheart?” Darrius asks dangerously.

“What are you going to do?” I ask, my breath suddenly shaky. I was scared… but I was also starting to feel warm fuzzy feelings in my stomach.

“Sweetheart,” Darrius says quietly, “I’m going to do whatever I like.”
