#21 She is angry with me

Michael.

“Are you going with Senior Ruhi?”

My insides twisted at her question.

Then her Mama’s face appeared in front of me.

“Does it matter with whom I am going, Cinderella?” I gave her a stern look, making it clear that I don’t like her intrusion.

“It’s Ella!” She exclaimed. “I have been telling you from the first day you talked to me, it’s Ella, Call me Ella! Even the staff call me that name, for a genius like you, do I have to repeat the same thing over and over again?” She got up, collected her books and walked out.

There was complete silence for a moment.

I realised that she is really angry with me.

“What... what was that?” Shreya turned to others.

“This is nothing,” Angela shrugged. “You don’t know her, she throws tantrums and she loves causing scenes,” she said.

I disagree with Angela. The Cinderella I know is a positive and cheerful person. She looked so hurt and gloomy now.

I walked out of the classroom while someone put their hand around my shoulder.

“Are you going to the party with the beauty queen of CSE?” Sam asked me. “It’s kind of hot news today,”

“Not again,” I groaned. “I just wanted to return the favour I owe her, that’s all.” I said before he starts interrogating.

...and I wanted to prove to everyone that I am not together with Cinderella as well.

“You look troubled.”

“I had never been talked to disrespectfully by anyone,” I said, “but today, she did it in front of the whole class.”

“They don’t talk disrespectfully, but they do call you ‘Head-weight’ behind your back,” Sam chuckled.

“I don’t care,” I said. “No one has ever dared to talk back to me directly till now,” I said. “Cinderella just threw a tantrum and got angry because I called her full name, can you believe that!?”

“As a matter of fact, I can,” Sam said seriously. “She was named Cinderella by her parents who were so much in love. They are divorced and do not have any contact anymore. It’s understandable that she hates that name.”

There was something like that?

I looked at him sideways. “How do you know so much about her? Right, you like her best friend.”

“Yeah, I like Nisha.” He said, and then turned to me. “So you better treat Ella nicely,”

“First Ruhi, now it’s you. Why are people dragging me to get involved in their love life-” I stopped.

In front of us was a group of students hanging around a car and taking photos.

“Whoa! Man, it’s a Maserati Quattroporte!” Sam said. “What is it doing here!?” He said.

“ELLA...”

The guy inside the car opened the door and stepped out. He was well dressed like a model and the clothes and style seemed literally taken out of a fashion magazine. He removed his shades and waved to a side.

“Ella,”

“Julian!” Ella looked shocked to see him, and then she noticed the student body around and hurried to his side.

Ella.

“What are you doing here!?” I asked him as soon as I reached near.

“You said its okay to hang out,” he smiled and took my hand. “Come on, I talked to your mama-”

“Julian!” I let go of his hand, “This is my college, and you can’t just-”

“Why not?” He looked genuinely curious. “I just wanted to pick you up,”

I stared at him.

I just want to keep a low profile here, but there’s no way he would understand that.

The students were still gathering around his car and I knew it is best not to stall longer.

“Let’s go then,” I said and he nodded. He opened the door for me and I got inside.

I looked down as students were still clicking photos of the car.

“Why do you look so taken aback?” Julian asked me.

“I don’t like attention,” I told him.

“Did I put you in a difficult spot by appearing like that? I should’ve called you earlier,”

I looked at him.

He was my childhood best friend after all.

“Um...Julian,” I said hesitantly. “I like someone in my college,” I told him and he looked at me in surprise. “So I just don’t want to look bad in front of him,” I said. “I dunno how he would take it if suddenly some guy comes to the college to pick me up.”

“Whoa! Who is this guy? How long have you been together?”

“Um...He doesn’t know that I love him,” I said slowly. “It’s only one-sided,”

“You are in unrequited love?” Julian laughed out aloud. “Wow, you are full of surprises; I thought you are the kind of person who talks your mind bluntly?” He said and looked at me when the signal turned red.

“I am trying very hard to get closer to him, I will tell him soon,” I said. “But it’s kind of hard as he is somewhat reserved...he’s a genius but he is a little dense in things like this.” I admitted.

“Mm...” Julian said thoughtfully. “But just trying hard will not work for people like him,” he said. “They can never figure it out.”

“Then what should I do?”

“You should give him a shock treatment,” Julian said. “So that they can finally see it,”

“Shock treatment? What kind of shock treatment?” I looked at him curiously.

“Um...let me think,” he said playfully. “Like a kiss on the lips?” He looked at me and winked, my eyes widened.

“Are you crazy, Julian? This is not London or the States!”

“But that’s true,” he said. “Or he would never understand your feelings,”

That’s absurd!

I cannot kiss him! I haven’t even kissed anyone!

“From the looks of it, he is the type to not initiate anything with a girl,” Julian explained. “This kind of guys need a push in the right direction,”

“You sure are a love guru, Julian,” I said. “But then the guy I am talking about is different from others,”

He laughed.

“Then let me know about the progress of your love story, I can’t believe that you are having trouble in your love life,” he said. “Who would be so dense as to not realise that you, the heiress of the Adam industries is in love with him?”

“This has nothing to do with my family,” I said grumpily. “And I will deal with my love life, thank you,” I added dryly.

“Okay, then I will take you to a place where you can forget all about your worries.” Julian smirked evilly and I looked at him suspiciously.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked him, but he just accelerated the car.

10 minutes later, we came to a stop in front of a luxury pub.

“Are you crazy, Julian?” I exclaimed. “Let’s go back now!”

“Time to pay up, I arranged the best tutor for you.” He said as he opened the door and got down.

“But-” I stopped as he opened my side of the door.

“Ella, you need to unwind sometimes, I have already told your Mama that you are with me, so don’t worry about anything and just relax.” He dragged me outside the car.

“I can’t hold my drink,”

“Don’t worry; I got your back, trust me.”

And 10 minutes later, I took a sip of my third drink and looked at Julian who was sitting opposite to me.

“And...He was there...he looked worried, like really really worried, and did you know what happened next?”

“Yeah, he barged inside the ladies room and hugged you tightly.” Julian nodded like an obedient student. “And his heart was beating so much, you already told me this thrice.”

I nodded.

“Then he said he is going to the party with senior Ruhi.” I said while trying to take my drink.

Julian stopped me and I looked at him.

“Why do you like him so much?”

“He...he is just the guy for me, I knew it the first time I met him,” I told him. “Ah...Do you know how I met him? I was forced to go to this college by Mama. I was granted admission through the back-door along with a few other students. I was sitting there angrily when the double doors of the seminar hall opened.” I said dreamily.

“The first person to enter the room was Senior Michael, followed by the other protesting students. He looked...he looked so stern and powerful. He turned to the principal and said that the students wouldn’t allow illegal-admission in the college. He said the seats belong to other deserving students.” I stopped. “Everyone in the room looked panicked, but I was mesmerised, I knew that he was the guy for me!”

“Ha! He practically wanted to kick you out of the college and you fell for him?” Julian took a sip of his drink. “Then how did you end up getting the seat?”

I shook my head.

“No idea. The principal was dismissed and I heard that all other students were blocked. Only I got admission and I was surprised.”

“Obviously, your Mama wouldn’t let her plan get ruined by anyone,” Julian said.

“But just imagine studying with the genius students, I was always placed the last.” I said. “It never bothered me as I could see Michael and I had my freedom...” I dragged off.

My eyes started to sting.

“Now he said that he doesn’t want me to ruin his project, he said that he...he regrets taking me back...” I sniffed. “I know that I am not...very smart like him, but I cannot give up on him...” I wiped my eyes again.

“Ella...” Julian looked sympathetic as he watched me. “Do you really need this guy? he is hurting you.”

“I love him; I cannot give up on him.”

“Here, stop crying, I will think of a way to help you.” Julian said thoughtfully. “But I have to make sure that he is not a jerk first.”

“He is not! He is a wonderful guy-”

“Yeah...sure, sure!” He said sarcastically. “Come on, I think you should sober up before going home.”

.......

It took me another one and a half hours to reach back home. Julian and I drove and we visited a bridge.

I had to admit it. He helped me to unwind and I am feeling less stuffed up now. I am also feeling embarrassed that I got drunk and blurted out so many things.

I climbed into the bed and took out my diary.

Michael is going to the party with Senior Ruhi. When is he going to realise that I am waiting for him here? Maybe I should just follow Julian’s advice to give him a kiss so that I can make him realise it. Or maybe I should just tell him that I love him directly... but I am scared that he will kick me out of the project group. It was not easy for me to get inside and stay near him. It took me nearly two years for this...

I stopped writing.

Julian’s voice echoed again.

“From the looks of it, he is the type not to initiate anything with a girl,” Julian explained. “This kind of guys needs a push in the right direction,”

What Julian said is partly true. If Senior Ruhi hadn’t asked him out, he wouldn’t have decided to go with her.

Senior Ruhi was brave enough to ask him out.

Maybe I should kiss him?

I bit my lip anxiously. Michael’s irritated words echoed in my mind.

“Does it matter with whom I am going, Cinderella?”

Argh... I should be the one who is irritated!

Argh... I should sleep now...

......................

Michael.

“So, is everything clear?” I looked around the class and everyone nodded.

Everyone was active except for one person.

I looked at Cinderella who was still looking at her desk.

She hasn’t talked a word since the start and for someone like Cinderella, it’s a record.

“Then good luck everyone, let’s win this tech-fest once again,” I said and the class cheered. “The classes are officially over. I will let you know if there is anything else.”

Ella.

I got up as soon as the class was dismissed.

“Ella, Make sure that you are there for the party today,” Alex said.

“Yeah! Let’s have a good time today, we have to prepare well for the rest of the days for this project,” Shreya clapped her hands.

That’s right. My project mates have arranged a party in the evening as it was our last project day.

I would have jumped at the opportunity before, but not now.

“I have a previous arrangement today, what time is it?” I asked him.

“Is it an important arrangement?” Alex asked me and I hesitated.

“It is,” Angela piped up. “She is busy dating that guy with the Supercar,” she said.

“I am not!” I snapped at her.

Just because I am not in a good mood doesn’t mean that she can badmouth me!

“Then what other engagement do you have, princess?” Angela asked me challengingly. “Otherwise your mummy will be sending someone to pick you up already,”

“Mind your own business, Angela,” I got angry and started to walk away, then stopped when I came face to face with Michael who was on his way outside the class.

Both of us moved to one side, then to the other.

“You can go first,” Michael nodded at me.

“I am not dating that guy,” I told him firmly, against all the warning signs.

Michael looked genuinely taken aback at that.

“He is my friend,” I said again.

“I am not interested in other’s private life,” Michael said. “You can do whatever you want as long as you prepare well for this project,” he added and walked out of there.

I was too stunned to notice that the whole class has gone silent.

As soon as Michael was out of the class, Angela snickered and looked at me, “I believe you have just been rejected, Cinderella,” she said. “In front of the whole class,” she added.

Laughter erupted all around me at her statement.

I fisted my hand and looked around.

“Yes, I love him,” I said. “And I will not give up,” I said in a clear voice.

“He just rejected you, princess,”

“I don’t think so,” said a voice and I turned around to see Nisha walking inside.

I had never been this glad to see her.

“Michael practically said he doesn’t care about her dating as long as his project is okay, if it’s not a rejection, what is it then?” Angela didn’t back down. “It means he doesn’t care a damn about Princess Cinderella,”

“From what I see, Michael is someone who thinks differently,” She said. “He just failed to realise that Ella is interested in him,” she said. “He is always dense when it comes to things like this,” Nisha said.

“That’s right, senior Michael didn’t seem to be aware of her feelings,” Alex said.

“Right, he was just worried about the project.” Vipin added.

“Oh please! Senior Michael doesn’t have the time or patience to deal with people who are infatuated with him,” Meera supported Angela.

“I don’t know what made you confident enough to chase Senior Michael! He is way out of your league.” Angela added.

“That’s so rude!” Shreya looked at her. “I am really sick of this attitude Angela; you need to stop blaming her for every single thing!”

“Wow! Looks like she has influenced you already, it’s exactly like the time in high school.” Angela said darkly. “Everyone thinks she’s this sweet and delicate person, nobody knows her true character.”

I stared at Angela. I don’t know why she hates me this much. I have never done anything to her to be treated like this!

“Angela,” Nisha looked at her. “Ella was not the only one who was there in the high school with you,” she said rather threateningly. “Next time you hurt her, be ready to face me,” she added.

Whoa!

I am grateful that Nisha stands up for me.

“We all know why you are staying with her, Nisha,” Angela said evilly. “But not everyone cares about the social status of their friends,”

I lost my cool at that.

“You bloody bitch!” I was instantly angry at that. I shouted and went towards her while Nisha held me back.

“Let me go!” I told her. I want to tear Angela’s face away. She has just insulted our friendship saying that Nisha is staying with me because of my social status!

“She’s not worth it, Ella,” Nisha said evilly. “Someone who had betrayed her friends and stabbed them behind their back cannot understand the value of true friendship,” she said.

“What the hell did you say!?” Angela got up angrily. The words Nisha said seemed to have its desired effect as Angela looked mad.

Nisha turned to her. “I said you betrayed your friends and stabbed them in the back,” she said firmly. “You don’t want me to tell everyone here what happened during our high school, right?”

“Nisha!” I held her hand now. I too don’t want to go there and deal with the rotten past.

“Everything happened because of her,” Angela pointed at me and shouted.

“No, everything happened because of your jealousy,” Nisha retorted. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have pretended to help her and then betrayed her.”

“Guys stop!” Gokul got up. “This is supposed to be our last project class,” he said. “Let’s not fight like this!”

Angela glared at us for a moment and stormed out of there.

Nisha took a deep breath and turned to me.

“Come on, I have been searching for you everywhere,” Nisha dragged me out of there as the conversation breaks out in the classroom.

“Why did you call him dense in front of all others?” I looked at her.

“You are welcome,” she rolled her eyes. “And it’s quite impressive that you only heard what I said about Michael,”

“Uh...Thank you for helping me,” I said sheepishly. “But Nisha, I don’t want to go back to the past,”

“Nobody wants to go back there, but she knows that you will not expose it, that’s why she’s so confident about torturing you,”

“I don’t care about her,” I shrugged.

“She’s making people think badly about you with her nasty talk,”

“I am used to it and I don’t care,” I said. “It’s good enough that you believe me and stay with me, its fine as long as Michael doesn’t mind it,” I said. “Luckily he is someone who doesn’t care a damn about the rumours,”

Nisha sighed.

“Let’s not talk about Angela; I don’t want to spoil my mood anymore,”

“Okay,” I nodded. “But what brought you all the way to my class?”

“I heard about Senior Ruhi and Michael, I reckon you would be upset,” she said.

“You really are my best friend, Nisha,” I said. “What am I supposed to do now?” I pouted.

“Confess your feelings,” she said and I stopped.

“What!?” I asked her.

“I thought about it, Ella, Michael is an outstanding person and girls will keep on chasing him, the only way for you to be his girlfriend is to confess first and try your luck,”

“You think he is outstanding!?” I asked her.

“I admit that he is extraordinary, but let me tell you, girl, he is not my type, he is like a robot without human emotion,”

“My Michael is not like that!”

“And stop with this useless chase,” she looked at me seriously. “This is the only solution we have, Just confess your feelings directly, otherwise he will never know it”

“But what if he rejected me outright?”

“Then you will stop this unrequited love and mind your own business,” she told me.

“I cannot give up,” I said. “I love him.”

Nisha sighed.

“Look, Ella-”

“But you are right,” I said slowly. “The only way for Michael to know about my feelings is by confessing my love,” I said thoughtfully. “Even if he rejects me, I will chase him anyway,” I said. “I have good perseverance,”

“And a very thick skin too,” Nisha added.

“But I cannot even see him alone,” I said. “How am I going to confess? When?”

“As soon as possible,” Nisha said firmly.

“The tech-fest!” I exclaimed. “That’s the best day we have, I cannot confess before that as he will scold me for not concentrating on the project,” I said. “At the same time, he will be free after our project presentation,”

Nisha chews her lower lip thoughtfully.

“I guess we can give it a try,”

“But...I am really scared, Nisha, what if he...rejects me?” I said slowly. “He won’t ever be friendly to me again,”

It’s ironic that I am still scared of losing him even if we are not together.

Nisha nodded her head understandingly.

“I know what we should do,” she said and I looked at her hopefully. “We need to find out his true feelings for you,” she said. “He already hugged you, so-”

“I dunno if we should count it, Nisha, he is going to the year-end party with Senior Ruhi,” I reminded her.

She frowned slightly, and then her eyes lit up. “I have an idea!” She exclaimed and I could literally see the excitement in her eyes. “We need a spy!”

“A spy?” I turned to her. “What nonsense...” I too stopped.

“Senior Sam!” Both of us exclaimed together and laughed.

Nisha took out her phone without further delay.

Five minutes later, Sam walked to the Cafeteria. To our surprise, he was using the hoodie of his jacket to cover his face.

“So ladies, to what do I owe this pleasure? It’s rare for you to call me, Nisha.” He said while sitting with his back facing the door.

“What are you doing, Sam?” Nisha looked at him in confusion, “why are you covering your face?”

“Ah...you seem not to know about it yet!” He exclaimed dramatically and looked at us. “I cannot be seen hanging out with you, you see, associating with you now is as good as social suicide,” he said and turned his phone around.

And to my horror, we watched as the incident at the classroom played on his phone.

“I am not dating that guy,” I told Michael while blocking his way.

Michael just stared at me as I looked at him in the eyes.

“He is my friend,”

“I am not interested in other’s private life,” Michael said. “You can do whatever you want as long as you prepare well for this project,” he added and walked out of there.

“And I will not give up,”

“He just rejected you, princess,”

The Video stopped.

“What the!”

Nisha slammed her fist on the bench causing both Sam and I to jump in our seats.

“I am going to kill that bitch!” Nisha announced and got up. “I am going to deal with Angela for once and for all!”

“Wait,” Sam said and she looked at him.

“Don’t stop me!”

“You don’t want to get expelled, right?” He said. “Since Angela is a model student in her batch, you cannot touch her easily,” he stated the obvious. “The one getting hurt will be you,”

“What the heck does that mean? I am as competent as her! I joined this college with my own hard work!”

“But she is the best student in her batch,”

“I don’t care,” she retorted.

“She has a lot of achievements, you cannot touch her, let’s acknowledge that, Nisha,” Sam said and pulled her hand back to make her sit back. “Besides, we don’t have any evidence to accuse her,” Sam said. “The video was not taken by her as she is also caught in there,” he said. “And we don’t have any evidence to prove that she did it,”

“It’s time that bloody bitch knows her place!” Nisha started to curse her in every word known to her while Sam’s eyes widened.

“I didn’t know that you have a great vocabulary,” he said.

“This is not funny,” she said. “Ella, you tell me,” she turned to me. “What do you...” she dragged off. “Ella?”

“Um...you alright, Ella?” Sam too noticed me. “You are...um...looking shocked,” he stopped.

I turned to both of them mechanically.

“Do you think Michael heard my confession?” I asked slowly.
